In Britain there are 11 national daily newspapers and most people read them every day. There are two kinds of newspapers. One is large in size and has many detailed articles about national and international events. These newspapers are called the serious papers or the quality papers. The other kind, called the tabloids(通俗小报), are smaller in size, have more pictures, often in colour, and shorter articles, often about less important events or about the private lives of well-known people.
Although some people don’t support tabloids, more people buy them than the people buy the serious newspapers. The Sun, for example, which is a tabloid, is the biggest selling newspaper in Britain. The tabloids are sometimes called the gutter(低级趣味) press. And in 1997, some photograph reporters of the tabloids were said to be involved in the tragic(悲剧的) death of Princess Diana in France and they were criticized as gossip reporter by the public.
Most national newspapers in Britain express a political opinion and people choose the newspaper that they read according to their own political beliefs. Most of the newspapers are rightwing(右翼)which means they support the Conservative Party(保守党). These are the Daily Telegraph (serious newspaper), the Daily Express, Daily Mail, Daily Star, the Sun and Today (all tabloids). Of the other serious newspapers, The Times, the oldest newspaper in Britain, did not formerly have one strong political view but it is now more rightwing. The Independent does not support any one political party, and neither does the Financial Times, which concentrates on business and financial news. The Daily Mirror (tabloid) is the voice of the Labour Party.

第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
My name is Clara. When I was in the sixth grade, I won the essay contest NASA held to name its next Mars rover (火星车). The essay I wrote was only 250 words long, but somehow it was enough to change my life.
I still remember that cold December day. Sitting in science class, I’d finished a worksheet early and got a Time for kids. In the magazine, there was an article about a girl who named the Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. The article also talked about the essay contest NASA was holding to name its next Mars rover. Before I even knew anything else about it, a single word flooded my eleven-year-old mind: Curiosity. I raced home from the bus stop, sat down at the computer, and typed until my fingers ached.
Five months later, shortly after I had turned twelve, I was watching TV when the phone rang. My mom answered and told me that I had won. I screamed and ran all around the house.
I have always been enthusiastic about the stars. I remember as a little girl, my grandfather and I would sit together in the backyard for hours. He’d tell me stories and point out constellations (星座). They are always there, yet there was so much I didn’t know about them. My grandfather lived in China, thousands of miles away from my home in Kansas, USA. They also kept us together even when we were apart.
This December it will be four years of my life that have been tied to Curiosity in some way. I’ve met so many amazing people through this experience, from scientists to volunteers. My journey with Curiosity has shaped the person that I am today, as well as the person I would one day like to become.

Probably no other musical instrument is as popular as the guitar around the world. Musicians use the guitar for almost all kinds of music. Country and western music would not be the same without a guitar. The traditional Spanish folk music called Flamenco could not exist without a guitar. The sound of American blues music would not be the same without the sad cry of the guitar. And rock and roll music would almost be impossible without this instrument.
Music experts do not agree about where the guitar was first played. Most agree it is ancient. Some experts say an instrument very much like a guitar was played in Egypt more than 1,000 years ago. Most experts say that the ancestor of the modern guitar was brought to Spain from Persia sometime in the 12th century. The guitar continued to develop in Spain. In the 1700s it became similar to the instrument we know today.
Many famous musicians played the instrument. The famous Italian violins Niccole Paganism played and wrote music for the guitar in the early 1800s. Franz Schubert used the guitar to write some of his famous works. In modern times Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia helped make the instrument extremely popular. In the 1930s, Les Paul began experimenting to make an electric guitar. He invented the solid-bodied electric guitar in 1946. The Gibson Guitar Company began producing its famous Les Paul Guitar in 1952. It became a powerful influence on popular music. The instrument has the same shape and the same six strings (弦)as the traditional guitar, but it sounds very different.
Les Paul produced a series of extremely popular recordings that introduced the public to this music. Listen to this Les Paul recording. It was the fifth most popular song in the United States in 1952. It is called “Meet Mister Callaghan.”
5. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To show the popularity of the guitar. B. To explain the functions of the guitar

A. Franz Schubert made the guitar very popular.
B. The guitar plays a very important role in music.
C. All musicians are good at playing the guitar.
D. Without the guitar, there would be no music.
7. When was the electric guitar widely used in popular music?
A. From the early 1920s. B. From the early 1930s.
C. From the early 1940s. D. From the early 1950s.
8. Where does the passage probably come from?

Sweet or salty? What kind of tastes do you like? If like me, you have a sweet tooth, you probably can't resist eating cakes, biscuits or chocolate and will sweeten your tea or coffee with spoonfuls of sugar – delicious! But the taste makes it very easy to ignore the warnings that too much of the white stuff is bad for our health.
Consuming sugar is an addiction — the more we eat, the more we want. Today’s processed(加工)food, like ready meals, is related to the stuff and many fizzy(起泡的)drinks contain seven teaspoons of sugar in just one can. In the UK, statistics show that sugar consumption is at its highest level in history and the government is trying to get the food industry to cut the amount of sugar in popular products like chocolate bars by 20% by 2020.
Of course, sugary food tastes nice, it can help lift our mood and refresh us. But there are dangers too: a high-sugar diet is linked to putting on weight, and being overweight can increase the risk of getting type 2 diabetes(糖尿病). With these warning signs, I have considered changing my diet by replacing sugary snacks with fruit and salty biscuits — but that’s boring, I need my sugar fix!
I’m not alone. BBC journalist Radhika Shanghani, has gone one step further. Encouraged by some celebrities and nutritionists, she gave it up altogether, thinking it would make her healthier. Initially she says, “My first fortnight involves mood swings. I have disturbing headaches and feel permanently hung-over.” These symptoms disappeared but she still found food shopping hard as she was stressing about buying the right things.
Her experiment wasn’t a success. She eventually sought advice from Professor Susan Jebb, who said: “Lots of people enjoy sugar and gain pleasure from it, so one has to find a balance between enjoyment and eating the right amount.”
13. According to the passage, a person with a sweet tooth is most likely to ________.
A. be tired of chocolate B. enjoy drinking sweet tea
C. be very fond of black coffee D. dislike eating sweet cakes
14. What can we infer from the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs?
A. Processed food contains no sugar.
B. Sugar consumption is all bad for us.
C. People in UK tend to consume less sugar.
D. Chocolate bars are popular with the British.
15. Why does the author want to change his diet?
A. To enjoy sugar-free food. B. To quit his boring life.
C. T o avoid being overweight. D. To cheer himself up.
