Tips on how to deal with exam stress
1. Be prepared
Make sure you know what you are supposed to have learned and that you have all your notes and homework to hand. Do you know what format(形式) the exam takes and how the marks are allocated(分配)? If not, ask your teacher and/or study the marking scheme(评分方案), which is often on the exam board’s website.
2. Make a plan
Working out how much time you have to revise and planning how you can use it best by making a timetable is a key factor in how to deal with exam stress. Perhaps you need to spend more time on some subjects than others? Vary(变化调整) the timetable so you don’t get bored. You can always update the plan, if necessary, as you go along.
3. Know when and where you work best
Work when you are most alert(思维敏捷的). We all have slightly different body clocks – are you a night owl or a dawn(黎明) lark(百灵鸟)? Everyone has different revision styles – maybe you like to sit at a tidy library desk or on the floor with your laptop. Wherever you feel calm and in control is the best place for dealing with exam stress.
4. Sleep well
Tossing and turning the night(难以入眠) before an exam is understandable, and our bodies are able to cope with lack of sleep for a day or so. Worrying about not being able to nod off only makes matters worse but there are many things you can do to help. A hot bath and having somewhere dedicated just to sleeping (and not to watching TV or going on a computer, phone or tablet) will help you switch off. If you really can’t get to sleep, do something repetitive like a jigsaw.
5. Talk about it with someone
Almost everyone finds exams stressful – so you are not alone. Expressing your worries to a good friend, family member, your teacher will help get them out of your system.
6. Reward yourself
Build in treats(款待) to your timetable – anything you can look forward to as a reward for sticking to it. Plan something exciting to celebrate the end of the exams.
7. Keep it in perspective(正确对待,保持乐观)
If you feel you have really messed up an exam, there’s nothing you can do until you get the results. Worrying about it won’t help – and may reduce your chances of doing well in other exams you are taking. Think about what you could do about a disappointing result – that will help you feel in control.
Yes, it’s great to do well in exams. But remember that exams aren’t the only thing that will help you succeed in life. Employers will be equally interested in other things, like your attitude, work-rate or ability to get on with others.
Ⅳ. What’s the advantages and disadvantages of stress?
Stress can be a motivator. For example, if you’re stressed out because you have a big assignment due, this may motivate you to work on it and complete it. The stress can help you to put in your very best effort. If you're afraid of losing your job, stress may encourage you to raise your own standards and make improvements you most likely would not have made without the threat of unemployment.
Stress is a disadvantage because it can potentially raise your heart rate and weaken your immune system. Also, it can be a factor in poor decision making because under stress we may not think logically or consider the consequences of the choices we make.
While we all experience stress frequently in our daily lives, not everyone handles it in positive ways. The key for us all is to learn what strategies and behaviors help us to cope with stress in a positive manner.
Finding a friend or family member who'll listen as you vent about the stresses in your life is a much better way to handle tension than isolating yourself and worrying.
Going for a walk, listening to music or doing something you enjoy are much better ways to clear your mind than drinking, eating, smoking etc.
To me the key is realizing that some of the ways we choose to deal with stress can make our situation worse than just weathering out the hectic time.
Realizing that we always have choices when dealing with stress is the first key to making stress work for us and not against us.
