Boxing Day falls on December 26th or sometimes the following Monday if December 26th happens to be a Saturday or Sunday. It is said that Boxing Day began in England in the middle of the nineteenth century. Boxing Day, also known as St. Stephen’s Day, is usually celebrated in Australia, Britain, New Zealand, and Canada.
There seems to be two stories on where Boxing Day comes from and why it is celebrated. The first is that centuries ago, on the day after Christmas, business people would give boxes containing food and fruit, clothing, or money to their employees and servants. The gifts, which were an expression of thanks, gave the holiday its name, “Boxing Day”.
The second story is that Boxing Day comes from the tradition of opening the alms (救济物) boxes placed in churches over the Christmas season. The collections including food and money were sent to the poor the day after Christmas.
Today, Boxing Day is spent with family and friends with lots of food and sharing of friendship and love. Government buildings and small businesses are closed but department stores are open and filled with people exchanging gifts or buying price-reduced Christmas gifts, cards, and other things.
To keep the tradition of Boxing Day alive, many businesses, organizations, and families give away money to Food Banks and provide gifts for the poor. That’s the way the Christmas holiday spirit can be kept.
26.Where was Boxing Day probably born?
A. In Australia. B. In Canada.
C. In New Zealand. D. In England.
27.Boxing Day is also called ______.
A. Fighter’s Day B. St. Stephen’s Day
C. Business Day D. Thanksgiving Day
28.How many stories are mentioned to explain how Boxing Day began?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
29.Centuries ago, business people gave gifts to their employees and servants to ______.
A. help them B. satisfy them C. express thanks D. share friendship
30.According to the text, on Boxing Day people can exchange or buy gifts in ______.
A. department stores B. small businesses

“It’s raining cats and dogs!” Although this phrase is not very common in England any more, it clearly shows how we don’t always say what we mean. One thing that is often frustrating (灰心的) for language learners is that they understand every word in a sentence and yet the meaning remains unclear—like this sentence that actually means “it’s raining very heavily!” However, it’s not just idioms that cause difficulties for people learning English.
The British are often considered to be polite but this can be very confusing for non-native speakers. We often don’t say what we are thinking—in fact we often say the opposite! Here’s an example that will hopefully explain what I mean: “You should come round for tea!”
British people are less open than people from other cultures, so we aren’t as quick to invite people into our homes. This phrase is one of those that we say but often don’t really mean, so when no further details are given, you can probably assume (认为) it was made in the name of politeness! But how does this compare to other countries?
When I lived in India, lots of people would invite me into their homes but I always assumed that they were just being polite. Of course, I was wrong. The invitations were almost always genuine, and people expected me to visit them. I was always surprised by how welcoming people were. In fact, I think I spent more time at other people’s houses than my own!
In England, we often think it’s polite to offer or suggest something even if we don’t actually want to do it, while in other cultures people are more direct. Perhaps if English people just say what they were thinking, things would be a lot easier—especially for non-native speakers!
31.The example “It’s raining cats and dogs!” is mentioned to show that ______.
A. it is time for people protect these pet animals
B. the weather condition in England is rather awful
C. it is difficult for non-native learner to understand idioms
D. what British people say is different from what they think
32.What do people from other cultures think of British people’s politeness?
A. Direct and honest. B. Difficult to understand.
C. Serious and formal. D. Too traditional to accept.
33.The word “genuine” in Paragraph 4 probably means ______.
A. 真正的 B. 善意的 C. 礼节性的 D. 公开的
34.The author thinks the Indian people are ______.
A. cautious B. generous C. friendly D. curious[来源:Z+X+X+K]
35.What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To encourage people to show politeness.
B. To teach people how to avoid misunderstandings.
C. To discuss how to learn English idioms effectively.
D. To advise people to understand politeness culturally.

Medical scientists are already putting computer chips (芯片) directly into the brain to help people who have Parkinson’s disease, but in what other ways might computer technology be able to help us? Ray Kurzweil is the author of the successful book The Age of Intelligent Machines. He is also one of the world’s best computer research scientists. He is researching the possibilities.
Kurzweil gets computers to recognize voices. An example of this is Ramona, the virtual (虚拟的) hostess of Kurzweil’s website, created by the computer, who is able to understand what you say. Visitors to the website can have their own conversations with her. Ramona also dances and sings.
Kurzweil uses this technology to help people with physical problems. One of his ideas is a “seeing machine”. This will be “like a friend that could describe what is going on around,” he explains. Blind people will use a sensor (传感器) which will probably be built into a pair of sunglasses. This machine will describe to the person everything it sees.
Another idea, which is likely to help deaf people, is the “listening machine”. This invention will recognize millions of words and understand any speaker. It will also be able to translate what it hears into other languages, so even people without hearing problems are likely to be interested in using it.
But it is not just about helping people with physical problems. Looking further into future, Kurzweil sees a time when we will be able to store what we hear, see and think in a computer. This technology probably won’t be ready for at least 50 years, but when it arrives, it means our minds will be able to live forever.
36.Ray Kurzweil is ______.
A. a famous medical scientist B. a computer research scientist
C. a patient with Parkinson’s D. an inventor of computer chips
37.What can Ramona do?
A. Talk with her visitors. B. Cure brain diseases.
C. Help deaf people listen. D. Teach people to sing.
38.How can the “seeing machine” help blind people?
A. By helping to treat their eyes. B. By translating into other languages.
C. By helping them see the future. D. By describing to them what it sees.
39.What is mainly discussed in the fourth paragraph?
A. The listening machine. B. The life of deaf people.
C. The common hearing problems. D. The understanding between people.
40.What can be the best title for the text?
A. Future Lifestyles B. Virtual Hostesses
C. Intelligent Machines D. Great Computer Scientists[来源:Z&xx&k.Com]
