Leaders shape history and here is a selection of the most remarkable views into these public figures plus first?hand accounts by those with access to them.
Margaret Thatcher by Charles Moore (2013)
Before Moore published the first volume of his biography, there had already been a mountain of books on Thatcher.Moore’s account is different. He shows that far from being fearless, she could often be fearful without cause. The final volume will include her fall from power.
Harold Wilson by Ben Pimlott (1992)
Harold Wilson had become a ghostly figure when this book was published in 1992.The absence heightened a sense of mystery.Who was he? How to explain his seemingly contradictory characteristics? Pimlott solves some of the mysteries; the book is detailed until Wilson’s final phase as prime minister in 1974.
Churchill by Roy Jenkins (2001)
Jenkins writes as a politician as well as a historian, analyzing Churchill’s historic moves from the opinions of one who had also spoken in the Commons.Jenkins had resigned from high positions in battles over policy, and as one that changed parties, though not as frequently as Churchill did.
Roy Jenkins by John Campbell (2014)
Campbell calmly narrates many political and personal dramas, including Jenkins’ intense relationship with Anthony Crosland when they were both students at Oxford.Campbell also addresses Jenkins’ various affairs with women.Like Jenkins’ political heroes, he led many lives. Campbell is sharp in describing each of them.
Diaries, Volumes One to Six by Alastair Campbell (2017)
Love or hate him, Campbell remains the master of the inside story, not just because of his unusual ideas on the relationship between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. This is an incredibly detailed book on what it’s like to live inside No.10: the cruel space of events; and the constant conflict with the media.

(2019·洛阳第一次统考)I left England for Sydney in September. It was a career move for my husband, and our 20?year?old daughter was feeling adventurous and decided to come, too. However, just before leaving England, my 79?year?old mother suffered a stroke(中风).Being strong and independent, she continues to live at home with the help of social services. But she couldn’t look after the garden.I thought how wonderful it would be if there was an organization offering volunteer help.Friends asked me what I planned to do in Australia, and I told them I would be looking for a volunteer position with a gardening charitable organization.Imagine my surprise when I found just the organization I had been looking for—Easy Care Gardening (ECG)!
There are several reasons why I volunteer for ECG.Firstly, as a newcomer to Australia I meet many great people who, like me, volunteer some of their time.We cover a large age range, but all love gardens and helping others.
Secondly, through working with ECG I have been lucky enough to explore Sydney’s North Shore that I might not have had the opportunity to visit otherwise.
Finally, there are all those wonderful people who we call “clients(客户)”, but are more like friends when we visit them often and tend their gardens. What great people I have met, and stories they have to tell—the family histories, where they come from and the reasons for immigrating to Australia.I find it a privilege to have access to private gardens which, in many cases, have been the joy of their owners for many years. Each one is individual and reflects the character, needs and the history of each family.Indeed, the gardens reflect the multicultural and historical background of Sydney.

(2019·河北五个一名校联盟第二次考试)Imagine this scene: it’s blowing outside, and you snuggle(蜷伏) up on the sofa under a warm quilt, chatting and recalling with your closest friends.
That content, cosy feeling, has a name in Danish—hygge. And, as Denmark recently won the title of “the happiest country in the world”, the concept of hygge is known to more and more people interested in finding ways to understand this concept.
Hygge—originally from a Norwegian word meaning well?being—doesn’t have an exact equivalent(对应物) in English. It’s often translated as coziness, or as blogger Anna West told the BBC, “coziness of the soul”.But, professor Maren Spark explains, “Hygge was never meant to be translated. It was meant to be felt.”
Basically, hygge involves creating a warm, cosy atmosphere and enjoying it with your loved ones.Danish winters are long and dark, so achieving hygge is particularly relevant during this season.A typical hygge activity during winter could be enjoying delicious homemade food and light?hearted conversation with friends—preferably in the warm glow of candlelight, or maybe sipping a glass of wine in the hot tub after a day spent skiing.
However, hygge isn’t only limited to the cold winter months—it can also describe that warm, fuzzy feeling you get after a walk through a forest with friends on a summer’s day or a family barbecue in the park.Hygge is meant to be shared.

9.What do the underlined sentences by Maren Spark mean?
A.The translation of the word “hygge” is not good enough.
B.Only Danish speakers know what “hygge” means.
C.“Hygge” is easy to translate but hard to feel.
D.We can get the true meaning of “hygge” by feeling it.
10.Which of the following can be best described as a “hygge” activity?
A.Skiing in the cold winter months.
B.Living through long dark winters.
C.Taking afternoon tea with friends.

(2019·广州调研测试)Petrol and diesel cars may still dominate our roads, but their days are numbered. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 per cent of daily car journeys in the U.S. That figure could rise to 98 per cent by 2020.
One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety”—drivers’ concerns about running out of juice on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the U.S.A.
Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed quite considerably over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their large price tags drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars is starting to persuade critics. Plug?in cars will soon give internal combustion engine models a run for their money.
As well as advancements on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol?powered outboard motors took over. Now,the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flight a reality.
Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions. Were the U.S. to act on the study’s findings and replace 87 per cent of its cars with electric vehicles,it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 per cent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim to be completely emission?free. That said,as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.

⑨life改为lives。
⑩us改为them。
