Teaching Plan for Module 3(NSE Book 1)
The Second Period, Reading: “My First Ride on a Train”
I. Teaching Objectives
1. Language Objectives
The key words: abandoned, cassette, diamond,distance,expert,fields,scenery,supply
Important phrases and sentences : get on\get off, A be short for B, What a ride!
2. Ability Objectives
(1)Enable students to get a clear understanding of the text, and help them to develop their reading skills.
(2)Enable students to understand past tense time expressions.
(3)Enable students to image and develop their logical thoughts, so that they can express frequently.
3. Moral Objectives
(1) Help students to learn that different countries have their different kinds of culture, we should show our respect to them, and try to know them well.
(2) Also help students to learn that we must love our own country and be proud of it. On the other hand, we should love our country’s beautiful scenery and cherish them.
(3) Always can remember the beautiful and unforgettable experience, and love to share with others.
II. Important Points
1. Let students get the main idea about the text through their own several times readings.
2. Let students to understand the key words, phrases, sentences and past tense time expressions. (Best expectation is that students can use them correctly and freely.)
III. Difficult Points
1. How to make the students to pay their attentions to the coming class.
2. How to analyze the text and grasp the main idea of the text.
3. How to explain past tense time expressions, important phrases, sentence patterns to students, and can use them correctly in real life.
IV. Teaching Methods
1. Task-based Language Teaching, Situational Teaching Method, listening, group work.
2. Teaching Aids: a computer, PowerPoint, pictures, chalk, blackboard …
V. Teaching Procedures
Step I Lead-in (5mins)
1. Greeting.
T: Good morning, everyone.
S: Good morning , Miss Gong.
T: Now, let’s review the content of Module2. In Module2, what have we learned?
S: My new teachers.
T: Yes, very good, and I believe you guys are able to describe one of your new teachers. But do you know how to describe a travel to others? Well then today, let’s see how to do it together, OK?
3. Ask the students a question, and have a simple communication with them.
T: Boys and girls, if you get a chance to go abroad or travel somewhere inside China, which country or place would you like to go? And what kind of vehicle would you like to choose?
S1: I’d like to go…by…
S2: I’d like to go…by…
T: Well done, hope you guys can have a good time there. But if I get such a chance, do you know where I will choose to go? I hope you guys to guess from my prompts.
4. Show the students some pictures by PPT, and let them guess.
T: Look at the pictures, and can you guess which country it is?

T: Yes, well done, they are all about Australia. Like Sydney, kangaroo…and I’ll go to Australia by plane. Now, next, let’s listen to Under Southern Skies sang by Nikki Webster.She sang this song in opening ceremony of The Sydney Olympic Games. Is this song fantastic?

T: Next, let’s learn something more about Australia together.
Step II Fast Reading (15mins)
1. Pre-reading. (11mins)
(1) Before they read the text, the teacher will read a passage which is about Australia to them, and finish exercise1.
T: Well, now guys, I’ll read a passage for you, and according to my reading, you can find all the answers for exercise1, so you must listen to me very carefully! OK?
S: OK!
T: OK, now I believe all of you have gotten the answers, let’s see question1“ Do you know how many people live there?”
S: 22.6millions.

(2) Before reading, ask the students to finish the exercise2, and the teacher will choose some new& key words to explain.
T: OK, children, let’s go to exercise2, and I’d like to give you 2mins to finish, clear? Later, we’ll check the answers together.

T: Very good, now, here in the words box, there are some key and new words that we’ll meet in the new text. First, abandoned, an adjective word, please pay attention to its stress and pronunciation, and it means desert, so guys can you guess its meaning?

T: Good, you’re clever. Then the second word is cassette. (Deal with the rest words in the same way)
2. Skimming (4mins)
Ask the students to skimming the text first in about 3mins, and finish the exercise3.
T: OK, guys, now, I’ll give you about 3mins to read the text, after reading, please choose out “what’s the passage about” in exercise3.

Step III Careful Reading (23mins)
Scanning. (16mins)
(1) Ask the students to read the text again, and try to sum up the main idea of each paragraph.
T: Look at the PPT, I have summed up the main ideas of each paragraph, but the orders of them are not right, so here I’ll give you about 3mins to read the text, after your reading, please tell me your idea about the right order.

T: Now, let’s see who’d like to try?

T: Yes, very good, you’re right, and now look at paragraph1, please underline “what a ride!” in the fourth line.

(2) Deal with the rest of the text in the same way. (Show students the main idea and explain the key words, phrases, sentences patterns at the same time)
(3) Ask students to read the text again in 1min, and pay attention to the verbs’ form, then try to divide the 6paragraphs into several parts.
T: Next, can you try to divide the 6paragraphs into several parts, I’ll give 1min to you to read the text again, and during your reading please pay attention to the verbs’ form, OK?

(4) Ask students to finish exercise4.

Group work (7mins)
Set a scene for the students, and ask them to discuss with partners with three questions.

Please discuss with your partner with these three questions: A “What sort of people do you think travel on the Ghan train?” B “What is the number of each sort of people?” C “Why do you think they’ll be on the train?” Then write down your discussions, later I’ll invite some groups to share their works, OK?
