While you are at the bookstore, you may be faced with a difficult decision: e-books or paper books? Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Making the best decision depends on a number of factors(因素).
An e-reader can carry a whole library wherever you go, which is great for travelers or those who always want a choice of reading material. Although e-readers are convenient, high levels of screen brightness from an electronic device(电子设备)can cause eye problems. A study in the Information Science Research found that young people preferred e-readers, like smartphones or iPads. That's why most teenagers are short-sighted.
Many book lovers still prefer paper books and value the feeling of them. Paper books are very well designed, they look and smell good, and they carry with them a more human touch. Avid(热衷的)readers prefer reading on paper. Perhaps this is their choice because paper books give them a sense of ownership. Marco Polo was born in Italy in 1254.When he was 17, he travelled across Europe and Asia along the Silk Road with his father, who wanted to do trade with the Chinese. Finally they arrived in Beijing. They were guests at the Emperor's Palace. Although Marco was young, he was very clever and could speak four languages. The Emperor was impressed by him and they became friends. He asked Marco to serve in his court and sent him to do many important tasks across the country.
Marco was amazed by how beautiful and powerful China was. He was impressed by Beijing and the Emperor's Palace, especially the Summer Palace which he described as “The greatest palace that ever was... The walls were covered in gold and silver and the hall was so large that it could easily seat 6,000 people for dinner.”
There were inventions and developments in China which couldn't be found in Europe at that time. Marco was surprised to see Chinese people using paper money in the markets. In Europe, people paid for goods with gold or silver. He could not understand how people pay for food and valuable things with paper! He was also puzzled by the black stones people used to burn to produce heat. The black stones were coal, but Marco had never seen coal before!
In 1291, after 17 years of service to the Emperor, Marco returned to Italy. He was now a very wealthy man. A writer wrote down all the stories that Marco told him in a book called The Description of the World, which became one of the best-selling books in Europe.
Although people enjoyed reading the book, many of them thought that Marco's stories about China were too fantastic to be true. But Marco always stood by his tales. Just before he died, aged 70, Marco was asked the question, “Was it all true?” And this was his answer, “I have only told a half of what I saw!”

Understanding Graphics(图表)
When we are reading, we often see one or two graphics in a text. Have you ever thought about these questions: Why are they there? What information do they give? Do they help with our reading and understanding?
Graphics are things like pictures, maps, charts and tables. They give information to readers. Very often, we can see different kinds of graphics in books, magazines and newspapers. Writers use graphics to get readers' attention and give them some particular(特别的) information. Graphics help to understand the given information in a text. And graphics put the information in a particular order so that it's easy to understand when we take a quick look.
It is not always true that a picture is worth a thousand words. But many things are easier to show than to tell and they may also be easier to understand. Graphics are just the right things that give a great deal of information but it doesn't take much time to read and understand.
The right way to read and understand a graphic is to look at the picture and the words together. In a graphic, only a few words are used to explain what the picture shows you. Sometimes, numbers and percentages(百分比) are also given to go with the words to explain things.
Now look at the graphic on the right. It is how a researcher used a graphic to show the number of hours spent sleeping by British teenagers each day. Can you understand it?

3.When we read a graphic, we should .?
A.find out if there are any tables in it
B.put the information in the right order
C.count how many words there are in it
D.look at the picture and the words together
4.The graphic given in the passage tells us that .?
A.5 British teenagers sleep for 8~9 hours every day
