The UN’s World Food Program (WFP) and Agriculture and Food Organization (FAO) celebrated World Food Day on October 16, 2015. The goal of the organizations is to achieve a world without?hunger.
In the 2015 report on food insecurity, statistics show that the need for food will increase as the world’s population grows and 795 million people suffer from?hunger?today. It is fewer than a decade ago. But U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon said the goal is to win the battle of ridding the world of hunger?by 2030, which is still a long way to go.
According to a study published in the journal?Science, half of the world’s population could face severe food shortages by the end of this century as?rising temperatures?shorten the growing season, increase the risk of drought, and reduce the harvests of dietary staples such as rice and maize(corn) by 20 percent to 40 percent. Besides, with the world population expected to double by the end of the century, the need for food will become increasingly urgent. Another cause for the food shortage is the diversion of food crops, maize in particular, for making first-generation biofuels. An estimated 100 million tons of grain per year are being changed from food to fuel. As farmers devoted larger parts of their crops to fuel production than in previous years, land and resources available for food production were reduced. Therefore, less food is available for human consumption, especially in developing and least developed countries, where a family's daily money for food purchases are extremely limited.? Moreover, due to the expanding of the modern industry, people will have fewer and fewer places to turn to for food when their local supplies begin to run out.
