Part-time jobs for 15 and 16 years olds
Waiter / Waitress
A job as a waiter or waitress is a good choice for 16-year-olds. Not only can one earn $9-$12 an hour, but they can also get the tips (小费). Most people that visit a restaurant don’t just have good food. They come here to relax and have a good time. Besides serving food quickly, a young waiter who talks to them politely with a smile on his face will make the diners enjoy their time at the restaurant.
Work in a library
If one is fond of books, working in a library is another suitable choice. Besides the pay is good, it offers a lot of free time when students can actually sit down and finish their homework. So on returning home, they would have time to hang around with friends or just relax. So working in a library is an excellent part-time job for teens, especially for school students.
Internet jobs
There are many ways of making money through online jobs like clicking on advertisements, visiting sites and signing up with them. However, such online jobs don’t pay well. A better Internet job for teens is to complete online surveys. These are quite simple surveys that usually ask one about his/ her opinions and ideas. Many companies use these ideas to make products designed for teenagers.
1.A student who is busy with his research paper will probably choose to work ______.
A. in a restaurant B. in a library
C. on the Internet D. in an IT company
2.The writer wrote this text to ______.
A. tell us the importance of doing part-time jobs
B. advise teenagers how to choose a part-time job

3.Why do some companies ask the teens to do surveys?
A. The teens have more free time.
B. They can pay less to the teens.
C. They need advice to make products for teens.
D. The teens usually express their true opinions.

There are three branches of medicine. One is called “doctor medicine” or “scientific medicine”. Scientific doctors try to observe sickness, look for logical pattern, and then find out how the human body works. From there they figure out what treatments may work. This kind of medicine is believed to date from the 4th century BC.Although nowadays it is successful, in the ancient this approach (方法) probably did not cure many patients.
The second kind of medicine is called “natural cures” or “folk medicine”, in which less educated people try to cure sickness with various herbs. These folk healers also use observation and logic, but they are not so aware of it. They try things until they find something that seems to work, and then they keep doing that. Folk medicine flourished (兴起) long before the development of scientific medicine and was more successful in ancient times.
The third kind is called “health spas” or “faith healing”. Sometimes this may be as simple as touching the holy man and being immediately healed. Other times, a magician may make you a magic charm, or say a spell (咒语), to cure you. Some religious groups organize healing shrines (圣坛) for the sick. In these places people rest, get plenty of sleep, eat healthy food, drink water instead of wine, and exercise in various ways. They also talk to the priests (牧师) and pray to the gods. If you are feeling depressed or you have been working too hard, going to these places may be just the right thing to make you feel better.

7.The author’s primary purpose in this passage is to_______________.
A.show the important role religion plays in medical treatments
B.argue for the importance of medicine in health care
C.describe different types of medicine
D.compare the educational background of three different types of patients

Each new school year brings fresh reminders of what educators call the summer learning gap. Some call it the summer learning setback. Simply speaking, it means the longer kids are out of school, the more they forget. The only thing they might gain is weight.
Most American schools follow a traditional nine-month calendar with winter and spring breaks and about ten weeks of summer vacation. Some schools follow a year-round calendar. They hold classes for about eight weeks at a time, with a few weeks off in between. The National Association for Year-Round Education says there were fewer than 3,000 such schools at last count. They were spread among forty-six of the fifty states.
But many experts point out that the number of class days in a year-round school is generally the same as in a traditional school. Lead researcher Paul von Hippel said, “Year-round schools don’t really solve the problem of the summer learning setback. They simply spread it out across the year.”
Across the country, research shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over the summer than other students. Experts say this can be prevented. They note that many schools and local governments offer programs that can help.
But calling them “summer school” could be a problem. The director of the summer learning center at Johns Hopkins, Ron Fairchild, said research with groups of different parents in Chicago and Baltimore found that almost all strongly disliked the term “summer school”. In American culture, the idea of summer vacation is connected to beliefs about freedom and the joys of childhood. The parents welcomed other terms like “summer camp”, “extra time” and “hands-on learning”.
8. According to the first paragraph, the summer learning gap _____.
A.helps children to gain weight
B.leads children to work harder
C.improves children’s memories
D.affects children’s regular studies
9. Compared to traditional schools, students in the year-round ones _____.
A.perform better and have more learning gains
B.have much less time for relaxation every year
C.have generally the same number of class days
D.hold more classes with more free weeks off
10.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Students from poor families often fall behind after the vocation.
B.Year-round schools can solve the problem of the learning gap.
C.There are schools in each state following a year-round calendar.
D.Nothing can help the students who fall behind after the vocation.
11. Why did almost all parents dislike the term “summer school”?
A.Because they cherish the children’s rights of freedom very much.
B.Because they are worried about the quality of the “summer school”.
C.Because they want their children to be forced to make up the gap.
D.Because they couldn’t afford to the further study during the vacation.

Parts of Africa are covered by a dark cloud. But this is no rain cloud. It is a living cloud made of billions of locusts(蝗虫) that are traveling across the continent eating everything in their path.
And now in the battle to stop this disaster, a radio station in Senegal, West Africa, is offering listeners 50 kilograms of locusts. "We think this idea will get more people to take part in the war on the locusts," said Abdoulaye Ba, from Sud-Fm, a radio station in one of Senegal's worst affected area.
This is West Africa's biggest locust disaster in 15 years, and it is moving east, causing huge damage to crops. As they move they produce young and increase their number and will soon threaten Sudan in the northeast of Africa. Some say it could reach Asia.
Experts say the harmful effect on crops in areas already suffering from food shortage and war could cast many people to go hungry. Governments in the areas are not well equipped to fight the pest.
Although leaders of 12 countries have agreed on a plan, it is not expected to be enough. "We are now treating 6,000 hectares per day with pesticide(杀虫剂), but we need to treat 20,000 hectares per day in order to have any hope of controlling this disaster," said Mohamed Adballahi Ould Babah, director of locust control in Mauritania.
Requests are being made for international aid, which is the only way to limit the disaster, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization warned.
12.By using "dark cloud" to describe locusts in the first paragraph, the author mainly meant to ?.
A.show the size, speed and damage of the mass of locusts
B.suggest the high speed that locusts travel at
C.warn that locusts would sweep the continent severely
D.hint that they look like dark monster
13.The story is mainly about ?.
A.West Africa's united effort in fighting a disaster
B.the difficulty in controlling locusts
C.the great damage locusts caused to West Africa
D.a struggle to fight against a disaster brought by locusts in West Africa
14.According to the text we learn that the locust disaster ?.
A.can be even more serious in Asia
B.is then out of control
C.has affected greatly most areas
D.cannot be stopped unless twice as much pesticide is provided for the affected areas
15.Which of the following is WRONG?

Understanding Disabilities
There are around 650 million people in the world that have disabilities, yet most people are still quite ignorant about it.
(1)What do you think of when you see the word, ‘disability’?
Wheelchairs? White sticks? The Paralympics? 16. The legal definition of disability is that someone has a physical or mental impairment that has a great and long-term bad effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.
This affects about 650 million of us, worldwide. 17. Most become disabled during the course of their life. So maybe the term TAB (Temporarily Able-Bodied) is better for people who are not disabled, because we may not stay that way forever.
(2)18.
Imagine not being able to see,or not being able to walk. Think of all the things that would be different. How can I get my education? What about my future? Would my friends still want to hang out with me? Will strangers laugh at me in the street? Can I get my own place? What job can I do?
Clearly, having a disability can affect many things in a person's life.
(3)Disability and the law
19. It is illegal and extremely unpleasant to discriminate (歧视) against someone who is differently abled. The label ‘disabled’ is not always helpful. Even if someone meets the legal definition, they may not see themselves that way. Instead of thinking about what is wrong with those people,or noticing what they can't do,we should look at how we like to live, and try to make it possible for everyone to join in.
After all—what is normal?20. But better understanding would be a start.
A. How can the disabled find better jobs?
B. How does disability affect people?
C. People with disabilities don't need pity.
D. Most of us have never really thought about it.
E. We should consider more for people with disabilities.
F. Only 17% of people with a disability are born with it.
G.There are laws to prevent people with disabilities being treated unfairly.

I prefer my English classes to be taught in English only. What we all know, a good learning environment is of greatly importance if we want to study English well. Classes teaching in English provide students for a better environment. When English is an only language in class, students will have more opportunity to practise listening and speaking. However, there were problems with this method. Sometimes we may find difficult to follow the teacher and some slow learners may even give up learn English. In spite of these difficulties, but I believe practice makes perfect. With enough practice, we can overcome the difficulties and benefit from English classes in the long run.

Dear Tony,
I am so grateful for the birthday blessing and gift you sent to me.
As you know, it’s a challenge for me to learn English well, so I turned to you for help. You advised that I should read more and enlarge my vocabulary. While reading English stories, I came across some new words, so a dictionary was exactly what I needed. It was then that I received your gift, an English dictionary. What a timely help! Encouragingly, I have made some progress in a recent exam. I”ll go on working hard and do better.
With the summer vacation approaching, I hope you can come to my city for a visit and we can have fun together.
Best wishes
LiHua
