教学内容
课文主要讲述了门基乐队的特殊发展过程。学生并不熟悉这一乐队,所以用该乐队的视频和相关介绍进行导入能使学生对门基乐队有个初步了解。学生应从门基乐队的成功之路中找出他们的关键特质,并学习能够决定一个人成功与否的重要因素。

Warming up
Students give some names of the bands they are familiar with;
Students enjoy the video
Ask students which band sang the song I played before class and give names of some other bands which they are familiar with;
Introduce the Monkees and play a MV of their song.
通过播放Maroon 5的歌曲Sugar以及the Monkees的视频导入新课,激发学生学习兴趣,并使学生对门基乐队有个基本的了解。
Pre-reading
Students open their books and speak out the title of the passage;
Students may give different answers
Tell students we can learn more about the Monkees in our textbook and ask them to open their books and see the title of this passage --- The Band That Wasn't (Blackboard Writing); Guide students to predict the content of the passage by completing the title;
Check the answer a few minutes later.
正式进入课文阅读之前,引导学生学会预测文章内容,同时激发学生对门基乐队的好奇心,也为后面的阅读做铺垫。
Skimming
First students read the passage by themselves, divide the passage into several parts and summarize the main ideas of each part. Then have a discussion about their answers with their partners
Ask students to read the passage within two minutes and answer the questions on the screen: "How many parts can the passage be divided into? What is the main idea of each part?"
(2 minutes later)
Tell students to have a discussion with their partners when they finish reading;
Come back to the predicting question and check the answer.
让学生先自己独立阅读文章寻找答案,再与同学讨论得出答案,这种方式既锻炼了学生的自学能力,也能更好地掌握略读和归纳主旨大意等技巧;
Scanning
Students read the passage and give answers
In order to let students get some more detailed information, tell them to read the text again and find answers to questions on the screen
在每段中设置不同类型的问题,训练学生跳读文章和提取特定信息的阅读技能
Discussing (for moral education)
Students have a discussion in their groups and come up with as many adjectives as they can
Guide students to analyze the deep reasons of the Monkees' success and brainstorm the qualities of the Monkees that have made it so successful.

Tell students that these qualities are also needed to help them get into their dream universities. So they should study hard from now on.

Activity 1: Guessing game
Students tell the names of those bands actively
Play a guessing game. The topic today is "band", and at the beginning of the class students have mentioned some bands which they are familiar with. Let them guess which bands they are by listening to their songs and looking at the pictures.
文章阅读结束后,做一个猜测游戏,通过听歌和看图片猜乐队,从门基乐队扩展到学生们熟悉的其它乐队;这一活动让学生很感兴趣,能充分调动起学生的积极性,活跃课堂气氛,为下一活动做铺垫
Live performance
Students form different groups and decide which one to be the host/hostess, manager and performers;
Two bands come to the front of the classroom and give performances to the whole class;
Other students enjoy their show and clap hands for them.
After listening to songs of above bands. Ask students whether they have ever wanted to be part of a band. One of the biggest western festivals --Christmas is coming, guide students to imagine being invited to perform at the Christmas party. Divided the whole class into 10 groups. ask each group to form a band which includes:
1. A host/hostess (主持人): to introduce your band (name, reasons, …)
2. A manager (经纪人): to advertise your band (think of good ways to sell your band successfully)
3. Performers (表演者): to give a performance (singing, playing, dancing, …)
...
Ask two bands to play songs to the class in the front of the classroom and other students to enjoy their performances;
Make comments on their performances.
本活动给学生设定具体的情境:被邀请去圣诞派对上以乐队的身份做演出。通过让学生分工合作、组建乐队的方式,既培养了学生沟通协作的能力,激发了学生对英语学习的兴趣,也锻炼了学生的英语表达能力

Students have a discussion in groups and give their own opinions
Before class ends, let students discuss another question: What determines a person to be successful? What should you do to make your bands successful in the future?

1. Attitude is everything. We need to be serious at the work that we are doing now, and also to be confident of ourselves, and never lose hope.
2. Hard work pays off. No matter what we will be in the future, working hard is always the best and the only way for us to get what we want. As long as we work hard, our efforts will be rewarded one day.
3. Only time will tell. As the saying goes, Rome was not built in a day. Nobody can succeed without working hard for a long time. Good things are worth waiting. Stick to your dream and never give up!
