As everybody knows, the traffic problem in our city is becoming more and more serious.
During the rush hours, the roads are very crowded. And the accident rate becomes higher than before. I think it’s time for the government to take measures to solve this problem.
First of all, we should repair the roads, for some of the roads are in bad condition and it is difficult for drivers to go through. Secondly, we should build more overpasses so as to cut down traffic jams. Thirdly, the production of cars should also be controlled.
I believe if these measures are taken, the traffic problem will be solved or at least the accident rate will be lowered. I do hope our government will accept my suggestions.

The private automobile(私家车) has long played an important role in the United States. In fact,it has become a necessary and important part of the American way of life. In 1986, sixty-nine percent of American families owned at least one car, and thirty-eight percent had more than one. By giving workers rapid transportation, the automobile has freed them from having to live near their place of work. This has encouraged the growth of the cities, but it has also led to traffic problems.
For farm families the automobile is very helpful. It has made it possible for them to travel to town very often for business and for pleasure, and also to transport their children to distant schools.
Family life has been affected(影响) in various ways. The car helps to keep families together when it is used for picnics, outings, and other shared experiences. However, when teenager children have the use of the car, their parents can’t keep an eye on them. There is a great danger if the driver has been drinking alcohol or taking drugs—or is “showing off” by speeding or breaking other traffic laws. Mothers of victims(受害者) of such accidents have formed an organization called MADD(Mothers Against Drunk Driving). These women want to prevent further tragedies(悲剧). They have worked to encourage the government to limit the youngest drinking age. Students have formed a similar organization SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving)and are spreading the same message among their friends.

A green light means traffic is moving forty-five miles an hour, yellow means thirty to forty-five miles an hour, and red means heavy traffic cars standing still or moving less than thirty miles an hour.
“See that red light near Austin Avenue(大道)?” the controller asked a visitor. “There’s a repair truck fixing the road, and the traffic has to go around it.”
At the Roosevelt Road entrance to the expressway, the light kept changing from green to red and back to green again. “A lot of trucks get on the expressway there,” the controller explained.
“They can’t speed up as fast as cars.”
The sensors(传感器) show immediately where an accident or a stopped car is blocking traffic, and a truck is sent by radio to clear the road. The system has lowered the number of accidents by 18 percent. There are now 1.4 deaths on Chicago’s expressways for each one hundred million miles travelled, while in other parts of the country there are 2.6.
Traffic experts say that the Chicago system is the “coming thing”. Systems like Chicago’s are already in use on some expressways in Los Angeles and Houston. “Chicago has taken the lead,” says New York City’s traffic director, and he adds, “We are far behind...”
