Passage 3
It’s early in the morning and the alarm clock has already rung several times. You have to drag yourself out of bed and rush to school, afraid of missing the first school bell.
As a school student, this is probably a common experience for you.
But thanks to new rules, many students in Zhejiang and Heilongjiang provinces can now stay in bed longer than before.
On Feb 23, the Zhejiang Department of Education published a new guideline (指导方针) that asks primary schools to start school later, reported Xinhua News Agency.
According to the guideline, start times could vary among different grades and seasons, with students in Grade 1 and 2 starting no earlier than 8:30 am. Some schools in Zhejiang province have been chosen to test this new guideline, which is expected to be used in other areas in 2019.
A similar guideline was announced by the education department in Heilongjiang province on Feb 24. Since the new semester began in March, students from all primary and junior high schools in the province have been required to arrive at school no earlier than 8 am. And senior high school students are now required to arrive at school no earlier than 7:30 am.
These changes are aimed at making sure students get adequate (足够的) sleep and enough time for breakfast. Before the guideline was published, many primary school students in Zhejiang were required to arrive at school as early as 7 or 7:30 am, which left many of them arriving feeling tired and hungry.
According to a 2016 study by the Zhejiang Department of Education, only 54.1 percent of students in Grade 4 slept nine hours or more a night, while the required sleep time for primary students is 10 hours.
These changes have received much praise. “I definitely (明确地) welcome the move, since this will ensure (保证) my son has enough time for breakfast, which is vital for his health and growth,” a mother surnamed Xu from Hangzhou, whose son is a first-grade student, told China Daily. Pushing back school times isn’t unique to China. In the United States, schools in at least 21 states began to start school later in 2017, as various studies have shown that later school start times could benefit students, reported The Atlantic.
For example, according to a 2015 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US, later school start times could help improve students’ health and study performance.
Just as Mary Carskadon, a sleep expert from Brown University, US, told The Atlantic, “Everybody learns better when they’re awake.”

Passage 5
Imagine you walk into a store. Strangely enough, you see no staff (店员) inside. You pick up things and prepare to wait in line and pay. But even more oddly, there is no cashier at all. So what has happened to this store?
Well, you may have entered Tao Café, a cashless store created by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. In July, the public got to see the store for the first time at Alibaba’s Taobao Maker Festival in Hangzhou.
The 200-square-meter store sells drinks, fast food and snacks. It can hold up to 50 shoppers at a time. To enter and shop, people only need a smartphone with a Taobao app and an Alipay account (账户).
By scanning their Taobao QR code (二维码), shoppers are followed with cameras for facial recognition. The store has also digitalized (数字化) all goods and their placement on the shelves. So when shoppers pick up goods, the system will be able to “watch” and “remember” their selection.
When shoppers are ready to leave, they don’t wait in line to pay. Instead, they go through two checkout doors. Then the bills will be paid with a Taobao account connected to Alipay.
According to Alibaba, the checkout machines can recognize goods even when shoppers put them in pockets or bags. So it is almost impossible to steal things from the store.
Tao Café is not the only cashless store in China. A 24-hour convenience store with no staff called BingoBox opened in Shanghai in June. To enter the store, shoppers scan a QR code on WeChat or Alipay. But unlike the Tao Café, they have to scan another QR code to leave the BingoBox.
1. The underlined word “oddly” means “__________”.

A. The elders would enjoy shopping in Tao Café.

C. Shopping at BingoBox is the most convenient.
D. It saves people much time to shop at Tao Café.

Passage6
Students at the No. 11 Middle School in Hangzhou, China, may have to think twice before getting distracted(分心)in class as a new facial recognition system will be scanning their faces every 30 seconds to make sure they are paying attention.
Called a “smart classroom behavior management system”, the new monitoring solution has recently been installed at Hangzhou’s No. 11 Middle School. It has an Al-powered software that analyzes the students’ facial expressions and general behavior and assesses whether they are enjoying lessons or if their minds are wandering.
The Al is able to pick up seven different emotions, including neutral, happy, sad, disappointed, angry, scared and surprised, and will send a notice to the teacher to take action if it detects that one or more students are distracted during class. The data gathered by the surveillance system could also be used to evaluate(评价) teachers' performance. So far, it has only been installed at this school in Hangzhou, but if results turn out great, it could be rolled out across China.
“Maybe some kids think that it will be watching them the whole time and make them nervous, but they are maybe making too much out of it, because they will feel pressured, but that's not the point of it,” one teacher at No. 11 Middle School said. "It's about getting the children to learn properly the whole time they are in class.”

Passage7
Many of us may have experienced the pleasant surprise of seeing recommended(推荐的) songs after you listen to certain songs on a music app. When we open shopping websites, we are more likely to see things on the home page that we might want to buy.

Many years ago, people depended on the sun, the moon and stars to find their way around. Later, the compass was introduced. And now, we have satellite navigation (satnav) systems (卫星导航系统)to guide us.
A satnav system uses groups of satellites to show the user’s position. They send information to a receiver(接收器), such as a smartphone, to show us where we are.
The earliest built satnav system is the Global Positioning System (GPS), which belongs to the US. Then there is Russia’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), the European Union’s Galileo and China’s own satellite navigation system—BeiDou.
On October 14,2017,an ARJ21-700 plane with the BeiDou navigation system, successfully completed a test flight. The results showed the performance of the system developed by China matches that of similar systems produced abroad. BeiDou navigation system has started providing global services on December 27, 2018, and the system is scheduled to become complete around 2020.
Since its introduction in 2000,the BeiDou navigation system has seen increasing numbers of applications (应用)in everyday life, from shared bikes to farming. For example, shared bikes, smart locks with the BeiDou chips make it easier to find a bike. Farmers can use BeiDou to help plow (梨耕)the soil and sow seeds. BeiDou’s farming applications have spread most parts of China.
With its many uses, the BeiDou navigation system is even playing a big role in the Belt and Road Initiative “So far, the BeiDou system has covered most parts of the Asia-Pacific area,” said the main designer of the BeiDou system.
Today, there are more than 20 BeiDou satellites above our heads, and China plans to send up even more this year to expand (扩张)the BeiDou network to better serve the Belt and Road Initiative. As BeiDou expands abroad, it will be more popular in the logistics (物流)industry.

Passage 11
A number of companies have used the wind and the sun to produce energy. Now, one company is using the force of flowing rivers and ocean waves.
The company is based in the U.S. state of Maine. It is called the Ocean Renewable Power Company, or ORPC. The company recently presented the new technology at an energy conference near Washington, DC. Christopher Sauer, the CEO of ORPC says the technology was designed for small, lonely villages that do not have easy ways to get power.
The ORPC technology is an energy generator(发电机)which can be put under water in the river, called RivGen. It works in a series of steps. First, the generator is put in the middle of a steel cage. The cage goes on top of a wide boat with a flat bottom called a pontoon(趸船). Wheels – or, turbines(涡轮机) – are connected to each side of the generator. Once the pontoon boat is fixed to one place, it is flooded with water. The pontoon, cage, and generator all sink to the bottom of the river. There, the river waves turn the wheels and creates as much as 50 kilowatts(千瓦)of power.
CEO Christopher Sauer says the generator is not very tall, so it can work in water areas that are not very deep, but other companies are not able to work in shallow water. And, Sauer says, the turbines are safe for the animals that live in the river. “At the peak of salmon(鲑鱼) season, we had almost two million fish pass by this thing but at the end of all of that, we did not have a single fish die that we knew about,” he said. Another feature of the technology he mentioned is “crossflow turbines”. They permit the turbines to move in the same direction, no matter what way the water is flowing. Sauer also says the turbines’ shape permits the generator to harvest power from tidal waves in the ocean. The company’s ocean turbine is called TidGen. It can create up to 600 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power a small settlement(定居点).
Right now, the amount of power TidGen can harvest changes as the strength of the tide goes up and down. But ORPC workers are trying to make the power output steady(稳定的). In time, they want TidGen power to be part of the main energy.
CEO Christopher Sauer estimates ORPC’s current price is about 50 cents per kilowatt-hour. That price does not make the ORPC system competitive with natural gas. However, for small lonely villages, energy from flowing water could be more economical.
1. What can ORPC use to produce energy?
A. The wind. B. The sun.
C. The natural gas. D. The force of flowing river.
2. Where is RivGen when it works?
A. On the river. B. At the bottom of the river.
C. Over the river. D. On the river bank.
3. According to what Sauer said in Para 4, we can know that ___________ .
A. the turbines killed lots of fish
B. salmons can help the RivGen create power
C. the animals that live in the river may destroy the turbines
D. the turbines do not make the animals in the river in danger
4. Which of the following word CANNOT be used to describe the RivGen?
A. Safe. B. Perfect.
C. Useful. D. Harmless.
5. What can we infer from the passage?
A. ORPC’s generator can work in shallow water.
B. The way the water is flowing can make the turbines move in different directions.
C. TidGen power is still not part of the main energy at present because of its unsteady output.
D. All lonely villages in the U.S. will have easy ways to get power with the help of RivGen.

Passage 12
You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyacv doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain-sensing umbrella.
The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy (蓬) built into a street lamp.” he said.
The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors (传感器) then make sure that the umbrella offers passers-by shelter whenever it starts raining.
In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which notices whether anyone’s using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the passers-by. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lighting strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Installed(安装) at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of passers-by.
While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyacv says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
1 For what purpose did Belyacv create the lampbrella?
A. To predict a heavy rain. B. To check the weather forecast.
C. To protect people from the rain. D. To remind people to take an umbrella.
2. Which of the following is similar to the underlined word “appropriate”?
A. possible B. suitable
C. right D. necessary
3. What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the lampbrella? A. Its moving speed. B. Its appearance.
C. Its installation. D. Its safety.
4. What can be inferred from the passage? A. The designer will open a company to promote his product. B. The lampbrella could be put into immediate production. C. The designer is confident that his creation is practical. D. The working order of Lampbrella is: motor→sensors→canopy
be appropriate to意为“适合”,与suitable意思相近。故选B。
3. D 主旨大意题。根据第五段中的关键信息“so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians...to protect from possible lightning strike”和“it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians”可知第五段主要描述了这种伞的安全性,故D项为正确答案。
4. C 推理判断题。文中未提及 “发明者将自己开办公司来推广他的产品”,故A项错误;根据最后一段中的 “While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production...”

Passage 15
Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies Co has said that it expects to win 5G network contracts in Germany, which would mark the latest vote of confidence from foreign telecom(电信) carriers.
Huawei is expected to deliver components(零件)needed for building 5G networks to major telecom carriers operating in Germany, namely Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefonica, said Vincent Pang, president of Huawei Western Europe, in an interview with German newspaper Rheinische Post.
A group of telecom operators at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, either confirmed new orders or expressed a willingness to do business with the world's largest telecom equipment maker.
Commenting on Huawei's growing overseas contracts, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said, "Most countries in the world are still able to independently make choices that are in line with national interests."
At the conference, Etisalat, the largest telecom operator in the United Arab Emirates, announced a partnership with Huawei to launch a 5G network in the country by the end of this year.
Rain, South Africa's mobile data-only network operator, also signed a deal with Huawei to launch the country's first 5G commercial network.
"Mapping(绘制)out 5G requires a company to have a well-rounded ability to build the network, such as end-to-end construction," said Xiang Ligang, chairman of the Information Consumption Alliance.
To put 5G into commercial use, companies should also take efficiency and cost into consideration, and "Huawei is competitive in all of the above capabilities and has gained a lead on a global scale".
Nick Read, CEO of the world's second-largest mobile operator said, "Cutting the number of network suppliers from three to two would damage the industry and economic growth. Barring Huawei will delay 5G in Europe by probably two years-it will structurally disadvantage Europe."
Huawei has been steadily increasing its 5G contracts. It has secured over 30 5G contracts in overseas markets and has signed cooperation deals with more than 50 partners.
