中国大陆
初中属于义务教育的一部分, 通常由小学六年级升入。小学升入初中的政策由区县级教育委员会划定, 主要有考试政策, 有些县市也有电脑派位政策。大部分初中有三年, 即七、八、九年级(原初一至初三), 不分文科及理科。一般情况下前两年学习新知识, 而第三年主要是准备中考, 之后升入高级中学、中等专科或职业高中。
香港
