Text 1
W: Did you go to the concert last night?
M: Oh, it was supposed to start at 8:00 pm, but it was delayed 15 minutes.
Text 2
W: I don’t understand how you got a ticket. I always thought you were a careful driver.
M: I usually am. But I had thought I could make it before the light turned.
Text 3
W: Do you get up at 7:00 every morning?
M: Yes, and I need 9 hours of sleep.
Text 4
M: Do you know Mr. Green works in a hospital?
W: Yes. I heard that the hospital is near the railway station.
Text 5
W: I can’t find the starting time for the Shanghai to Beijing train on this schedule.
M: Look for Shanghai in the left-hand column and follow it across until you find the hour listed in the Beijing column.
Text 6
M: What do you do, Rose?
W: I’m a lawyer.
M: Do you like your job?
W: Yes, I do. The work is very interesting. I get on well with my colleagues.
M: Are there any bad things?
W: Well, I work for very long hours…Ten hours a day is quite normal. And if something important comes up, I’m often in the office until eight or nine in the evening. Or I take work home. The other bad thing is that I don’t have many holidays, only twenty days a year. Actually, I’d prefer less money and more holidays.
Text 7
M: You look upset, Monica.
W: It was our boss.
M: Then you were late again?
W: Yeah. You know, my husband was away on business. My child had a fever last night. I had little sleep all night. I must have turned off the alarm clock and gone back to sleep again.
M: Did our boss accept your excuse?
W: Well, he was mad at me. But I promised it wouldn’t happen again.
Text 8
W: Excuse me, sir. I’m a stranger here and have lost my way.
M: Where would you like to go?
W: I want to return to my hotel, the New York Hotel.
M: Oh, it’s quite near here. You just turn left and walk three blocks and you’ll find your place.
W: Thank you very much, sir. By the way, could you direct me to Central Park?
M: You can take the subway near your hotel and get off at the 59th Street.
W: Can I walk there?
M: No. It’s too far for you to walk. It might take you three quarters of an hour.
W: I’ve got it, thank you.
M: You are welcome.
Text 9
W: Mr. Black, I need to take a few days off because my parents are coming over to visit.
M: But it’s not really a good idea to take time off right now, you know.
W: I know, but they’ve never been to the UK before and they can’t speak English.
M: Um, you know there are thousands of tourists in London who can’t speak English and they manage to get around.
W: Yes, I know. But they really expect me to be there. It’s cultural differences. Chinese parents expect their children to do things like this.
M: I know. But actually, if they care about your education, they’ll understand.
W: Well, but do you think I could take maybe just two days off ?
M: OK, two days. But you must catch up with all of the work and get all of the materials.
Text 10
Good morning, everybody. My topic for today is “How to prepare for a job interview”. If you are looking for a new job, here are some job interview tips you should keep in mind. First, be sure to dress properly for the position. However, you don’t want to overdress for the interview either. Second, be sure to do some research on the company for which you are interviewing. This will help you know if you have the needed skills or experience to work for that company. Finding out something about the company will also help you ask clever questions about their business to show them that you are interested in their company. Finally, be prepared to tell them why you would be their best choice for the position. You don’t have to boast about your abilities and skills, but you can tell them in a confident and direct way why you can help their company better than other applicants.
