Last year, I did not like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke so quickly that I didn't understand her most of the time. I was afraid to ask questions because I?didn't?know how to pronounce words correctly. I just hid behind my textbook and never said anything. ? ?
Then one day I watched an English movie called Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie! So I began to watch other English movies, too. Although I?could not understand everything the characters said, their body language and the expressions on their faces helped me to get the meaning. I also realized I could get the meaning by listening for just the key words. My pronunciation improved as well by listening to the conversations in English movies. I discovered that listening to something interesting is the secret to language learning. I also learned useful sentences like “It's a piece of cake” or “It serves you right”. I did not understand these sentences at first. But because I wanted to understand the story, I looked them up in a dictionary. ? ?
Now I really enjoy my English class. I want to learn new words and more grammar so that I can have a better understanding of English movies.

More than 4,000 years later, Lu Yu, "the saint of tea", mentioned Shen Nong in his book Cha Jing. The book describes how tea plants were grown and used to make tea. It also discusses where the finest tea leaves were produced and what kinds of water were used.
It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. In England, tea didn't appear until around 1660, but less than 100 years later, it had become the national drink. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. This helped to spread the popularity of tea and the tea plant to more places around the world. Even though many people now know about tea culture, the Chinese are without doubt the ones who best understand the nature of tea.

Stonehenge, a rock circle, is not only one of Britain's most famous historical places, but also one of its greatest mysteries. Every year it receives more than 750,000 visitors. Especially in June, people go to this place as they want to see the sun rising on the longest day of the year.
For many years, historians believed Stonehenge was a temple where ancient leaders tried to communicate with the gods. However, historian Paul Stoker thinks this can't be true because Stonehenge was built so many centuries ago. "The leaders arrived in England much later," he points out.
Another?popular?idea?is?that?Stonehenge?might?be?a?kind?of?calendar.?The?large?stones?were?put?together?in?a?certain?way.?On?midsummer’s?morning,?the?sun?shines?directly?into?the?center?of?the?stones.?Other?people?believe?the?stones?have?a?medical?purpose.?They?think?the?stones?can?prevent?illness?while?keeping?people?healthy.?“As?you?walk?there,?you?can?feel?the?energy?from?your?feet?climb?up?your?body,”?said?one?visitor.?No?one?is?sure?what?Stonehenge?was?used?for,?but?most?agree?that?the?position?of?the?stones?must?be?for?a?special?purpose.?Some?think?it?might?be?a?burial?place,?or?a?place?to?honor?ancestors.?Others?think?it?was?built?to?celebrate?a?victory?over?an?enemy.?
Stonehenge?was?built?slowly?over?a?long?period?of?time.?Most?historians?believe?it?must?be?almost?5,000?years?old.?One?of?the?greatest?mysteries?is?how?it?was?built?because?the?stones?are?so?big?and?heavy.?In?2001,?a?group?of?English?volunteers?tried?to?build?another?Stonehenge,?but?they?couldn’t. “We?don’t?really?know?who?built?Stonehenge,”says?Paul?Stoker.?“And?perhaps?we?might?never?know,?but?we?do?know?they?must?have?been?hardworking?—?and?great?planners!”

When you visit a foreign country, it is important to know how to ask for help politely. For example, “Where are the restrooms?” or “Could you please tell me where the restrooms are?” are similar requests for directions to a place. Both are correct, but the first one sounds less polite. That is because it is a very direct question. It is not enough to just ask a question correctly. We also need to learn how to be polite by being less direct—or more indirect—when we ask for help.
Good speakers of English change the way they talk when they speak with different people in different situations. The expressions they use might depend on whom they are speaking to or how well they know each other. It is all right to ask direct questions in some situations, like with your classmates. However, if you say to your teacher, “When is the school trip?”, this might sound impolite. But if you say, “Excuse me, Mr. West. Do you know when the school trip is?”. This will sound much more polite. Usually polite questions are longer and include expressions such as “Could you please…?” or “Can I ask…?” It sounds more polite to say, “Peter, could you please tell me your e-mail address?” than “Peter, tell me your e-mail address.” Sometimes we even need to spend time leading in to a request. For example, with a stranger on the street, we might first say, “Excuse me, I wonder if you can help me.” or “I’m sorry to trouble you, but…” before asking for help.
It might seem more difficult to speak politely than to be direct. However, it is important to learn how to use proper language. This will also help you become better at English, or any other language you wish to speak.

2. The expressions people use depend on:____________________________________________
3. Polite questions include expressions such as:___________________________________________
