M: I’m sorry! I fell asleep for one second. It’s late, and I’m tired. We’ve driven ten hours already! I need to stop and rest.

Text 9
W: Sometimes I just can’t figure out why some people always buy famous brands such as LV or Nike. What do you think about that, Tom?
M: Maybe they think that famous brands can make them feel good. You know, producers of famous brands spend a lot of money on their advertising. They want people to know that they are good enough to afford the best.
W: I can understand the influence of advertisements on people. But some people do not make that much money but spend half of their incomes on famous brands.
M: Oh, I see. Some people probably need to wear brand-name clothing to feel special and fashionable. They don’t want to be a nobody in the crowd.
W: Well, that’s one of the reasons why they spend so much. They want to keep up with changing fashions, so they buy regardless of the price.
M: As far as I am concerned, I will buy things that are good in quality at reasonable prices. There are also many cheap things with good quality. I never want to be a victim of advertisements.
W: I couldn’t agree more.
Text 10
M: In any large city in the United States, you can find many international restaurants. This is because there are many people who left their country to settle in large cities. And in these cities, they open restaurants. Americans also like the food from other nations. There is a wide range of foods and cooking styles from many different countries. In San Francisco, for example, you can find French, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, and Vietnamese restaurants. International food is popular for several reasons. First, some types of food are very fashionable, such as French and Italian. Many families celebrate a special event by eating in a gorgeous French or Italian restaurant, where there may be many courses in a meal. In addition, some international food is cheap. Many Mexican and Chinese restaurants serve large meals that are not very expensive. Finally, some kinds of international foods are healthy. For example, Japanese restaurants serve fresh fish and vegetables cooked with little fat. If you live in a city in North America, you can eat in an Iranian restaurant one night and in a Mexican restaurant the next. You can enjoy wonderful dishes and learn about food from all over the world.
