That warm day was the only day of the week without rain. I opened the door, took a seat and began to enjoy the wonderful sunshine. Suddenly, I noticed that the house near mine had been sold. An elderly lady was in front of the door, with some beautiful flowers beside her. I walked to her. She looked to be in her early eighties and had the prettiest white hair.
“Hi! My name is Karmen,” I said smiling brightly at the old lady. She smiled back and said, “Hello, Karmen. I’m Kitty.” Her voice was very strong for someone at her age. Later, I learned that she was alone and had no family or relatives to help her. From that day on, I often visited her and helped her with her housework and sometimes she gave me some delicious food. A year passed, and I considered her to be one of my best friends.
One day, I walked over for my morning visit and knocked on the door, but there was no answer. I knocked again, and she didn’t still turn up. So I let myself in, using the key she had given me. I checked her living room and then her kitchen. I finally went into her bedroom, and she was lying peacefully on her bed. Beside her there were two notes. One was her will (遗嘱), which said all that she had would be given to me. The other was a thank-you note. I went to her bedside and cried sadly.

七、任务型阅读(共10分,每空1分)
阅读下面的短文,根据文中信息完成文后表格。(每空一词)
What would you like to eat to keep healthy? A group of young people got together to discuss this question. Here’s part of their discussion.
Peter: I’d like to eat food that tastes good. But to be honest, if food tastes good, it’s often bad for us, isn’t it? Cola tastes better than water, for example.
Tony: Well, food that is bad for you can taste good! But I prefer not to eat much food that is fried, like French fries. Do you eat fast food, Laura?
Laura: Do I eat fast food? Never! I love to eat food that is healthy. I want to take care of my health, so I eat mainly fruit and vegetables. Oh! And I stay away from sugar, you do too, don’t you?
Tony: Hm, yes. And I think most people are in agreement that fruit and vegetables are good for health. But, um, I would say that fast food itself isn’t always bad for you, but too much of it is not good.
Laura: Actually, did you know that it’s been found in laboratory testing that some types of oil are really bad for us? So I don’t eat anything that’s been cooked in oil. Also, did you know that some foods might cause cancer? Like burnt barbecue meat. I’ve heard eating burnt food like this can increase the risk of cancer.
Peter: Really! But I love to eat meat that’s well cooked, even if it is a little burnt. It’s delicious, and meat isn’t really dangerous, is it?
Laura: Oh! Yes, it is! I never eat meat. It’s not at all good for our health. If I were you, I’d
eat nuts instead.
Tony: Well, I agree it’s good to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, but I think it’s also fine to eat some meat or fish. People who eat a balanced diet should be healthier than those who only eat biscuits and hamburgers, shouldn’t they? I prefer to eat food I like, but isn’t it important to eat food that’s healthy, even if you don’t like it? The main thing is to have a good balance.

Mr Green had a parrot. It could say only one sentence “There is no doubt about it!” The parrot repeated it all day long and said this answer to every question.
A day came when Mr Green needed money and he took the bird to the market to sell it. “Who will buy my parrot?” he cried. “Twenty pounds for a very clever parrot!”
A man passing by heard this and turned to the parrot. “Are you worth twenty pounds?” he asked.
“There is no doubt about it!” the parrot answered.
The man was so pleased that he bought the bird. But very soon he learned that the parrot would say nothing else. And he was sorry he had bought it. He stood in front of the parrot and said, “What a fool I was to throw so much money for a silly bird!”
“There is no doubt about it!” said the parrot.

Robots are not only children’s toys now. They are also useful in many ways. For example, they can do lots of dangerous work instead of humans. They can work for a long time without getting tired. They are good helpers for humans.
However, robots may bring some troubles. Many people will lose their jobs because of robots and maybe robots will make humans become lazy.
In my opinion, with the help of the robots, humans can do things better than before.
