Many college students, who once worked hard to achieve high gaokao scores, lose interest in studies and fail to acquire outstanding academic abilities. Fortunately, a change in college education is on the way.
I firmly back up the act that universities reasonably increase students’ academic burden. Firstly, to ensure the high quality of education, universities should keep students under competitive pressure by assigning the challenging tasks. Secondly, university life is widely acknowledged to be an important time in shaping young people’s personalities and values, so they should take advantage of it. Lastly, to gain an edge in future careers, students are expected to study harder to equip themselves with more knowledge and skills.
When I enter university, I will cherish my university life by making it busy but valuable. I will pursue learning as much as possible, visit libraries constantly and participate in various activities, in which way I devote myself to enriching my university life.

Research shows that under some conditions, music actually improves our performance, while in other situations music makes it worse — sometimes dangerously so.
Absorbing and remembering new information is best done with music off. According to a study, adults aged 18 to 30 were asked to recall a series of sounds presented in a particular order. Their performance suffered when music was played while they carried out the task as compared to when they completed the task in a quiet environment. Nick Perham, the British researcher who conducted the study, notes that playing music you like can lift your mood and increase arousal (觉醒) — if you listen to it before starting your work. But it serves as a distraction from cognitively (认知地) demanding tasks.
That finding is the key to understanding another condition under which music can improve performance: when a well-practiced expert needs to achieve the relaxed focus necessary to do a job he’s done many times before. A number of studies have found, for example, that surgeons often listen to music in the operating room and that they work more effectively when they do. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that surgeons carrying out a task in the laboratory worked more accurately when music that they liked was playing. (Music that they didn’t like was second best, and no music was least helpful of all.)
Research also suggests that singing along might even heighten the distraction. A study presented earlier this month at the International Conference on Traffic and Transport Psychology, reported that singing along with music in a car may slow drivers’ responses to potential dangers. Christina Rudin-Brown, a Canadian researcher who studies the role of “human factors” in traffic problems, asked the participants in her experiment to learn the lyrics (歌词) to “I’m a Believer,” as performed by the band Smash Mouth, and “Imagine,” as performed by John Lennon. Their singing these songs while operating a simulated (模仿的) car increased drivers’ mental workload, leading them to scan their visual field less often and to focus instead on the road right in front of them.
Other iPod rules drawn from the research: Classical or instrumental music improves mental performance more than music with lyrics. Music can make tiring routine tasks (think folding laundry or filing papers) less boring and more enjoyable. Runners who listen to music go faster. But when you need to give learning and remembering your full attention, silence is golden.
58. Nick Perham would most probably agree that __________.
A. ideas are born of a relaxing music
B. fantastic music activates creative minds
C. music before work can refresh minds
D. perfect performance of cognitive work results from beautiful music
59. What do we learn about Christina Rudin-Brown?
A. Her status as a researcher made her preferring the popular songs.
B. Her attitude towards drivers was confusing.
C. Her research changed the drivers’ attitude toward driving behavior.
D. Her research focused on the influence of individual behavior.
60. In regard to other iPod rules, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. While reviewing the exam, you can lift your mood with classical music.
B. You will perform better with Mozart’s music.
C. While washing clothes, you can enjoy the great pleasure of music.
D. Listening to music with ear buds, as running in the gym, makes people run faster.

If you had asked me then if I would accept a job as a restaurant critic for The New York Times, or any establishment publication, I would have replied, without a second thought, “Of course not!” And not just because I did not want to think of myself as an ambitious sort, walking on my grandmother’s grave. Working in restaurants was honest labor, anyone could see that. Writing about them for the mainstream press was not; it felt like joining the enemy.
But reviewing was fun, so much fun that when mainstream publishers started paying me for my opinions, I didn’t do the decent thing. Before I knew it, I had stopped cooking professionally. Then I stopped cooking altogether. “She’s joined the leisure class,” my friend said.
I disarmed (消解怒气) my critics by inviting them along; nobody I knew could afford to eat out and nobody refused. We went with equal amounts of guilt and pleasure, with a feeling that we were trespassing (非法侵入) on the playgrounds of the rich.
We didn’t belong in those starchy restaurants. We knew it, and when we climbed out of my rent-a-wreck, splendid in years from the Salvation Army, everybody else knew it, too. We always got the worst table. And then, because I didn’t own a credit card, I had to pay in cash. The year turned into two, and three, and more. I got a credit card. I got good clothes. I was writing for increasingly prestigious (声誉高的) publications. Meanwhile, a voice inside me kept whispering, “How could you?”
The voice is still there, yakking (喋喋不休地说) away. When I receive weekly letters from people who think it is indecent to write about $100 meals while half the world is hungry, the voice yaks right along, “They’re absolutely right, you elitist pig is hisses”. And when it asks, “When are you going to grow up and get a real job?” it sounds a lot like my mother.
And just about then is when I tell the voice to shut up. Because when my mother starts telling me that all I’m doing with my life is telling rich people where to eat, I realize how much the world has changed.
Yes, there are still restaurants where rich people go to remind themselves that they are different from you and me. But there are fewer and fewer of them. As American food has come of age, American restaurants have changed. Going out to eat used to be like going to the opera; today, it is more like going to the movies.
And so everyone has become a critic. I couldn’t be happier. The more people pay attention to what and how they eat, the more attuned (习惯的) they become to their own senses and the world around them.
When I remember that conversation with M. F. K. Fisher, I wish I had not been quite so gentle. When I rerun the loop in my mind, I turn to her and say this: “No, you are wrong. A. J. Liebling had it right. All it really takes to be a restaurant critic is a good appetite.”
61. Why would the author have refused the job as a restaurant critic at the very beginning?
A. Because she thought she was more ambitious.
B. Because she didn’t think highly of the job.
C. Because she liked being a cook.
D. Because she didn’t want to criticize anyone.
62. Why did they go “with equal amounts of guilt and pleasure” (in Para.3)?
A. They felt guilty because they were poor, but when they did eat out, they forgot their
troubles.
B. They felt guilty because they were not rich, yet they were spending money in the same
way as the rich people did, meanwhile they got pleasure from it.
C. They felt guilty because they got pleasure not only from eating out, but also from going
onto privately- owned land without permission.
D. They felt guilty because half the world is hungry, but they were eating out, and got
pleasure from it.
63. What does the underlined sentence “The year turned into two, and three, and more.” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. It means that she was a restaurant cook for many years.
B. It means that she enjoyed a rich life for many years.
C. It means that she was upset by her job of being a restaurant critic for many years.
D. It means that she went on and on writing as a restaurant critic for many years.
64. What changes have taken place to American restaurants?
A. They have places for both the rich and the poor.
B. They have more varieties of entertainment.
C. They have become more expensive.
D. They have become less expensive.
65. The end of the text implies that _______.
A. the author feels guilty of her job as a restaurant critic
B. the author is happy about being a restaurant critic
C. the author starts to approve of the job of being a restaurant critic
D. the author thinks that she has no appetite for a restaurant critic

七、任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每空一词。
Herbal medicine is the practice of treating illness using plants. Many herbalists use the entire plants, from flowers, stems, leaves to roots, in the form of everything from teas to tablets. These plants contain natural, chemical things that can treat a variety of diseases. Nowadays an increasing number of people use herbal medicines to treat their diseases.
Herbal medicines have a long history. These natural and alternative medicines were used thousands of years ago. According to the earliest document, herbal medicines were first used in China in 2,800 B.C. For almost 5,000 years, herbal medicines were used for treating various diseases. Today, they have been developed as a separate industry as a large number of people favor herbal medicines over chemical medicines.
Compared with chemical medicines, herbal medicines have their own advantages. For example, they are cost-effective and less expensive than the medicines bought from an allopathic (对抗疗法的) pharmacy (药店). They can be bought in any health store without a prescription (处方). Herbal medicines are more effective than chemical medicines for certain diseases. The chemical medicines prescribed by a chemist could have certain negative side effects. However, many of the herbal medicines don’t have negative side effects. If any, they are softer than the cause of chemical medicines. Being overweight is the cause of many of health problems. Herbal medicines can help weight loss as well as improve overall health.
In addition, herbal medicines can be effectively used for the body’s natural detoxification (解毒) process. Herbs such as carrot concentrate and garlic can be used to cleanse the colon (结肠), improve digestion and food absorption, and improve your immune system. Some digestive disorders such as indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome (肠易激综合征) can be cured using the herbs.
However, like all forms of alternative health care, herbal medicines also have a few disadvantages. Using herbal medicines and supplements (补充剂) to cure diseases would take some time. You are supposed to possess immense patience. Herbal medicines contain various ingredients and you should be sure that your body agrees with the ingredients and it is not allergic (过敏的).
A point worth mentioning here is that some herbal medicines for certain illnesses may have negative side effects. These side effects may not be shown at once. In the initial stages, if the herbal medicines don’t agree with you, it is wise to stop using them.

Many students in China regard passing the college entrance examination as the ultimate (终极的) goal of academic life. Almost all students study hard up to senior high school to get higher grades in every subject, and be in a better position to excel(突出) in gaokao and get admitted to a “good” university. Fewer challenges lie between them and a college diploma. Therefore, quite a few students, over-burdened with studies since their primary school days, lose interest in studies, let alone excelling in academics after entering a university.
However, getting a college degree now requires more effort than it did before. In September, the Ministry of Education released an announcement, requiring universities to increase the difficulty of undergraduate courses and work harder to end academic misconduct(不端行为) in bachelor’s theses (毕业论文). Universities will reasonably increase students’ academic burden to encourage them to work harder and improve their knowledge and skill levels.
However, while the Ministry of Education’s plans aim to increase university students’ academic burden, they’re not intended to put extra pressure on them. Instead, the new requirements are meant to fulfill the basic requirements of university education.
