Customers who come into the Waffle House recognize server Evoni Williams, a soft-spoken 18-year-old from Texas City. It all started with a Facebook post. On the morning of March 3, Laura Wolf was eating breakfast at the Waffle House in La Marque when she overheard an older man, who reminded her of her late father, tell Williams he had trouble with his hands. The man, later identified as regular customer Adrien Charpentier, had an oxygen tank nearby and needed help cutting up his food. “Without hesitation,” Wolf wrote, Williams “took his plate and began cutting up his ham.”
Impressed, Wolf posted the moment on her Facebook page to share the warmth and kindness with all. The following day, Williams’s Facebook notification(关注)began to light up. Her friends saw Wolf’s post and tracked her in it.
Williams had no idea that someone took a photo that morning. The diner was so busy that a line extended outside the door. She said helping Charpentier was reflexive. She has been working at Waffle House since last June to save for college, and this, she figured, was just the right thing to do. “I would want someone to help my grandmother or grandfather,” Williams said.
The post began to make its rounds in La Marque and eventually landed in front of the city’s mayor, Bobby Hocking. He decided to declare March 8 as Williams’s day, and also received an email from Texas Southern University President Austin A.Lane, asking if the school could present Williams with a scholarship.
Williams still works at Waffle House five days a week and plans to do so until she starts classes in the fall at Houston-based Texas Southern. Wolf said Williams does not have a car to get to classes, but some people have offered to start a GoFundMe page for her, proving that a moment of a kindness can change a life.
24. Why did Wolf post the photo on Facebook?
A. The photo reminded her of her late father. B. It could satisfy her inner needs.
C. She was touched by the sight. D. The customer had trouble with his hands.
25. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Without a second thought. B. After careful consideration.
C. Winning a reward. D. Better serving customers.
26. What can we infer about Evoni Williams?
A. She seldom saw Charpentier come to the House for breakfast.
B. It was GoFundMe page that led to her good luck.
C. She is no longer working in service business.
D. She has probably received a scholarship for her college education.
27. What is the author’s purpose of writing the article?
A. To help Williams receive higher education. B. To introduce a random act of kindness.
C. To show that young generation can always help. D. To emphasize the influence of the social media.

Companies that have invested (投资)heavily in big data want to know how to make smart investments that will distinguish them from the competition and enable the best possible return before making the decision to go all in. In the past, not all enterprises’big data plans went as planned. These failures are not usually published, but the big data failure rate is unusually high.
According to Gartner, only 15% of businesses make it past the experimental stage of these
projects. Our fear,as leaders of technology companies,is that with so much attention surrounding AI,the pressure is on to apply the technology without first setting clear business goals and understanding the differences between AI and ML (machine learning) and how they should be applied, thus risking falling behind the many decision makers who are adopting the technology.
It’s easy to get caught up in the great expectations of artificial intelligence as it’s promoted, including breakthroughs like deep learning, but those looking to make an outsized influence should instead focus on good old-fashioned machine learning — or “cheap learning”.
The distinction is simple: Cheap learning is about using basic machine learning techniques on straightforward data sets in different parts of a company to produce a large number of small, gradual improvements. Deep learning,on the other hand,is a specific part of machine learning. Deep learning is a collection of advanced machine learning approaches that make business decisions based on highly complex data sets possible.
For tasks of analyzing raw data, such as images and voice recordings, deep learning is best. But when it comes to working on simplified, structured types of data,we’ve found cheap machine learning will do the trick. When you consider that the majority of data flowing through enterprises falls into this second category,it’s clear which tool makes the most sense.
28. What do we know about investment in big data from the first paragraph?
A. Is secret. B. Is safe. C. Is risky. D. Is fruitful.
29. Which of the following adds to the pressure on the leading technology companies?
A. Understanding AI and ML. B. Wasting too much time on AI.
C. Falling behind other companies. D. Acting with unclear business goals.
30. What should companies with ambitions concentrate on?
A. A strong influence. B. Big breakthroughs. C. Cheap learning. D. Deep learning.
31. What does the underlined phrase “do the trick” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Invest. B. Cheat. C. Function. D. Simplify.
D
Solar power technology could help to reduce deaths caused by household pollution. Pollution trapped inside homes and other buildings kills more than 4 million people each year. Most of these deaths are in the developing world, mainly in Africa. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood or coal-powered stoves. One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun.
Crosby Menzies is a solar power expert with SunFire Solutions, a South African company. He described his latest solar cooker, called the “Sol-4.” “It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooker. We are very pleased to have built the first one in South Africa.”
Solar cookers work by reflecting light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy. The solar cooker can boil water in just four minutes. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.
Menzies noted that people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal. Above all, such individuals would be less likely to develop breathing disorders from harmful smoke.
Since the Sol-4 is so large, it is not the kind of model that you want to move around too often. It is best set up in a permanent place where large groups gather, like a school or home for older adults. At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on way to make it work without sunlight.
Each cooker about $ 2,000, which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem, Crosby Menzies has created a non-governmental organization called Solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donation to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.
32. What do you know about the solar cooker from Paragraph 2?
A. Its price. B. Its advantages. C. Its weight. D. Its size.
33. What’s the biggest benefit of the solar cooker?
A. Healthy. B. Cheap. C. Powerful. D. Convenient.
34. How will Crosby promote the solar cooker?
A. By reducing its price. B. By collecting donations.
C. By giving away products for free. D. By asking other organizations to pay.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Household Pollution Causes Many Deaths Yearly. B. Solar Cooker Reduces Smoke Pollution Deaths.
C. People in Africa Like a New Kind of Cooker. D. Solar Cooker Fails to Work Without Sunlight.

Watch a theater or movie version of the play. You can access some versions of the plays on United streaming. com as a teacher. As a student, look on the Internet movie database for a comprehensive list of productions. 40

Dear Mr. Smith.
I am Li Hua and have just finished the college entrance examination. I’m planning to study abroad after high school. Facing the problem which major I should take, I am writing to you to learn about the related information.
Firstly, what puzzles me most is what I should pay attention to when choosing majors, should personal interest be taken into consideration? Secondly, I’m good at mathematics and computer. So would you please recommend me some related majors that will have a beautiful future? Except both of the above, is there any other aspects that I need to consider when choosing majors? I would be much appreciated if you could give me some detailed advice and guidance.
I’m looking forward to a favorable reply at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua.
