Ⅰ. Teaching aims:
1. Knowledge aims:
. Students can read, write and use the following words and phrases: unexpected, by the time..., backpack, oversleep, overslept;
. Students can master some important structures:
① By the time I got up, my brother had already gotten in the shower.
② By the time I got outside, the bus had already gone.
③ When I got to school, I realized I had left my backpack at home
④ By the time I walked into class, the teacher had started teaching already.
. Students can know the structure and usage of Past Perfect Tense.
2. Ability aims:
. Students can use the new words, phrases and structures to talk about things that happened to themselves freely;
. Students can improve their listening ability;
. Students can learn how to retell a story by using the given words.
. Students can learn how to narrate an event or a story.
3. Emotional aims:
(1). Students will know that life is full of the unexpected. We should smile to life.
(2). Students will learn to accept what happened to them calmly and optimistically, and know that misfortune may be an actual blessing.
(3). Students will realize the importance of arranging time properly.

Step 1 Warm-up
Enjoy a short video and ask students to think about what life is full of, good time, bad time and something else.
Step 2 Lead-in
Present some pictures and lead in the topic “Life is full of the unexpected”
Step 2 Presentation
Work on 1a. Ask Ss to look at the pictures in 1a and think about what happened to Mary. Teach new words and structures.
1. She overslept.
2. By the time she wanted to use the bathroom, someone had gotten in the shower.

Step 3 Listening
Work on 1b. Listen to the tape of 1b. Complete the sentences.
