For instance, North Americans pat someone on the back as a sign of friendliness while Middle East countries think of it as rudeness. Similarly, in some Asian countries, it is polite to cover mouth when you talk or laugh, but to people in North America, they use it when they yawn, cough or sneeze. When it comes to drawing others? attention, in Asian countries, people clab their hands, snap their fingers or wave their hands, yet in the United States and Canada, people just get attention by looking into his or her eyes. Besides, as for being praised, Americans will say “Thank you” with a smile, which will be regarded as an attitude of pride by Chinese.
A smile and handshake both show welcome in China as well as in the USA. Similarly, waving one’s hand is to greet or say “Goodbye” for Chinese and Americans. However, when Chinese feel uncertain or unsure about something, they have the habit of crossing their fingers, which, for Americans, means praying for/wishing for good luck or wishing others good luck. As for making faces, it indicates shyness for Chinese while it conveys disagreement/ disapproval, discontent or an expression of showing pain for Americans. When it comes to touching the belly or stomach, it suggests feeling hungry in China while for Americans, they are suffering from a stomachache.
