Look at the following pictures and discuss some questions. The Greek sculptor Phidias created the 12-m (40-ft) tall Statue of Zeus in about 435 BC. The statue stood in Olympia, and was perhaps the most famous sculpture in ancient Greece. Phidias made the god’s robe and ornaments from gold and carved the body out of ivory. The Statue of Zeusplace where the Statue of Zeus was builtZeus is the supreme(至高无上的) god of ancient Greece Mythology(神话). The Statue of Zeus, sculpted(雕刻) by a great Greek artist in about 435 BC, was once located on the western coast of Greece. It was a seated figure of Zeus, holding his eagle-topped staff in his left
hand and the figure of
Nike (victory) in his
right hand. This is the statue of the god in whose honor the Ancient Olympic games were held. It was located on the land that gave its very name to the Olympics. At the time of the games, wars stopped, and athletes came from Asia Minor, Syria, Egypt, and Sicily to celebrate the Olympics and to worship their king of gods: Zeus. It is the name of a monument located in Agra, India. It was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife, Arjuman Banu Begum who was later known as Mumtaz Mahal and took 23 years to complete (1630-1653). The Taj Mahal The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal on the banks of the river Yamuna as a tomb(坟墓) for his wife. It was built in 22 years (1631 to 1653) by 20,000 workmen. The building is made of white marble(大理石) . A beautiful garden surrounds(环绕) the Taj Mahal. In front of the main entrance to the building there is Taj Mahal in the reflection from the water. It is located in Lhasa, Tibet, was the chief residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to Dharamsala after a failed uprising in 1959. In 641, Songtsan Gambo, ruler of the Tubo Kingdom, had the Potala Palace built for Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty, whom he was soon to marry. The Potala Palace Potala Palace is located on “Red Hill” in Lhasa. It was originally built in the 640’s, during the reign of King Songtsan Gampo. The 13-story palace stands 117 meters high and covers an area of 130,000 square meters. It is divided into two sections, the Red Palace and the White Palace. It was used as the residence of the Dalai Lamas since the 7th century, as well as the religious and political centre of old Tibet.DiscussionAs you know people from ancient civilizations built many magnificent structures.
