So think about it. We should say no to the people who waste food every day. An old saying goes, “Every grain on the plate comes from hard work.”. It tells us everybody must save food.

Passage 5
MCDONALD’S, one of the world’s largest restaurant chains, recently made a big decision. On March 9, the company announced that its chicken suppliers in the US would stop using human antibiotics (抗生素) within two years.
Antibiotics are medicines that attack harmful bacteria to help cure illnesses. Many cattle, pig and chicken producers give their livestock antibiotics to help them stay healthy. Feeding antibiotics to animals is legal in the US. But the producers feed their livestock not only animal antibiotics, but also those used by humans. Experts say it can lead to public health problems. Overuse of these human antibiotics could cause germs to become resistant to drugs. When the drugs are used to treat humans, they may no longer be effective.
Many US fast food restaurants already say they serve chicken which are raised without antibiotics, but the decision by McDonald’s is important because of its size. The company has over 30,000 stores around the world, including 14,000 in the US.
In recent years, customers have started to care more about food ingredients(食材). If they feel certain foods are made with ingredients that are of low quality or don’t meet certain levels of quality, they’ll choose other higher quality foods.
After seeing customer visits to US stores drop two years in a row, McDonald’s says more changes to their food could be on the way.
However, McDonald’s won’t be applying the new antibiotics policy to its Chinese stores soon.
The company said it’s not a double standard but they have to take Chinese food safety standards into consideration.

You don’t need to like all food, but it is good to have different colors in your diet(饮食), for example, red food such as strawberries and tomatoes, yellow food such as bananas and pears and orange food such as carrots and oranges. But what about blue food?
A few years ago, a food company added the color blue to its bags of sweets. Children like the color blue, so were the blue sweets popular? The food company was surprised to find that they were very unpopular. Children still preferred the sweets that were the usual colors of red, green, brown, yellow and orange.
How many blue meats or vegetables do you know? None? There are few natural blue foods —it isn’t a common natural food color. Some scientists say that as a result, our brain doesn’t recognize blue food as something healthy or safe to eat. This is perhaps why we don’t usually use blue food coloring for drinks, cakes and other food.
Some people say we eat with our eyes. The idea is that we need to like the looks of the food before we try it. I wanted to test this idea and so I asked some friends to have a very unusual lunch. My husband and I made some eggs on toast and put blue coloring in them. The result is nobody ate them. My guests refused to put the blue eggs in their mouths!

Teach your children to pay attention to traffic lights when you cross the road together with them. This helps them understand when it’s safe to cross. Make sure that you walk between your children and traffic, and hold their hands all the time.
When your children are a little older, you can start to tell them the importance of traffic knowledge. Let them start to understand the reasons why they need to be so careful. Talk with them about road signs and traffic rules.
Ask your children to play in a safe place. Never let them ride bikes on the road without an adult present at rush hours.

If we look at someone else’s body, we can often tell how they are feeling by their body signals. So reading body language signals is a great tool for daily communication.
Someone doesn’t think that learning how to read and use body language is important. In fact, 7% of the information we receive is from what people actually say and 38% of the information we receive is from the tone(语气) and the speed of their voice, while 55% of the information we receive is from their body language.
Facial expression is one of the body languages. Scientists say that humans have 80 muscles(肌肉) on their faces. These muscles can make 7000 different facial expressions. They can be divided into six kinds: happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and disgust(厌恶).
For example, when people think a certain food tastes disgusting, they usually make a funny face. When people are surprised ,they often raise their eyebrows and open their eyes wide.

Firstly, to play sports safely in hot weather, you must drink water. Sports drinks are great for athletes, but they have so much sugar that they'll dehydrate(使脱水)you more. However, drinking a few bottles of sports drinks will be good for you.

Fourthly, remember that the earlier in the day you start your exercise, the cooler it will be. If you can start practice before the sun comes up, you have a few good hours to practice in the cool hours of the morning. Also, the earlier you practice, the earlier you can ?nish the exercise. If you
need more practice time, come back to the ?eld later in the evening, when the sun is setting.
Last but not least, you should watch what you eat. Eat food which is high in water, starch (淀粉) and carbonhydrate(糖类), but be sure to get a good balance(平衡)in your diet.

Passage 14
Could getting a good night’s sleep avoid putting on weight for children?
According to a new study, putting preschoolers in bed by 8 P.M.
Could reduce their chances of becoming overweight or obese (肥胖) later in life by half. Preschoolers are children around the age of 4 or 5.
The researchers from Ohio State University wrote their findings in the Journal of Pediatrics. They have found that young children who go to bed after 9 P.M. are twice as likely to be obese later in life. The lead author of the study is Sarah Anderson. She says that it’s very important for parents to create a bedtime routine for their children.
How was the research conducted? Researchers chose 977 children for it. These children are part of a larger project called the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. The project follows healthy babies born in 1991 in ten U.S. cities. In order to have a clearer picture of the results, researchers then divided the children into three groups:
those who went to bed by 8 P.M. or earlier
those who went to bed between 8 P.M. and 9 P.M.
those whose bedtimes were after 9 P.M.
When these children turned 15 years old, the researchers looked at the results of the study. Of those with the earliest bedtimes, only one out of ten was obese. Of those who went to bed between 8 and 9 at night. 16 percent of the children became obese. And out of those with the latest bedtimes, 23 percent of the children became obese.
“Having a usual bedtime routine can lower children’s risk of becoming overweight. Besides, as usual, early bedtime is also likely to have positive effects on behavior and social development,” said Professor Anderson.

Passage 15
Dealing with Sleep-Away Camp
I have never been away from home, at least not for more than three days, much less two whole weeks. When I got the chance to go to Journalism Camp, I was afraid. Of the 19 other students there, I knew no one.
What if I had to go home during camp time because I wouldn't be able to get used to the new
situation? What if my roommate and I don't get along? How do I even use a washing machine?
Well, after the first night, nearly all of my problems were solved. The students were amazing,
and my roommate was perfect. She knew how to do crazy braids(辫子)with my long hair and she
loved to listen to me talk loudly! I couldn't have asked for more.
The two weeks nearly flew by, and I learned to take responsibility for myself: washing clothes, cleaning and other things like that.
However, in the process I didn't realize how tied I had become to the usual order of waking up early, running to get to the newsroom in time, and coming back to a large room full of friends who shared similar feelings as I did.
On the last day, I couldn't get myself to turn in my room keys. It couldn't be over. I become
emotionally tied really easily, so it was hard for me to pull away. I couldn't push away my tears.
Leaving camp just left me empty.
I wasn't having the “blues”, but I felt really sad about leaving. Returning home, I was in the
state of disappointment for a few days. I kept to myself, sleeping through most of the day, so I
wouldn't have time to look back.
I needed to get used to life at home again. This was my challenge. I was lucky to have the
two-week experience, but I had to learn to accept that not all things last forever.
I could still keep in touch with my new friends while continuing on with the rest of my summer. I know I will go through the same experience when I leave high school after senior year.
