Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to fight against climate change. Only a year later, Earth Hour had become a global sustainability(全球可持续发展) movement . More than 50 million people across 35 countries took part in it. Global landmarks(全球地标) such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, all were in darkness in 2007.
On the last Saturday of March 27 in 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off the lights for the planet.
Earth Hour in 2011 took place at 8.30PM on Saturday March 26 (local time). People turned off the lights to think about what else they can do to make a difference. They took many activities on that day. Some lighted the candles in the parks or communities. Some had dinner in the candlelight with family. Some chatted with each other without TV, phones or emails, and did other thing.
Besides, there are many other things we can do to protect the earth. It’s all about giving people a voice and working together to create a better future for our planet. Let’s protect our earth as we protect our eyes!
