Could getting a good night’s sleep avoid putting on weight for children?
According to a new study, putting preschoolers in bed by 8 P.M.
Could reduce their chances of becoming overweight or obese (肥胖) later in life by half. Preschoolers are children around the age of 4 or 5.
The researchers from Ohio State University wrote their findings in the Journal of Pediatrics. They have found that young children who go to bed after 9 P.M. are twice as likely to be obese later in life. The lead author of the study is Sarah Anderson. She says that it’s very important for parents to create a bedtime routine for their children.
How was the research conducted? Researchers chose 977 children for it. These children are part of a larger project called the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. The project follows healthy babies born in 1991 in ten U.S.cities. In order to have a clearer picture of the results, researchers then divided the children into three groups:
those who went to bed by 8 P.M. or earlier
those who went to bed between 8 P.M. and 9 P.M.
those whose bedtimes were after 9 P.M.
When these children turned 15 years old, the researchers looked at the results of the study. Of those with the earliest bedtimes, only one out of ten was obese. Of those who went to bed between 8 and 9 at night. 16 percent of the children became obese. And out of those with the latest bedtimes, 23 percent of the children became obese.
“Having a usual bedtime routine can lower children’s risk of becoming overweight. Besides, as usual, early bedtime is also likely to have positive effects on behavior and social development,” said Professor Anderson.

This is a story from a meeting held by some people and two things in nature. We call it the Four-Sided Talk. Let's “listen to” everyone carefully and find out what they think.
An old tree: I am thousands of years old, but I have fewer and fewer friends. I'm afraid I will be cut someday. People cut down many trees to make paper and chopsticks. Soon there will be no trees to make air and to protect people from floods. Mother nature is making many disasters to teach people a lesson.
The river: What the old tree said is right. I not only make the Earth more beautiful, but provide the clean water for people and animals. Now I'm sad because people put waste into me, which kills many animals and plants that drink my water. Some people drink this kind of water and get sick, too.
People: We have lived on the Earth since ancient times. The Earth is our home. We have done some harm to our home! From now on, we should make full use of the resources on the Earth and protect the Earth. Let's try our best!
The United Nations: We know a little about the environmental problems. Hearing what all of you said, we've decided to protect the Earth and love the Earth. We've also made the June 5th World Environment Day.

So the old lady put down her broom(笤帚) and began her story:“Good afternoon, madam. I’m a cleaner in this hospital. Now let me tell you something about my life experience. Well, my husband died of heart disease and three months later my only son was killed by a car. I had nobody…I had nothing left. I couldn’t sleep; I couldn’t eat; I never smiled at anyone, I even thought of taking my own life because I didn’t want to live alone in the world. Then one evening a little cat followed me home from work. Somehow I felt sorry for it. I decided to let the cat in. I got it some milk, and it licked the plate clean. Then it purred and rubbed(蹭) against my leg, and for the first time in months, I smiled. So the next day I took some rice, vegetables and meat to my neighbor who was sick in bed. Every day I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me feel so happy to see them happy. Today, I don’t know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do. I’ve found happiness, by giving it to others.”

It was Saturday again. Grace and Karen disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell them apart sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Grace had to attend the art lesson and Karen had to attend her ballet lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today,” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. “How would you like to be me for a day?” they asked each other. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Grace put on Karen's ballet dress while Karen put Grace's brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art lesson started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Karen didn't dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Grace was struggling in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, “Karen, you should remember the basic steps. You can't rely on copying what others are doing.”

Do you ever feel no one really understands you? Well, “Pepper”, a robot could change all that. Pepper is the first robot to read human's feelings. Using its emotional recognition functions, Pepper can react to people when it is close to them—making jokes, dancing and even singing in Japanese.
The man-like robot looks like a small girl. It is four-feet tall with a table computer set to its chest. It has human-like hands, a girl-like body and baby-like voice. It was shown to curious people in Tokyo stores on Friday by Softbank, a Japanese robotics company.
Pepper can examine facial expressions(面部表情), human voice and signs, then make an answer. Pepper is designed to be a family robot, but it isn't like Rosie who can do housework on the cartoon. Pepper is used at home or in the store, where we provide fun and entertainment.
Pepper gets power from love inside a family. Not only is he making jokes, making them laugh, also it helps people when they are in trouble. In a natural accident, it can help make those people who are sad or lonely feel relaxed, encourage them or make them laugh.

Listen carefully to what I say.” the time traveler said. “I shall tell you something that you will not agree.”
“Why will we not agree?” I asked.
“Because the science and mathematics you know are not correct,” he said, “You believe there are only three dimensions(三维空间)---length, breadth(宽)and thickness.”
“There is nothing to agree with that,” the youngest member of our little group said.
“Exactly!” the time traveler answered. “But there is also a fourth dimension---time.”
“We all know about time,” another member of the group said,” Time passes.”
“I do not agree,” the time traveler said. “Length, breadth and thickness do not pass. They stay in the same place in space. We move about them. I can prove that time is the same. It does not pass. We move in time the same way that we move in length, breadth and thickness.”
None of us believed the time traveler, and we argued with him for many hours.
“If we could travel back in time,” the scientist said, “we could do things to change the future.”
“If we could travel forward in time,”the doctor(博士)said, “We could do things that change our present.”
The time traveler smiled. “It is clear,” he said, “that there is only one way I can show you that I am right. We must do an experiment. Please wait here.”
He left the room and soon returned, carrying what looked like a clock.
“This is a model of a time machine. It took me two years to make it.” The time traveler said, “I want all of you to understand that when I start the machine, it will immediately (立即) travel in time and disappear from present.”
He turned to the youngest of us. “Give me your hand.” he said.
The young man put out his hand. The time traveler took it and placed it on the machine. Immediately, there was a sudden wind, and the little machine disappeared.
I was certain this was not a trick, but the doctor was not so sure.
“Are you asking us to believe,” he said, “that the machine is now in the different time?”
“Certainly! In my laboratory, a full-size machine is almost complete. As soon as it is complete, I shall send myself on a journey through time. Would you like to see my machine?”
“Are you serious about this?” the doctor asked.
“I have never been more serious about anything,” the time traveler said, “Come.”
We followed him to his laboratory. There, we saw the actual machine, not quite complete, but large enough for a man to sit in.

Every boy wants to find treasure. And Tom was no different. One summer day Tom told Huck about his idea.
“Where can we look for treasure?” asked Huck.
“It’s hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in haunted(闹鬼的) houses.”
So, one Saturday afternoon Tom and his friend went to look for treasure at the haunted house on Cardiff Hill. It was a quiet and lonely place, which made the boys feel very frightened. They entered quietly, and explored downstairs. There were cobwebs everywhere and everything was old and broken. Then they threw their tools in a corner and walked upstairs, but there was nothing there. They were just about to go downstairs and start digging when Tom stopped.
“What is it?” whispered Huck, going white with fright.
“Keep quiet! There’s someone downstairs.”
The boys lay down, looking through the holes in the wooden floor. There were two men downstairs. One was an old Spaniard in a wide sombrero hat and the other was dirty and unpleasant-looking.
Tom and Huck shook with fear when they heard the Spaniard speak because they found it was Indian Joe. He said:
“It’s time for us to move, partner. What will we do with the $650 from the robbery(抢劫)?”
“Let’s keep $30 each and leave the bag here.”
The dirty man went to the fireplace and moved a stone. Then he lifted out a bag full of money and took out some coins. The two boys forgot all their fears when they saw there was real treasure downstairs.
Then Indian Joe started digging a hole with his knife and the knife hit something.
“What is it?” asked the other man.
“It’s a box,” said Indian Joe. And he put in his hand and pulled out a handful of gold coins. The other man found the boys’ tools, and they soon pulled out the box.
“There’s thousands of dollars in there,” said Indian Joe.
“The Murrell Gang used this area one summer,” said his partner.
“They must have hidden their money here.”
“What will we do with this, Joe? Will we bury(埋) it again?”
“No, someone might find it,” said Indian Joe. Let’s bury it in the number two den.”
Tom and Huck got up as soon as the two men left. They decided to watch out for the “man in the sombrero” when he came to town and find out where the number two den was.

Delia was a young pianist. Her husband, Joe, was a young artist.
Each of them was taking lessons: Joe with a famous art teacher, and Delia with a great pianist from Germany. Their teachers were the very best, so lessons were expensive, more than they could really afford, but…when you love your art, nothing is too much.
But soon the money began to run out, and they couldn’t afford the lessons any more.
Then one day Delia came back home and told Joe that she had met a man whose daughter, Sally, wanted to learn the piano, and he was going to pay her $ 50 an hour.
“Delia,” Joe said, “I’ll be much happier if you keep up your lessons,” Delia said it didn’t matter. “When I’ve had some money, I’ll continue.” But Joe also decided to stop his lessons, to draw pictures and sell them.
A few days later, Joe came home and proudly took $ 200 from his pocket. “I met a man from Vermont,” he said, “who bought one of my pictures. And he wants to buy more!”
_________________.They didn’t have to worry any more about money.
Then, one day, Joe came home and saw that Delia’s hand was wrapped in a bandage(绷带). He asked her what had happened. “Oh,” said Delia. “My student, Sally, asked me to make some coffee for her. I dropped the coffee and burned my hand. Sally went straight to the drugstore and got this bandage for me. ”
“Delia, what have you been doing the last two weeks?” Joe asked. She tried not to tell him, but the tears came. “Oh Joe, I couldn’t get any students, so I worked as a waitress in a restaurant. Today, I burned my hand with hot water. So I can’t work any more. But we’ll still have money from the man in Vermont, won’t we?”
Joe looked at her. “There’s no man in Vermont, ” he said. “I’ve been working in a drugstore, and today someone came in to buy bandages for a woman who’s burned her hand. So when I saw you, well, I guessed.”
They both laughed.

I would like to talk to you about space vegetables, and to show you that space vegetables are healthy and good for you.
Space vegetables are grown from seeds that have been taken to and brought back from outer space. The seeds are affected by the radiation(辐射) and low gravity in outer space. When they are brought back to the Earth, these seeds produce vegetables that are bigger, healthier and more nutritious(有营养的) than normal vegetables. However, some people worry about eating space vegetables. They think that space vegetables might not be good for us and could give us cancer as a result of their exposure(暴露) to radiation in space. People should not be scared, as space vegetables are actually perfectly healthy.
Here are some facts that you should know about space vegetables:
Space vegetables are grown from seeds that are carefully selected. When seeds are brought back from space, they are tested to make sure that the vegetables they grow will be safe to eat. There are no traces(痕迹) of radiation after testing.
Space vegetables are better for you than normal vegetables. For example, space tomatoes stay fresh for twenty days, which is one week longer than normal tomatoes. Another popular space vegetable is the peppers. Space peppers contain 20 percent more vitamin C than normal peppers.
After genetically modified(转基因) foods came onto the market, people worried that they were eating unknown things. For example, if nut genes are put inside potatoes, people allergic(过敏的) to nuts might get very sick from eating these potatoes because they do not know they are also eating nuts. Unlike genetically modified foods, space vegetables have not been genetically changed. This means that no new genes are put into the vegetables. Therefore, they won't damage your health.

Starting a book club is easy—all you need is to love reading. Here's how to get yours off to a flying start.
When you set up your book club, the first thing is to get members for your club. They could be friends, family, or those you know through various activities, but they should all love to read. A small group of seven to ten people is usually an ideal size for a book club. Too many make discussions difficult.
Once you have a group, agree on how often you want to meet—usually clubs meet monthly. Pick a date and stick with it. That way, members can easily plan for it. Send out emails a week before the meeting to give people a written reminder. Set meeting time length. An hour is a good start. Two hours usually does the trick.
Then, you need a good place. Libraries, parks and restaurants—all make good meeting places. For many clubs, homes are the best place as you don't have to get dressed up, and noisy public places can make talking hard. If members bring a plate of food or a bottle, it can help start conversation.
Please don't forget the most important thing—the book! Think about the books your club will enjoy. Fiction? Non-fiction? Your club can choose books in different ways. You can take turns to recommend books. Let everyone vote upon what book to read. Anyway, make sure to keep it light and fun.
After all this has been decided, your book club is ready. Now, it's time to hold the first meeting. Enjoy your reading.

For me, living in Canada for 25 years, China is a new world that I have longed to explore. This spring, I chose Yangzhou to be my first stop on a 16-month trip around China. It was like love at first sight. At 15, I bought a book of collection of poems about Tang Dynasty. Through it, I heard of Yangzhou for the first time. I was deeply attracted by a poem written by Li Bai—“Sailing to Yangzhou in March”.
Yangzhou, sitting 2,500 years at the crossing of the Yangtze River and the 2,400-year-old Grand Canal(大运河), is one of the first 24 historic and cultural cities in China. In the old town, there are many ancient streets and houses. It's best to visit the city in spring. Spring paints the city in bright colours.
Yangzhou has always been famous for its gardens. Among them, the Slender West Lake, one of the biggest attractions in the city, was my first stop. The park with its fantastic landscape and lots of history has enough to keep a tourist busy for the whole day. What a shame I simply could afford half a day!
My next stop was He Garden, one of the best protected gardens in Yangzhou. It was once owned by the family of He Zhidao in Qing Dynasty. He Zhidao successfully brought Chinese and Western architectural (建筑的) features together.
Yangzhou is also the starting point of the Grand Canal tour. Taking a boat along the part of the canal in Yangzhou, I was amazed at the liveliness of this ancient waterway and the city's history and culture.
Luckily, my two-day trip to Yangzhou was filled with pleasure and wonder. It made me hungry for more China.
