Look around and you’ll see people busy on their smartphones. Smartphones do make our lives easier. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?
According to a study, half of British people own smartphones and they spend an average(平均) of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from shortsightedness(近视) since smartphones were introduced there in 1997.
Staring(盯) at smartphones for long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink(自动眨眼) a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. Another bad habit is using smartphones in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen while your pupils(瞳孔) become larger, too much light enters your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma(青光眼).
While you’re probably not going to stop using to your smartphone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 centimetres away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters from you and then focus on the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times. It should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.

Bai Yansong, a famous TV host, expressed his support for students wearing green scarves (领巾) at a primary school in Xi’an. He wore a green tie on a TV program on October 19, 2011.
“I just want the students to know that I’m also wearing a green one. And we are all great people and are as good as those wearing red scarves,” he said.
The First Experimental Primary School in Xi’an made children with poor schoolwork and behaviour wear green scarves. Parents were angry. “The punish-ment is too bad. All children need their self-esteem (自尊) even though they are very young, and they know the green scarf means something is not quite right. It does harm to students’ self-esteem,” said one mother.
Educational expert (专家) Li Zhenxi said that school students have strong self-esteem. They hope to be respected (尊重) and understood. Punishment will hurt them. “It’s better to encourage them rather than call them ‘bad’ students,” he said. Now, the school has stopped the practice.
Some schools think more of students’ self-esteem and have done better in protecting students’ privacy (隐私) and encouraging them. In American schools, teachers post test results on the wall. Instead of using students’ names, they use secret numbers. This way, students know their secret numbers and can check their own grades only. Many teachers in China tell students their grades by sending text messages to their students.
Schools and teachers are doing more for students’ self-esteem. But it is a long way. Both teachers and parents should realize that test scores are not the only measure (标准) of a student’s ability. Everyone has his own strengths and everyone can make great progress by working hard. Adults should make students get to know their own value. The most important is to make students believe in themselves.

Many people love eagles because they can fly very high into the blue sky. But did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is coming long before it breaks?
When the storm is coming, the eagle will fly high to the sky and wait for the winds to come.

French doctors and American scientists have reported doing an operation in which the doctor was outside the operating room. This kind of operation is known as robotic operation.
Doctor Marescaux did the operation in an office in New York City last month, while a sixty-eight-year-old woman patient was in a hospital in Strasbourg, France. A doctor in Strasbourg got the patient ready. He placed medical tools and a small video camera in her stomach area. Doctor Marescaux in New York watched the patient on a video screen. Then he used the computer to send messages to the robot machine. The robot moved the tools that cut the woman's gallbladder(胆囊) away. The woman got well soon after the operation and left the hospital two days later.
Experts say the main problem with such a robotic operation is based on high-speed telecommunications between the doctor and the robot. Technology must be able to send a doctor's order to a robot to move the tools quickly. Experts also say a successful robotic operation will improve an operation. For example, the robot can make much smaller movements than a person can. A robot machine can turn tools in ways that a doctor's hand cannot.
Doctors say such a robotic operation will make possible safer and better operations in the future. They say it will improve doctor training. It will also mean that doctors could do an operation on people in dangerous places far away. And it could mean that people could have operations done by top doctors without having to travel to the city where doctors work.
