People in the United States honor their parents with 2 special days: Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May and Father's Day, on the 3rd Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days make us think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with childcare.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On mother's Day, people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It's also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(墓地). On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecue for Father's Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It's not the value of the gift that is important, but it is "the thought that counts". Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakers, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
28.Which of the following is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents?
A. Parents bring up children.

C. Parents educate children to be good persons.
D. Parents give love and care to children.

C. It only has two kinds of color.
D. People can wear them only on the second Sunday in May.
30.On Mother's Day and Father's Day _____.
A. children always go to parents' home B. everyone goes to visit the cemetery
C. people usually have family parties D. hand-made cards are not valuable.
31.What do you know from the passage?_____
A. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.
B. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both in May.
C. Not all the children respect their parents.
D. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.

Researchers are looking into new ways to make efficient photovoltaic(光电的) energy and for this they have been inspired by the v-shape posture of the Cabbage White butterfly(菜粉蝶).Photovoltaic energy is the science behind solar power, where light is turned into electricity.
To improve the collection of sunlight,a research group have been inspired by the resting posture of the Cabbage White butterfly. The butterfly keeps a"v"shape in order to heat up its flight muscles before taking off.By creating solar panels(板)in this shape, scientists think that the quantity of power that a solar panel can use can be increased by around 50 percent.
The Cabbage White butterfly is different to many other butterflies because it is using the v-formation.On cloudy days common butterflies need to wait to receive enough sunlight in order to fly. However,by owning the v-shape posture, the Cabbage White butterfly is able to receive more energy more quickly than other butterflies. In addition, the butterfly can reflect sunlight from its wings, which allows its flight muscles to be warmed up to the best temperature.
The new research was done at the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI).Dis cussing the findings with Laboratory Manager magazine, lead researcher Professor Tapas Mallick stated:"Biomimicry(仿生学) in engineering is not new. However, this research, which shows ways to develop low-cost solar power, has not been done before."
32.What posture of the Cabbage White butterfly is being adopted by scientists?
A.The flying posture B. The resting posture
C.The take-off posture D.The sleeping posture.
33.Which is the main benefit of the butterfly's v-shape wings?
A.They always keep the butterfly warm.
B.They can help the butterfly fly much higher.
C.They can help the butterfly avoid danger.
D.They can help the butterfly get more sunlight.
34. What is Tapas Mallick’s attitude towards the research?
A. Doubtful B. Casual
C. Positive D. Disapproving
35.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.New types of solar power inspired by Butterflies
B.The future of solar power
C.Cool things about the Cabbage White butterfly.
D.The butterfly effect theory.

Do you want to give your child the best start in life? Helping him to become a good, confident reader is one of the most valuable things you can do. These simple little things below take up your little time. 36
● Let your kid “catch” you reading. Buy a mystery novel or a fashion magazine the next time you’re at the grocery store. Maybe you guess it. 37
● Ask your child about what he’s reading at school and at home. 38 So care about your child and get your child to talk about what his class is reading. If time is short, you can even do this on the drive home from school or while you’re getting dinner ready.
● There are words all around. Point them out! 39 They’re also on menus and the backs of boxes. Point them out to your child. Ask him if he can read a word you’ve both just seen, and if he doesn’t know what it means, make a point of looking it up in a dictionary when you get home.
40 This trick works for kids of almost any age. For the youngest kids, hearing a bedtime story makes them realize that books have words, and those words tell them many things. Older children can sit next to you and read along. Kids who are reading on their own might even want to read a story to you.
A. Turn bedtime into “story time”.
B. Good readers and good writers.
C. Move your child into reading independently.
D. Words are on subway signs and the sides of buses.
E. That just lets your kid see you reading and enjoying it.
F. Most kids love to talk when their parents are paying much attention.
G. However, they can make a big difference if your child is struggling to learn to read.

W: One day, Murphy went to a doctor to talk about his wife. He said to the doctor, “Doctor, I think my wife if deaf because she never hears me the first time and I always have to say things again and again.” “Well,” the doctor answered, “go home and stand about 15 feet from her and say something to her. If she doesn’t answer, move about 5 feet closer and say it again. Keep doing this so that we’ll get an idea about how serious her deafness is.” Sure enough, Murphy went home and did exactly as the doctor told him. He stood about 15 feet from his wife in the kitchen as she was cutting some vegetables and said, “Betty, what’s for dinner?” He heard no answer. He moved about 5 feet closer and asked again. No answer. He moved 5 feet closer and asked again. No answer. He got fed up and moved right behind her, about an inch away, and asked again” Betty, what’s for dinner?” Betty said, “ That’s the fourth time you asked me. They are meatballs.”
