Confucius (551-479 BC), Chinese philosopher, one of the most influential man in the history of China. Confucius was born in a noble family in the state of Lu. However, his parents were poor. His father died when Confucius was only three years old. In 527 BC he began his life as a teacher, usually traveling about and teaching the followers that were around him. Confucius worked as an official of the state of Lu. However, he soon left office to travel and teach. In 484 BC he returned to Lu, where he lived until his death.
Living in the turbulent period, Confucius believed that people must go back to the principles of the ancient wise men. He therefore lectured to his pupils on the classics and taught them how to behave properly in society. Confucius did not write down the principles of his philosophy. The Analects, a work written by some of his followers, is considered the most faithful source of information about his life and teachings.
The teachings of Confucius were practical and moral, rather than religious. He said that man’s behavior should be based on five virtues: kindness, uprightness(义), decorum(礼), wisdom and faithfulness(信). He asked everyone to fulfill their duties carefully toward the state. In the centuries after his death, his teachings, known as Confucianism, had a powerful influence on the Chinese nation.

Many countries honor workers and the labor movement on May Day. May Day is one of the oldest holidays around the world. Experts say many ancient peoples chose May1 to celebrate the rebirth of nature in springtime. The Romans held a festival of flowers on the first day of May. Their celebrations became a tradition in Britain, Ireland and Scotland. May Day celebrated the beauty of spring after a long, cold winter.
Nowadays, in Ireland and Scotland, May Day is one of the most important holidays of the year. Especially in the countryside, on May 1, people gather flowers before sunrise. They sing and dance as they return home. Then they decorate their houses with these beautiful flowers.
In England, villagers pick flowers and then gather in the center of town. They choose a young woman as May Queen. She will sit in a special area surrounded by flowers. The people perform for her. They sing, dance and hold competitions, sports events and parades(游行). They place flowers on a tall piece of wood called a Maypole. They then place the pole in the ground and dance around it. In some parts of the country, children still dance around a Maypole. They collect flowers and give them to friends and family members.
In early America, settlers from England did not approve of such activities. So they did not celebrate May Day. But settlers from other countries in Europe brought May Day traditions to America. May Day events in America soon became a celebration of nature. But they don’t honor workers and the labor movement on May Day.
