One of the hardest parts of planning a trip to Hawaii is deciding which of the major Hawaiian Islands you should visit. Each has its own personality and offers unique adventures and activities.
Oahu
Oahu?has a bit of everything, packed in 597 square miles. You can hike into thick rainforests, and when you need a break, relax on powdery white sand beaches and stay at luxury resorts.
Oahu has become a great destination for families. The urban core (核心) of Honolulu and Waikiki has historic sites, museums and bustling(熙熙攘攘的)and nightlife scenes. The island lives up to its nickname of the Gathering Place.
Maui
Maui is a great island for honeymooners. The Valley Isle has top-class resorts and golf courses, adjacent(毗邻)to some of the state’s best beaches. A large dormant(休眠)volcano in east Maui at sunrise or sunset is a serene experience, as well as driving the Road to Hana, famed for its thundering waterfalls.
Kauai
Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. The island gets a lot of rain, but that’s what makes it so lively. You’ll come across flowers and plants you’ve never seen before. For some of the best views on the island, visit Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and the Na Pali coast, boasting some of the world’s highest sea cliffs.
Big Island
The Big Island is the only Hawaiian island still growing. Witness the power of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, wind, lightning and volcanoes with a visit to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It’s one of the few spots in the world where you can see lava flow. In fact, the Big Island has 10 of the world’s sub-climate zones, from the snow-covered mountain of Mauna Kea, green forests of Waipio Valley to stretches of barren desert.
21. Which is young couples’ favorite?
A. Oahu. B. Maui. C. Kauai. D. Big Island.
22. How is Oahu different from the other places?
A. It belongs to Hawaii. B. It offers the best beaches.
C. It has variety of plants. D. You can experience city life on it.
23. What do Maui and Big Island have in common?
A. They are both covered with snow. B. You can have a look at a volcano.
C. Weather is changeable. D. There is plenty of rain.
B
Weather has always been a central part of my life. It terrified me at age four, amazed me at age 10, and got me into college at age 17. The biggest danger we face today isn’t gun violence, election interference(干扰), North Korea, or Donald Trump. It’s climate change.
There is clear evidence that our climate is changing. The number of years with an average temperature above 50 degrees in Rochester has doubled. In the past 27 years, we’ve had 18 years with more than 100 inches of snowfall. In the 50 years prior, only 13 years exceeded(超出)100 inches of snowfall. Recent events are perhaps the most serious reminder that something is horribly off. Just in the past few months, dozens have died in one of the most expansive wildfire seasons on record. This year alone, six tropical systems have impacted U.S. states and territories. Four were major hurricanes and three of those four made landfall.
So what can we do? At this point, it seems like nothing will be able to prevent this planet from going to ruin. I don’t have all the answers. The true solutions to these problems are years away. But that means that we’re the generation that will be responsible for saving the planet. You can start right now.
If you’re learning a language, you could become the bridge between several countries hoping to cooperate on sustainable solutions. If you’re an engineer, why not start thinking about how you can make sustainable products? If you’re in art, music, or involved in another type of expressive discipline, perhaps climate change will factor into your work. Even giving the issue a few minutes of thought every day can make a big difference in the future.
Most importantly, we have to work together on this. This is an issue that requires us to act now, because tomorrow could be too late to act.
Everybody can stop the storm. The world is in your hands.
24. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. The author experienced extreme weather at age 17.
B. The author has a serious gun fright as a child.
C. The author’s ashamed of being born in a poor family.
D. The author is in favor of Donald Trump.
25. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?
A. Lead in a topic. B. Provide some suggestions.
C. Add some supporting details. D. Give an introduction.
26. What is the author’s opinion?
A. The government is to blame. B. Everybody should be aware.
C. Education is the most important. D. Man Can Conquer Nature.
27. What title can we give the passage?
A. There’s a Storm Coming B. Great Minds Think Alike
C. Mind Your Own Business D. Two Heads Are Better Than One
C
Natalie Hampton, Sanah Jivani, Peyton Klein, and Tori Taylor share one thing in common: They all experienced or witnessed bullying as teens.?
As they tried to make sense of what they’d personally endured (忍受) or watched others live through, the four young women, who didn’t know each other, decided to dedicate their teen years to bullying prevention.?
After taking time to recover from the severe bullying she experienced, Hampton built an app called?Sit With Us?that helps students find new friends with whom they can share lunch. Jivani, now 21, had been bullied for having a hair loss condition known as alopecia and founded?International Natural Day?while in high school. Klein noticed how students who spoke English as a second language were excluded(排斥) and discriminated against, so she launched an after-school program to promote tolerance and friendship called?Global Minds Initiative. Taylor, who’d experienced bullying, fought to bring a peer counseling(咨询) program to her high school.?
Bullying often makes victims and bystanders feel helpless, but young people also have the power to help change the culture at their school — just like Hampton, Jivani, Klein and Taylor did. When you are faced with bullying, what will you do? Here are the four’s opinions.
Build self-confidence. Bullies tend to pick on kids without confidence. If you can build self-confidence, you can help prevent being bullied in the future.
Never stop telling your story. Reliving the painful experience of bullying can be difficult, but realize it takes courage to tell your story and your story truly does have the capacity to change the world. Talk to a teacher, a coach, or a parent. It’s their job to step up and help you deal with a bully, so tell them what you know.
Make friends. Making friends can be difficult if you’re not very outgoing. Having friends, though, can make you less vulnerable(易受攻击的)to bullying, and it gives you someone to pal around with between classes.
Ask about transferring schools. If your situation is particularly bad, ask about transferring schools. This step may be difficult if you go to a zoned public school, but it can be done.
28. What is the main fun_ction of Sit With Us?
A. It can introduce new friends.
B. Students can get help from teachers.
C. Students can use it to order lunch.
D. It can help to develop friendship.
29. What does the underlined word “alopecia” probably refer to?
A. Illness. B. Habit. C. App. D. Food.
30. What did Klein do for bullying prevention?
A. She took an active part in an after-school program.
B. She built an app called?Global Minds Initiative.
C. She helped to fight against discrimination.
D. She appealed to us to tolerate school bullying.
31. What do the four girls advise us to do?
A. Make as many friends as possible. B. Avoid getting into trouble.
C. Don’t keep trouble to yourself. D. Better not choose a private school.
D
Children who use screens for seven hours or more a day are showing signs that their brain cortex(大脑皮层)is thinning prematurely(过早地), according to a new major US study.?
The ongoing $300 million research is funded by the?National Institute of Health?and shows results of the effects of technology on children.??The aim of the study, called Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development, is also to show how screen time affects emotional development and mental health. The researchers also determined that children who spend more than two hours of daily screen time score lower on thinking and language tests.?
Researchers made the early findings by scanning the brains of 4, 500 children.?
The brain cortex is the outermost layer of neural(神经中枢的) tissue that processes information from the physical world.?It is critical for cognitive functions such as perception(直觉), language, memory and consciousness but thins as we mature into old age.
Though the difference was significant from participants who spent less time using smart devices, the study director cautioned against drawing a conclusion.??
Dr Gaya Dowling, an NIH doctor working on the project, cautioned against drawing a conclusion because they aren’t completely sure it’s being caused by the increased use of modern technology. They won’t be able to draw a definitive outcome until they follow them over the course of several years.
Dr Dowling said: “It won’t be until we follow them over time that we will see if there are outcomes that are associated with the differences that we’re seeing in this single snapshot.”
A 2014 study showed that there is a direct correlation between the thickness of the brain cortex and IQ score. The cortex begins to thin after the age of five or six as part of the normal aging process.
The findings showed that?people with a significant increase in IQ did not have the expected cortical thinning and people with a significant decrease in IQ had exaggerated(夸张) cortical(皮质的)thinning.
?A major data release of the initial data is scheduled for early 2019.
32. What belongs to the findings of the new major US study?
A. Screen time can result in a smaller brain.
B. The brain cortex gets thinner as we mature into old age.
C. Too much exposure to screen can lead to a poorer health.
D. Children who are interested in computer are academically poor.
33. Why is Dr Gaya Dowling against drawing a conclusion?
A. There are some doubts about their findings.
B. He thinks that further study is needed.
C. The number of the participants is not large enough.
D. They should ask for the government’s permission.
34. What is the finding of the 2014 study?
A. The brain cortex has much to do with IQ score.
B. The brain cortex’s thickness is determined by IQ.
C. Different people have different cortical thinning.
D. Aging is a natural process for creatures.
35. What will probably happen when a person reaches the age of five or six?
A. His IQ score will get higher and higher.
B. He will be more addicted to modern technology.
C. He will show more interest in modern technology.
D. His brain cortex will become thinner and thinner.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

How to Survive Being Stuck in a Lift
Being stuck in a lift, also known as an elevator, can sometimes be scary, especially if you are a fan of those kinds of movies which have a lot of elevator tragedies. You may think being stuck in an elevator in real life is not like in the movies. 36
Remain calm and do not panic! You may have heard of this a lot of times and it is true that panicking will do you no good. 37
Press each of the floor buttons one by one. Then, try the “doors open” button. If none of the buttons works, the lift is broken, and you need to let someone know about it.
See if your phone has any reception or Internet. 38 If you have WiFi connection, contact a family member or friend. Don’t forget to tell them what the address is of the building and possibly which elevator you are stuck in. If your phone is not available, the following tips can help you.
Look through the gap between the doors of the lift. If you can see light between the doors, the lift has stopped near a floor, and you should be able to shout for help and be released. Do not try to force the doors open yourself. If you can’t see light between the doors, the lift has stopped between floors, and no one will be able to let you out if you scream for help. Look for an emergency telephone. If there is no telephone, press the alarm button repeatedly. 39
40 If you have waited for more than half an hour and nobody has come to get you out, shout and bang the inside walls of the lift. If no one is responding to you, then you’ll have to accept that you will be in the lift overnight. If this happens, make yourself as comfortable as possible to save your energy. By morning, the building should be full again. You can try to get some help then.
A. Check the time.
B. It will cause you not to be able to think clearly.
C. Eventually, someone should hear you and get help.
D. Here are some tips to help you survive.
E. However, it is still a vital thing to know how to survive if it ever happens to you.
F. If you do have reception, call emergency services.
G. Use your watch.

W: It’s mainly about the different attitudes people have towards the foreign language learning. About 27% of the people think a foreign language is a must in their daily life.
M: I can’t agree more. There are more and more people learning foreign languages.
W: That’s true. About 35% of the people are learning or willing to learn a foreign language.
M: As far as I’m concerned, many people, especially students, are forced to do so because of exams.
W: Yes, that accounts for 21%. There are also about 15% of the people who take foreign languages to be useless and they take no interest in them at all.

M: May, you’ll never guess who I met at the cafeteria. Julia Swan.
W: You mean our former monitor in high school?
M: Yes.
W: How is she doing? I still remember how excellent she was as chairman of the Students’ Union.
M: She graduated from Fudan University and then got her master’s degree at Stanford University and found a job in an accounting company in New York after graduation. But she quit her job several months ago and moved back to Shanghai. She said she wanted to make a contribution to our country.
W: So what is she doing now?
M: She gives art lessons at Fudan University, her old school. And she asked us to visit her if we are free.
W: Oh, I’d love to.

W: Hi, David. There’s a new gym opening in town today. Would you like to go with me this afternoon?
M: Yes, more than glad to. I need to do some exercise to build up.
W: Then this is a good chance. They sent me an invitation with a note saying I could take a friend for free on the first day. Also, if we both sign up before Friday, we can get a discount on a six-month membership.
M: Great. Count me in. But I’m not sure which of the gym equipment would best help.
W: Well, I’m no expert of that, but I think you can try lifting weights and do at least 200 sit-ups twice a day.
M: I’ve never tried weight lifting before. Is it dangerous?
W: No, not at all, if you know some of the basics. Don’t worry. I’ll be your personal trainer.
M: Thank you. When shall we meet?
W: Well, can we meet up in town at 1: 30 P. m.?
M: Perfect. See you there, coach.

Now could everyone sit down, please? I’ve got an important announcement to make. As you know the national school poetry competitions that we usually enter are starting soon. The competitions are sorted into three levels: the high level, the middle level and the low level. The high level is for 17-to-19-year-olds, and the middle level is for 14-to-16-year-olds. But the one for people of your age, the low level, is the one we’d like you to go for. We hope all of you will try. As some of you may remember, the topic for last year was “Weather”. This time the judges have chosen the topic “Change”, and that could cover a lot of things. A new school, a different house, for example. So if you want to enter the competition but you’re stuck for ideas, have a look at last year’s winning poem called Rain on the competition website. You may know the girl who wrote it—Maria from our school. She also got a little book of her poem called Traveling published as part of her prize. Maria won some money for the school. If anyone in the school wins, we’d like to use the money for the library, as we feel that’s the right way for it to be spent. Maria’s prize money last year was spent on the computers and the lab. OK, that’s all from me. For more information, please visit our school’s website.
