A woman came out of her house and saw three old men sitting in her front yard. She said, “I don’t think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat.”
“Is the man of the house home?” they asked. “No,” she replied, “He’s out.” “Then we cannot come in,” they replied.
In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened. “Go tell them I am home and invite them in!” The woman went out and invited the men in. “We do not go into a house together,” they replied. “Why is that?” she asked.
One of the old men explained that their names were Wealth, Success and Love. Then he added, “Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home.”
The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed and he suggested inviting Wealth to fill their home with wealth. And his wife wanted to invite Success; but their daughter-in-law suggested they should invite Love so that their home would be filled with love. At last the husband said to his wife. “Go out and invite Love to be our guest.”
The woman went out and asked the three old men, “Which one of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest.”
Love got up and started walking toward the house.
The other two also got up and followed him. Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success: “I only invited Love. Why are you coming in?”
The old men replied together: “If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would have stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever he goes, we go with him. Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success!”

Is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth,” wise people say. You can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.
If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor.
The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.
Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story.
An old gentleman came to see the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease.
He told his patients to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day.
A month later the gentleman came to the doctor’s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.
“But you know, doctor,” he said, “it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.”
24. The writer thinks that .
A. health is the greatest wealth B. work is as important as studies
C. medicine is more important than pleasure D. nothing is more important than pleasure
25. The doctor usually tells his patient what to do .
A. without examining the patient B. after he has examined the patient
C. if the patient doesn’t take medicine D. unless the patient feels pain
26. The underlined part means “ ”.
A. he was feeling better than ever B. he wasn’t a healthier man
C. he was feeling worse than before D. he will be well again
27. From the last sentence of the passage, we learn the man before the doctor told him not to smoke more than one cigarette a day.
A. was a heavy smoker B. didn’t smoke so much
C. didn’t smoke D. began to learn to smoke
C
Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic(逻辑) behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explaining power”.
Try this experiment. Explain how you’ll increase your brain power, even if you have no idea how right now. Just start with anything, and create an explanation. For example, start with “I'll learn chess.” or “I’ll read an article on the mind every week.” Explain how that will help. You’ll be surprised how often this becomes a workable plan, and if you actually do this, you'll have a better understanding of your brain from now on.
Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember what you have learnt. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal of your ideas the next time you're working on a big project, you'll probably have more success.
Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That's an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem, why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re halfway there.
Writers don't always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help you to understand it. Give it a try.
28. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A Way on How to Write B. Increase Your Brain Power through Writing
C. Brain Power Helps Improve Your Writing D. How to Start Your Writing
29. According to the text, writing can help you a lot in the following ways EXCEPT __________.
A. the increase of your brain power B. the ability to remember
C. the development of your interest in study D. the better understanding of a topic
30. If a writer writes something, it means that he or she ________.
A. has understood it very well B. needs to understand it better
C. wants to remember it in his or her mind D. is exercising his or her “explaining power”
31. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To advise readers to start their writing. B. To explain the importance of writing.
C. To persuade readers to become writers. D. To increase readers’ brain power.
D
Perhaps you want to know how to avoid losing your hearing due to noise. Or maybe you’re already hard of hearing, and want to keep from losing even more hearing.
Every year, the Sight and Hearing Association tests selected noise-making toys to see how loud they are. They publish two lists, one of "noisy" toys and an "ear-friendly" list of safe ones. According to the association’s site, noise levels above 90 decibels (分贝) can produce hearing damage in just a short time.
No noise-level limits are set for toys by the federal (联邦) government, but 90 decibels is generally seen as the highest acceptable level. A similar group in Canada also tests toys and publishes a report, and both the organizations recommend parents that they should listen to toys before buying them. A careful parent will limit a child’s time with a noisy toy.
Teenagers are just as much at risk, since their activities often expose (暴露) them to loud sounds. Listening to loud music has long been known as one of the risks. Sounds in concerts and even cinemas are known to be loud, and teenagers should always bring along emergency hearing protection such as ear plugs. Another possibility is for them to wear ear moulds (模具) made specially for the purpose of protecting hearing.
Adults are mainly exposed to unsafe noise levels while they are at work. The federal government has published several papers on noise control at work, such as Noise Control and Industrial Noise Control Guide.
32. According to the Sight and Hearing Association, when choosing a toy for a child, a parent should _______.
A. test its quality before buying it B. compare the prices of various toys
C. choose a toy from a list of "noisy" toys D. choose a toy with a noise level below 90 decibels
33. What are ear moulds made for?
A. To prevent emergencies. B. To make the ears look beautiful.
C. To reduce hearing damage. D. To cure deafness.
34. The government has published papers connected with _____.
A. the sources of work noise B. the unsafe noise levels
C. protecting the hearing of workers D. preventing noise at work
35. What do we learn from this passage?
A. "Noisy" toys are cheaper than "ear-friendly" ones. B. Toys without sound are best for children.
C. Children should not spend a long time on toys. D. Loud music can damage one’s hearing.
第二节(共5小题 ,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When friends have problems that seem never-ending, you can sense that hopelessness. Most of the time, when someone comes to you, they’re not expecting you to have all the answers or even talk to them. 36 Here’s how you can be helpful to people in their hardest times.
37 When you care about someone and think you know how to improve their situation, you want to give them some advice at once. However, you should ask them, “Do you want some ideas to improve the situation?” This way they have the choice to say no, and they’ll likely give you more attention when they’ve agreed to take your advice.
Be honest. 38 You can’t say, “I know how you feel.” Let them know you haven’t been there before, but you’ll try to put yourself in their shoes to help as much as you can. You can still be an ear, take some time to think about it, and then share your thoughts later.
Never promise. Even if you’ve been there before, you won’t know the final result. Your friend could approach his or her boss exactly like you did for a raise and end up being demoted (降职), at which point he or she might blame(责备) you. 39 Help her weigh the possible results, so that she can decide if it’s worth the possible reward.
Plan a trip. People can often find answers when they go on a trip. 40 Let themselves relax and clear their head for a while.
A. Advise with permission.
B. Offer long-term support.
C. You don’t always have to have the right words.
D. So plan a fun-weekend trip with your friends.
E. If your sister wants to take a risk, make sure she knows it is a risk.
F. If you don’t know how someone feels, you can’t lie to them.
G. They just want someone to help them through hard times.

People cannot get away from advertisements which promise cheap goods and free gifts, nor can I. I had a very bad experience of buying a camera because of falling for advertisements.
Last Wednesday, when I was walking in the street, I saw an advertisement in front of a shop saying that the cameras were on sale for only 20 yuan each. Seeing the attractive prices, I couldn’t help entering the shop to buy one and two rolls of films. I was so excited that I couldn’t wait to invite my friends to take photos in the nearby park, where we had a good time and took lots of pictures. After that, I sent the films to a shop to be developed.
Unfortunately, when I went to collect my photos this morning, I was surprised to be told that none of my photos came out. At that time I regretted getting a bargain for 20 yuan and I thought I should be smart about advertisements in future and not be tricked by them.
Yours truly
