Teaching Plan—Warming up & Reading 1
Learning Objectives:
Learn some geographical knowledge about Canada such as its
population, major cities and natural beauty, etc.
Master some basic reading skills, including skimming and scanning.
Improve awareness of cross-cultural communication.
Teaching Important Points:
Enable students to understand the passage.
Enable students to express themselves by using the phrases and
sentence structures in this passage.
Teaching Difficult Points:
How to make students better understand the passage.
How to apply the useful phrases and structures in daily
communication.
Teaching Aids:
A computer, textbooks, chalks
Teaching Steps:
Step 1. Warming up
Lead in by pictures and questions.
T: Show the picture of the national flag of Canada, and then ask the
following two questions.
Which country does the national flag refer to?
What’s in the middle of the flag?
Introduce two national emblems in Canada, the beaver and maple leaf
by presenting the pictures.
(A saying about Canada: “If you have never seen Canada in the fall, you have never known the meaning of brightly colored.” to arouse students’ interest in Canada)
Invite students to say something else about Canada, for example, the
location of Canada.
Follow the author to take a trip to Canada.
Step 2. Pre-reading
T: Ask the students to look at the fllowng picture and read the title of the passage, then guess what “The True North” refers to.
Step 2. While-reading
First reading
Read the passage quickly and think about the following two tasks.
What’s the main idea of the passage?
Figure out the basic information of the trip and summarize the main
idea of the passage.
Sample: The passage is about a trip of two girls, and it tells some
information about Canada.
Draw the route of the journey in Canada.
(The major cities they have passed through)
Vancouver—(Rocky Mountains)—Calgary—Thunder Bay—Toronto—
Montreal
Second reading
Read for detailed information of the trip and finish the following tasks.
Task focus 1: Fill in the blanks
A competition between boys and girls to see which group performs better.
Task focus 2: Answer the following questions
When Li Daiyu and Liu Qian crossed the Rocky Mountains, what
animals did they see?
What happens at the Calgary Stampede?
Task focus 3:
First, complete the travel route with key words to describe each place.
Then, present your route map and introduce one or two places that interest you most.
Step 3. After-reading—Group Work
Suppose there is a TV Tourist Program called “Follow me to Canada”, and make up an interview. In this interview, there are three roles, the host/hostess, Li Daiyu and Liu Qian, who will talk about the travelling experience in Canada. The students can refer to the questions or sentence patterns shown on PPT. Then some groups will be invited to give a performance in front of the class.
Step 4. Summary
This passage is about Canada and trip. Actually, last year is China-Canada Year of Torrism. To celebrate the 2018 Year of Tourism, children from Beijing Art Theatre gave a performance called “Panda Twins”. As teenagers, I hope that if you have a chance to visit Canada, while exploring, experiencing and enjoying the mystery, culture and beauty of the multicultural country, remember to convey our traditional Chinese culture to Canada to make the relationship between the two countries better and better.
Step 5. Assignment
Write a short passage to introduce Canada, including the major cities, the beautiful scenery and natural resources, etc.
