Born in Poland in 1867, Madame Curie was very
interested in physics but at that time women were
not admitted to universities in Poland, so she was
determined to go to Paris University. Although she
lived a very poor life there, she worked very hard
and succeeded in taking a degree in physics. In
1895, she married Pierre Curie, a very intelligent
and diligent scientist, with whom she worked
together on the scientific research. With much effort, they discovered two kinds of
radioactive matters : Polonium and Radium, which
brought both of them the Nobel Prize for
Physics in 1904 and in 1911 she received a second
Nobel Prize for chemistry, making her become
the first scientist in the world to win two Nobel
Prizes. Today, it is because of her determination,
courage and achievement that she is remembered
as a great scientist.
