话题1 安全意识与自我保护
Passage 1
Young children don’t have the skills or knowledge to stay safe in heavy traffic. The following tips(忠告) will be helpful for you to keep your children safe in heavy traffic. Children learn about road safety by watching others. As parents, make sure that you always set good examples. Your children will follow you and think it’s OK to do like you. Teach your children to pay attention to traffic lights when you cross the road together with them. This helps them understand when it’s safe to cross. Make sure you walk between your children and traffic, and hold their hands all the time.
When your children are a little older, you can start to tell them the importance of traffic knowledge. Let them start to understand the reasons why they need to be so careful. Talk with them about road signs and traffic rules.
Ask your children to play in a safe place. Never let them ride bikes on the road without an adult present at rush hours.
The most important thing that you can do is to keep your children from getting hurt, so you should encourage them to follow traffic rules. After knowing about traffic rules, they’ll volunteer to obey them. In this way, they’ll be careful enough to keep themselves away from danger.

Passage 2
What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.
Escaping from a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It’s important to know the ways you can use and to show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways(楼梯) and fire escapes, but not elevators.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not high from the ground. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed, or smoke and fire may come into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may get into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto hard ground might end in injury. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall(缓冲、减弱).
What ways can be used when escaping from a fire?

The haze(雾霾) season is back. How much do you know about haze? Haze can also be called “smog”. The word “smog” is from the words “smoke” and “fog”.
Smog will do great harm to your health, especially to your lungs(肺). It can make you cough and cause skin and eye problems. However, there are some easy ways to prevent it hurting you. Here are some of them.
Don’t do exercise in the open. Exercising in the open makes you breathe deeply, and you will take in the particles(颗粒物) deep into your lungs.
Stay indoors and keep the air clean. If you can, just stay in your room and keep the doors and windows closed. Remember to air your room twice a day.
Wear a mask. Paper and cotton masks can’t help you in haze weather. Some special masks, such as N95 masks, can keep you from taking in the particles in the air.
Change your diet. Scientists find that vitamin A, C and E can greatly help protect your eyes, nose and lungs. So eat more green vegetables and fresh fruits every day. What’s more, do not eat food with too much fat and keep a balanced diet.

An earthquake is dangerous, but there are still things you can do to protect yourself. Earthquakes usually come without warning. What should you do if this happens?
Stay calm as the earth begins to shake. Your chances of survival in an earthquake go up if you can keep calm. Staying calm is not easy, but it can save your life.
If you are inside when the earthquake starts, get under a table or a bed. You need to have something strong around you to protect you from falling objects. Do not stand near walls or windows and stay out of the kitchen. The kitchen is dangerous because of many glass objects.
If you are outside, get to an open area as fast as you can. Stay away from buildings and trees. If you are in a car, pull over to a place where there are no trees or tall buildings and stay in the car. If you are close to the sea, try to get as far away from the water as possible. Earthquakes can cause huge waves that can really harm the people nearby.
When the earthquake is over, there are still plenty of dangers. For example, gas fire often comes with an earthquake. If you see a fire, quickly move outdoors to an open area. Remember to always hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Knowing how to stay safe at home is just as important as knowing the family rules. Again, this is something you need to talk with your mom, dad or both of them. Go over safety rules for the kitchen if you’ll be doing any cooking while you’re at home alone. It’s a good idea to practice what you should do in a real emergency(紧急事件), just in case something ever happens.
Kids who are at home alone might worry that someone would break into the house and hurt them. The good news is that this is very impossible. But keeping the doors and windows locked will help you stay safer.
Talk with your mom or dad what to do if the phone rings or if someone knocks at the door. It’s never a good idea to tell someone that you’re at home by yourself. And when you get home and find the door is open or a window is broken, don’t go inside. Instead, go to a neighbor you trust and ask for help.
Other kinds of emergencies could come up, too, like a fire, or you or your brother might get sick or hurt. Just in case, you’ll want to know:
? ◆how to dial(拨打)911?
? ◆your address and phone number?

With the development of society, the level of our life has improved. We have all kinds of food to choose from. However, we all waste food, you and me, every day, millions of tons of it. In China, plenty of food is wasted in restaurants every year to feed 200 million people. And the amount(数量) of food wasted by Chinese customers is increasing fast. So our country is being encouraged to prevent wasting food. Thus, what should Chinese customers do to stop food waste?
Keep a kitchen diary. All of us should keep a kitchen diary, and we can know how much food we waste at home. The first thing for us to do is to stop throwing away food that we can still eat. We should eat everything we buy and if we cannot, we should buy less.
Buy only what we need. We should ask for smaller ones in the supermarket. We should also check how much food we have before buying more. We shouldn’t bring much food we don’t need home even if large posters ask us to do so.
Develop the habit of packing food. Chinese customers are generous(慷慨的)and friendly. In restaurants, often too much food is ordered and served. So when eating out, we are supposed to leave out the food in the menu if we don’t plan to eat it. And order smaller servings in restaurants and take home what we cannot finish.

Everyone wants to be perfect, so finding a good way to achieve self-improvement is more and more popular. For this, the beginning of a new year is the best time to think about ways that you can improve in the coming year. Here are some suggestions for New Year’s resolutions.
Firstly, make sure your goal is realistic(现实的). Winning the lottery(彩票), for example, may not come true. Then, describe your resolutions in details, instead of “I don’t want to be lazy”, “I want to exercise every day” or “I will cut down my television watching time”. At last, break down large goals into small ones. For example, if you want to lose weight, you can start by joining a gym or changing your eating habits.
Your New Year’s resolutions and goals can be about anything, from saving more money so that you can buy a really cool toy to making more friends, or to spending more time with your family. Start by writing down some goals on a piece of paper. After you finish them, keep the paper somewhere you can see, like on your fridge or a wall in your room. Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends. Let them find you. You can help them to find you by staying in one place.
There is another way to help your friends or other people to find you. Give them a signal(信号)by shouting or whistling (吹口哨) three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help.
Keep on shouting or whistling, always three times together. When people hear you, they will give two shouts or two whistles. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help. If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a small room with branches (树枝).
What should you do if you get hungry or need to drink water? You would have to leave your little branch room to look for something to eat or drink. Don’t just walk. Drop small branches as you walk so that you can find your way back.

Reading makes one wise, but many adults seldom read. They say they are too busy to have time to read. Sure. They have work to do. They have families to support. But these are only excuses. The fact is that they haven’t got a reading habit. A reading habit isn’t something natural. It needs to be trained. And it’s never too late to develop a reading habit.
Scientists believe proper books are very important for children to develop a good reading habit. A book in rich colors and with simple patterns(图案) such as lines and circles is a good choice for babies of three months old. When they reach six months, they will become interested in simple story books in rich colors.
When children get old enough to read by themselves, it’s necessary to buy books that are both interesting and right for them to understand. Books which are either too easy or too difficult are not good for kids to keep their habits.
Scientists believe proper books are very important for children to develop a good reading habit. For kids, parents are their first teachers. So parents should read books to set an example. Children will follow them. Scientists say imitating the adults is a born skill. And it is the most valuable way for children to learn. This will certainly help them develop a reading habit in the end.

It’s just natural that two people can’t understand each other because they have different experiences. Then, how can we change the situation? Try to be patient with the people around you. His only friend was a dog named Tiger. He gave his dog enough to eat and drink, but sometimes he was not polite to it. He didn’t know that an unkind word sometimes could cut one’s heart like a knife.
One day as he walked down the street, a young lady was walking in front of him. Suddenly one of her bags dropped from her arms. As she stopped to pick it up, he came to help her. “Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!” she said kindly.
A special feeling came to him. These were the first kind words he had ever heard. He watched her until she went far away, and then he whistled (吹口哨) to his dog and went directly to the river nearby.
“Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!” he repeated the woman’s words. The boy thought and thought. Finally he looked at himself in the river. He saw a clean nice boy. From then on, he had a new life.

“I think it’s windy enough. I can get it to fly.” he answered, as he hurried out the back door. He ran as hard as his ten-year-old legs would carry him, looking back hopefully at the kite. After about ten minutes, he came back.
I asked, “How did it go?” “Fine,” he said, not wanting to admit(承认) failure. “I got it to fly some.” As he walked past me to return the kite to the closet shelf, I heard him say under his breath, “I guess I’ll have to wait for the wind.” At that moment I heard another voice speak to my heart, “Alice, sometimes you are just like that. Ask any student which subject he or she hates most. 9 out of 10 students will answer “Maths”. No matter which country you visit, no matter which grade you are in, you always learn Maths. How come so many students hate Maths, and yet cannot avoid learning it at school?
Jenny Sanders, a high school student in California, asks, “What good do we get from learning Maths? We can use computers to compute numbers and to store information. I think learning Maths at school is a waste of time.”
However, there is much more to Maths than just learning to compute numbers. In fact, Maths can help students learn to think logically(逻辑地) and solve problems, so it is very important to learn Maths. Of course, Jenny was right that we can use computers to do many things, but how would we even know how to use the computer if we can’t think logically? In short, computers are only tools in solving problems.

Do you want to know how to stay focused in class? The following suggestions will help you.
Avoid sitting with friends. No matter how much you want to sit with your friends in class, try your best to avoid it. Talking with friends is not going to help you stay focused in class and will cause trouble, too.
Your teacher is not just standing up there talking—they’re trying to give you an acceptable education. Look at the teacher in the eyes. The teacher should have your full attention in class.
Take notes. By taking notes, you’ll be able to “get into” the lesson. Write down key points as your teacher speaks. Listen to key phrases such as, “This is important.” ,“This is the main idea.” etc. This can help you listen more intently(专心地). You’ll have something to do and focus on.
Getting involved in class discussions is a wonderful way to become a more focused student. When a teacher asks a question, you should offer to answer it. If he or she asks for an opinion, share yours. This shows that you’re listening intently in class.
Ask a question. If you don’t understand something, never be afraid to ask. This really shows that you want to be better, and you can learn the things you’re having difficulty with.
Should you sit with your friends in class?

Whenever I read it, I can get something new from his notes. And I can still remember the happy life we lived together.” Li Lei said, “But I enjoy reading e-books. E-books need no paper. Many forests will be saved.” Grandma advised, “Don’t read for a long time, or your eyes will get sore.”
