Example 1: kill two birds with one stone
Meaning: produce two useful result by just
doing one action
Example 2: to break the ice
Meaning: to get through the first difficulties
in starting a conversation or discussion
2. prepositional phrase
Example 1: in the blink of an eye
Meaning: in an extremely short time
Example 2: from rags to riches
Meaning: to go from being very poor to being
very wealthy3. noun phrases
Example 1: a bone of contention
Meaning: something which people argue
and disagree overExample 2: apple of one’s eye
Meaning: something or someone very
precious or dear
His new baby girl was the apple of his eye. 4. simile (as + adj. + as, or like + n.)
Example: as dry as a bone
Meaning: very dry indeed
Example 2: as high as a kite
Meaning: anything that is high up in the sky

Example 3: drink like a fish
Meaning: to drink very heavily5. whole clause or sentence
Example 1: to cut a long story short
Meaning: to tell the main points, but not all
the fine details
Example 2: House divided against itself
