P81-Listening 设想: a family sitting at the dinner table, with electric light.(电灯)
A thousand dollar question = a question that everyone wants to answer, because the answer is worth a thousand dollars. A thousand has 3 zeros, the million has 6zeros, and the next one up, a billion, has 9 zeros. (it is a thousand million). The answer to a one hundred billion dollar question is worth one hundred billion!Listening The hundred billion dollar question
Why do people get fat? This isn't the ‘thousand dollar question’. It's the ‘hundred billion dollar question’; and we don't know the answer yet! Do governments care about this? Of course they do! Fat people have poor health. Bad health is expensive. Good health is good business. A hundred years ago, people were thin because they were hungry. In the last hundred years, people have got fatter. Why? The answer seems easy at first: Fat people eat more than thin people. But it's not always ture. Some thin people eat a lot, and some fat people don't eat much. So why are we getting fat? Nobody knows yet, but doctors have a lot of ideas. we sit in warm homes and offices, and we don't move around enough. We eat regular meals, and it's easy to eat the wrong things. But what about day and night? If it's dark, we just put the lights on. Light changes our body chemistry. We didn't have electric light until recently. Perhaps we are just beginning to understand it.
