Knowledge objectives:
Recognize and use the new words.
Enable the Ss to learn what humor means and what nonverbal humor is.
Ability objectives:
Improve the reading skills while reading,ie, skimming and scanning as well as translating, interpreting and word guessing abilities.
Improve the critical thinking ability.
Emotional objectives:
By learning the passage, the Ss should know that humor is particular to each culture, so English humor is different from Chinese humor.
However, nonverbal humor can be appreciated by all cultures.
Learn from Chaplin and be optimistic and determined.
Main and difficult teaching points:
Help the students learn how to understand and enjoy English humor.
Help the Ss know the difference between Chinese humor and English humor.

Teaching procedures
Step one Lead-in
1.In order for the students to get into the topic quickly and smoothly, a piece of sketch video ‘Not short of money’ will be played for the students.
Ask Ss: Do you feel funny?
What makes you funny? Words, actions, clothes or other things?
What kind of humor do you know?(Get the Ss to talk about types of humor)
2.Look at some Chinese famous comedians and westerm ones. And then watch two videos about Chaplin.
Step two Prediction
Get the Ss to look at title A master of nonverbal humor and the pictures and then predict what the text is about.
Ask the Ss: What do you think the text is about?
Step three Skimming
Have the Ss skim through the passage, and then answer the following questions and find out the main idea of each paragraph.
Who is the main character of the text? What was he famous for?
How many famous films or characters are mentioned in the text? What are the names?
Match the main idea with each paragraph.
Step four Scanning
Get the SS to scan the passage quickly and then fill in the blanks about Chaplin’s information.
Step five Careful reading
Get the Ss to read the text carefully and then answer the following questions.
1. Why do people enjoy seeing other people’s bad luck?
2. Why is The Little Tramp well known ?
3. How was the little tramp dressed?
4.Why did people go to California at that time?
5. What was Chaplin given a special Oscar for?
Step six Post reading
