Share the screen
Have you ever argued with your parents about putting away the phone or turning off a video game? A new study shows that the Number 1 fear for most parents of teenagers these days is too much screen time.
Screen time is nothing new. When your parents were growing up, they watched television and they probably played video games, too. Different from them, you are growing up in an age of mobile devices. Mobile devices have made our lives easier. They come with us wherever we go: to the dinner table, into the car, into the bedroom. But it also means they are always interrupting us when we’re trying to have family time or fun with friends. Researchers say too much screen time can cause many problems.
More than two hours a day of screen time raises your risk of being overweight and near-sighted. Too much screen time at night stops you from getting healthy sleep. Children who grow up with the most screen time (several hours a day) can have a hard time focusing and doing well in school. Many families fight about screen time.
The solution is to talk about screen time. Make an agreement with your family about where, when, and how you are going to use your devices. No more than an hour a day is recommended for kids during the school week.
When you do use a device, consider enjoying it with your family. You can invite your parents to watch a movie with you and ask for a comment, for example. Researchers say this way parents can be role models for their kids, and kids will grow up healthy in our digital world
