Reading: How Life Began on the Earth
教学设计
Before the start of the new lesson, students are guided to know their learning objects of this lesson.
Learning Objects
Know the formation of the earth and the development of life
Try to make a summary of this passage
Be able to dub (配音) the short film with what you have learnt today
Lead — in
Ask students some questions.
“Do you know The Black Hole ? Have you seen it with your own eyes? In your imagination, what does it look like? ”
A science news will be shown to students.

This news will arouse students’ interest in learning science knowledge.
Prediction
There is a title and some pictures. Students will predict the main idea from this useful information.
What information can you get first?
What is the passage about? ____________________________________
Fast reading
Students will be required to read the whole passage as quickly as they can.(2mins)
How can we catch the main idea of each paragraph very quickly?
Students should read the topic sentence in each paragraph. A good reading method will be given to them.
Write down the main idea of each paragraph.
Para.1: A theory about ____________________
Para.2: The formation of __________________
Para.3: The importance of ___________ for life
Para.4: The development of __________ and ___________
Para.5: The arrival of _________ and their effects on the earth
These 5 paragraphs should be divided into 2 parts.
Para 1—3 are Part One that talks about how the earth developed.
Para 4—5 are Part Two that talks about how life developed.
Students will get the structure of the whole passage from this part. Their prediction is right.
Careful reading
Students are required to read part one carefully to explore the origin of the earth. When they read, they are supposed to pick out some key words not the long sentences. Then fill in the blanks. (3mins)
Part 1(Para 1--3)

Did water appear only on the earth?
Why is there life only on the earth?
According to this time clue, students are required to retell the development of the earth. They have 2 minutes to prepare. Some of them will be invited to stand in the front of the classroom to show themselves. (2mins)
Part 2(Para 4--5)
When they read this part, students should pay attention to the time, animals as well as plants. They are supposed to draw a timeline by themselves. (3mins)

The teacher will explain the first picture to the students as an example. The students will explain the rest of the pictures.

According to this timeline, students have 3minutes to retell Part Two. Some of them will be invited to stand in the front of the classroom to show themselves. (2mins)
Making a summary
Students will put what they have learnt in this class into practice. They will make a summary according to these two time clues and write it down on their learning plan.
Dubbing the film
The teacher will show students a short video first. When the students enjoy it, they should combine their summary with this video and try to dub it. This film is about the development of the earth and life. This is the second time for students to practice their oral English, which will strengthen their confidence.
