Looking for some places out of this world to visit on vacation? Here are four cool places to visit.
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex
Located (位于)in the east of Orlando,Florida,it’s considered as the greatest space adventure
on Earth. You can meet astronauts, eat space food, watch movies about past space missions, and if

The Lowell Observatory, located on Mars Hill overlooking Flagstaff, was built in the late 1800s
by Massachusetts astronomyenthusiast Percival Lowell to help him study Mars. Visitors to Lowell

On my granddaughter Mary’s 21st birthday,I sat with her and her expired (过期的)driver’s
license on a hard wooden bench at the DMV (the Department of Motor Vehicles),waiting for our
number to be called. The broadcast system announced numbers to call ticket holders to reach the
desk to take an eye test or renew a registration. I felt as though we were staying at a bingo game,
waiting for the winning number to be called so we could jump up and collect the prize.
And on that bench,I had a thought:The seemingly ordinary events I’ve shared with my
granddaughter were both my adventures and my rewards for just showing up. I grew up in an
immigrant (移民)family in the suburb of Boston. A vacation for us was a bus trip to Central
Square, with shopping bags filled with delicious foods like hard?boiled eggs, followed by the muddy
sand sucking our toes.
I looked forward to these small outings. It sounded boring to seek out the simple pleasures, but
it was not. I traveled to remote islands,to Europe, and to many of America’s cities. Those trips
were refreshing, but they were breaks. I prefer the mainstream of the ordinary.
I like the day trips. But the most wonderful time was when Mary and I stayed in the reading
room. We talked about her homework, and played the roles of two thinkers discussing the
Enlightenment (启蒙运动). We had our private book club, reading A Prayer for Owen Meany and
copying the voice of the main character.
All of these ordinary moments are more valuable than the time it will take to travel around the
world. Many people love adventures, like skydiving or climbing Mount Everest. But that is not who
I am. I don’t need those adventure experiences. In the end,it turns out that just showing up is
enough for me.
24. What was the author doing at the DMV according to Paragraph 1?
A. Being with Mary to renew a license.
B. Preparing to take a driving exam.
C. Playing a bingo game with Mary.
D. Celebrating Mary’s 21st birthday.
25. Why does the author mention her childhood?
高二英语试卷第5 页(共10页)
A. To express her enthusiasm for traveling.
B. To show her simple pleasures as a kid.
C. To show her identity as an immigrant.
D. To make a comparison with her life afterwards.
26. What can be implied about the author from the text?
A. She was fond of reading by herself.
B. She served as the best teacher for Mary.
C. She had a good relationship with Mary.
D. She was a sociable and caring grandmother.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The unforgettable experience at DMV
B. My pleasant childhood memories
C. My life with my granddaughter
D. Happiness from ordinary events
C
Your next car might drive itself. After years of trials on city streets, driverless vehicles(车辆)
are now nearing the practical use. Last month,a driverless bus began carrying passengers through
Lyon,France. Most in the automobile industry think self?driving vehicles will be on the road by
2020.
Driverless cars will at first be huddled with human?driven cars. But the first places where they
will become dominant(占优势的)are crowded urban areas—exactly the spots most damaged by the
car age. Many advanced cities are already reducing the role of human?driven vehicles. Driverless
cars will quicken that process and will bring us enormous benefits.
Driverless cars will reduce accidents by around 90 per cent. That’s big—the annual death toll
on the world’s roads is about 1. 2 million a year. Pollution and carbon emission(排放)will drop,
because urban driverless cars will be electric. The old, otherwise, would stay at home most of the
time and the disabled and teenagers will suddenly gain mobility.
On the other hand, driverless cars will bring terrible results. The best thing about the car age
was that it employed tens of millions of people to make, market, insure and drive vehicles. Over the
next 20 years, the mostly low?skilled men who now drive trucks, taxis and buses will see their jobs
reduced. Car?makers are especially scared. The few cars of the future might be made by tech
companies such as Apple,Baidu and Google. Imagine the influences on Germany, where there is
the largest vehicle industry.
Dramatic change is coming, and driverless cars could arrive by 2020. But governments have
hardly begun thinking about it. Only 6 per cent of the biggest US cities have considered them in
their long?term planning.
高二英语试卷第6 页(共10页)
Ten years ago, anyone hardly saw the smartphone coming. But now it is so common in our daily
life. Let’s hope we do a better job of handling the driverless car.
28. Which can replace the underlined words “be huddled with”in Paragraph 2?
A. Show up. B. Exist together.
C. Get rid of. D. Take the place of.
29. Why can driverless cars reduce pollution and carbon emission?
A. They will be powered by electricity.
B. They will reduce the number of cars.
C. They will save fuel by driving themselves.
D. They will reduce too many accidents.
30. What can we know about driverless cars?
A. They will not hit the road until 2020.
B. They will only be used in urban areas.
C. They will not cause any road accident.
D. They aren’t still seriously taken officially.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards driverless cars?
A. Doubtful. B. Praising. C. Hopeful. D. Worried.
D
It may be time to tailor students’class timetables to their natural biological rhythms (节律),
according to a new study.
Researchers tracked the personal daily online activity records of nearly 15,000 college
students. Based on their activities on days when they were not in class, firstly the researchers
divided the students into different sorts. They are “night owls”—students who enjoy staying awake
all night,“daytime finches”—students who are active in the daytime, and “morning larks”—
students who get up early. Then the researchers compared their class times with their academic
results.
Their findings showed that students whose biological rhythms were out of step with their class
timetables, for example, night owls taking early morning courses, received lower grades. This
disagreement is caused by the “social jet lag”(社会性时差)—a condition in which one’s peak
watchfulness times are in disagreement with work, school or other demands. “We found that most
students were being jet?lagged by their class times, which was related very strongly with their
dropping academic performance,”said Benjamin Smarr.
“Our research indicates that if a student can always keep the same schedule pattern in which
class days resemble non?class days, they are more likely to achieve academic success,”said Aaron
Schirmer. While students of all categories suffered from class?caused jet lag,the study found that
night owls were especially to be affected easily. But it’s not as simple as students just staying up too
高二英语试卷第7 页(共10页)
late. “Because owls are later and classes tend to be earlier, this mismatch hits owls the hardest, but
we notice that larks and finches who take later classes also suffer from the mismatch,”said Smarr.
Different people really do have biologically various timing,so there isn’t a one?time?fits?all way
for education. The results suggest that “rather than warn late students to go to bed earlier,in
disagreement with their biological rhythms,we should work to individualize (使个性化)education.
In this way, learning and classes are structured to take advantage of knowing at what time of day a
given student will be most fit to learn,”Smarr said.
32. Why did the researchers carry out the new study?
A. To make timetables more suitable to students’biological rhythms.
B. To analyze the causes of students’different sleeping patterns.
C. To ask students to pay more attention to their health.
D. To keep?track of students’daily online activities.
33. Which is probably the main cause of students’poor grades?
A. Tight class timetables. B. Biological diversity.
C. Social jet lag. D. High academic demands.
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Education should be individualized.
B. Biologically various timing calls for proper solutions.
C. Education should focus on students’full development.
D. Students should adapt themselves to various education patterns.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Students should keep a busy timetable.
B. Students should have good sleeping habits.
C. Students have biologically various timing.
D. Biological rhythms matter in students’grades.
