二、阅读理解。
There was no ordinary class. The students who came together were all science or engineering professors at Cornell University. They had interrupted their research to accept an invitation to take part in an unusual experiment: “an interesting week of poetry.” This class was part of a study to answer the questions: Why is science difficult for many non-science students? What can teachers learn about teaching if they take a class that is not in their field?
The students in the poetry class listened to lectures and took notes. They had reading tasks and had to write three short papers. All students noticed one thing—the importance of spoken words. In science and engineering classes, the instructors put tables and drawings on the blackboard. But in this poetry class, the instructors just talked. They didn't write anything on the board.
The scientists and engineers noticed one similarity between science and poetry. In both subjects, students need to find layers(层次) of meaning. Some layers are simple, clean, and on the surface; other layers are deeper and more difficult. This search for different levels of meaning doesn't happen much in undergraduate(本科) science classes, but it is important later, in graduate school. And it is always important in humanities(人文科学).
Both the poetry instructors and their students learned something about teaching from this experience. One poetry instructor, for example, now sees the importance of using informative as he teaches. Most of the scientists agreed on several points. First, humanities classes might help science students to see patterns and decide which information is important. Second, the poetry class was fun. One engineer decided, “We need to change the way we teach engineering to make it an enjoyable experience for students.”
But perhaps the most important result of the experience was this: All of the professors began to think about how they teach and how they can teach better.
1. What do we know about this unusual class?
A. The teachers did lots of writing on the board.
B. The teachers were invited to attend several lectures.
C. The students were professors from a university.
D. The students were studying science and humanities.
2. The experiment was designed to find out ?.
A. how to teach the students in the science class
B. whether poetry is difficult for science students
C. what to be taught in the humanities class
D. why many humanities students find science hard
3. Finding levels of meaning is ?.
A. important for graduate students in humanities
B. difficult for graduate students in humanities
C. common for undergraduate students in science
D. easy for undergraduate students in science
4. What did the science professors learn after the experiment?
A. They should change the way they teach.
B. A poem could be explained in clear definitions.
C. A poetry class could be more informative.
D. Their teaching was an enjoyable experience.

Dear friends,
Welcome to our school. Now please allow me to introduce our lab to you.
In recent years, our school develops quickly and great changes have taken place here. On the one hand, we have wide and bright labs which are equipped with all kinds of advanced laboratory facilities.
On the other hand, the science teachers who teach us physics and chemistry are very excellent. They always make classes lively, interesting and meaningful. And the students always listen carefully, think deeply and practice actively according to the teachers’ instructions. Therefore, our abilities to observe and practice improve rapidly.
As students, each of us treasures the beneficial conditions and tries to make good use of our lab.

There are many interesting science experiments out there for young kids. You can wow your friends and teachers with them. All you have to do is to put a little effort into it and you should have no problem coming up with an interesting science experiment. One such experiment is to show your friends and teachers that you can make mothballs (樟脑丸) dance!
If you want to do it, first, be sure that you have got all the necessary science kits for your science experiment.
What you need for this experiment is a glass filled half full with water. Add a little bit of vinegar to your glass of water, about 1/3 or 1/4 of a cup (60 ml), and one teaspoon (10 ml) of baking soda, and then carefully stir the mixture. Drop a few mothballs into the glass and have your audience watch. As long as the surfaces of the mothballs become fairly rough, they should begin to bounce up and down in the glass.
You can also do a similar experiment with raisins (葡萄干) and clear pop, such as Sprite. In this experiment, all you have to do is to fill a glass with Sprite and drop a few raisins into it. The raisins should begin to bounce up and down in the glass of Sprite. You can also replace the raisins with mothballs and you should get the same effect in the Sprite. This project works because the irregular surfaces of the mothballs and the raisins hold some CO2 bubbles (气泡), causing them to bounce up and down in a dancing motion.
1. The writer wrote this passage to ____________.
A. explain why some science experiments are easy
B. encourage people to spend more time on science
C. tell us how good he is at doing science experiments
D. teach kids how to do an easy and interesting science experiment
2. What is the most probable name of the experiment?
A. Producing mothballs.
B. Dancing mothballs.
C. Changing mothballs.
D. Swimming mothballs.
3. The underlined word “pop” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to a ____________.
A. mothball
B. kind of vinegar
C. drink with bubbles
D. special kind of raisin
4. From the last paragraph we can know ____________.
A. why Sprite has some CO2 bubbles
B. what people usually use Sprite for
C. what scientists usually do with raisins
D. why the mothballs bounce up and down
