National Day holiday is coming soon. Maybe you are going to travel with your parents. If so, before you set out, let's talk a little about manners.
In recent years, more Chinese people have been travelling at home and abroad, but some of them don't have good manners.
For example, on Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, there is chewing gum (口香糖) in almost every comer. And newspapers show photos of a child peeing (撒尿) outside a restaurant at Hong Kong Disneyland. In foreign countries, things are sometimes even worse.
Some hotels in Singapore are upset with Chinese tourists. This is because some of them spit in their rooms and smoke in bed.
Zhang Lei is a tour guide from Shanghai. Once Zhang led a group of three Chinese tourists to Europe. On the train, the group talked and laughed very loudly. Some of them even took off their shoes, and one coughed loudly without covering his mouth. Lots of other travellers moved away from them.
"Bad manners hurt China's international image (形象)," explained Zhai Weihua, a Chinese government official.
So, in mid-August, the government started an educational programme.
Travel agencies can teach good manners to tourists at home and abroad.

Manners are very important for our daily life. There are many different customs and habits among different countries. We must fmd out and follow their customs so that they will not think us ill-mannered. Here are examples of the things that a person with good education should do.
If you visit a Chinese family, you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you will not move before the host says "Come in, please." After you enter the room, you would not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is sent to your hand, you should say"Thank you"and receive it with two hands. Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house, a visitor always leaves a little food to show that he has had enough. In England, a visitor always finishes the food to show that he has enjoyed it. The host will be pleased with that.
You have to give your present in public in the Middle East to show it is not a bribe. But it's good manners to give your present in private in Asia. You mustn't give knives in Latin America because it suggests that you want to cut off the relationship. You mustn't give your food to Arabia because it suggests that you think your host isn't offering you enough to eat.
"Come any time" means "I want you to visit me" in India. If you don't suggest a time at once, the India will think you are refusing the in, ration. But if an Englishman says "Come any time", they will think you are impolite if you start fixing a date.

An unselfish love
When I worked for Chicago Sun-times, Victor La Porte, wrote to me from his hospital bed about his kid brother, Tony.
For three years, Victor had been terribly sick. His arms were black and blue. He often passed out. His kidney (肾) had failed, and dialysis (透析) wasn't working. Victor was dying.
Doctor said a transplant (移植) would help, and his brother Tony kept offering his kidney, but Victor refused (拒绝). He didn't want to put his brother through the pain or the risk of living with only one kidney. Tony insisted. "Hey, I love you," he kept saying.
Transplant doctors explained the reason God gave us two kidneys is that we can offer one. It took a long time to persuade (劝说) Victor, but finally he agreed. Several times the brothers went to the hospital, only to have the operation put off because of Victor's infections (感染). But Tony never thought of backing out. After each disappointment, he announced, "We're coming back{" He even got Victor a T-shirt that read I'M NO QUITTER.
Finally the operations were arranged (安排). The one on Tony is harder. Doctors had to remove part of his rib to get the kidney out. His recover took longer than Victor's, and he had more pain.
Victor wrote, "Because of Tony's unselfishness (无私), I have a chance to see my four children grow up. I'll never know my brother's pain, fears and feelings. All I know is the love we share. How can I tell him thanks? Maybe by letting everyone know I have the greatest brother in the world."
