Dad’s farm(2018
Nothing could stop Dad. After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey.
And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin's chicken house in exchange for manure (肥料). The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes (甜瓜) filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter.
Waste of produce
Similar to humans, produce (农产品) comes in different shapes and sizes. Yet, chances are that you have probably never met an ugly-looking carrot or an apple at your local stores or farmers’markets. That’s because any fruit or vegetable that looks different from what is considered “normal” will be thrown away.
Experts say that six billion pounds or about twenty percent of all produce grown in the US ends up either in landfills (垃圾填埋地) or as animal feed every year. Now Ben Chesler, Ben Simon and Ron Clark want to change that with their “Imperfect”. The Oakland-based company plans to buy the so-called ugly produce from farmers and sell it through a supermarket chain they recently signed a deal with.
Chesler and Simon believe that once people realize that “ugly” fruit and vegetables taste as good as the “beautiful” produce supermarkets sell, they will accept them. The company, which is working with farmers in California, plans to start selling the produce to people in Oakland and Berkeley. If all goes well, Imperfect will extend (扩大) the service to other California cities and then hopefully, to other states as well.
In addition to preventing waste, Imperfect’s idea will also cause additional income for farmers who are sometimes forced to throw away as much as 50% of their produce just because it doesn’t look “right”. Besides, the produce will cost as 30% to 50% less than those sold in supermarkets.
And if that’s not enough to convince you that “ugly” produce may be worth a try, how about this? It will help the environment, too. That’s because bad produce gives off harmful gas into the atmosphere. What’s more, kids may eat more fruit and vegetables if they look “different” from the boring ones they meet every day.
American beekeeping operations have been hit hard by what scientists call colony collapse disorder. Almost half of their worker bees have disappeared during the past season. C.C.D. has also been reported in Israel, Europe and South America. Bees fly away from the hive and never return. Sometimes they are found dead; other times they are never found. Many crops and trees depend on pollination (授粉) by bees to help them grow. A new report says a virus may be at least partly responsible for the disorder in honey bee colonies in the United States. This virus is called Israeli acute paralysis virus. It was first identified in Israel in two thousand four. Ian Lipkin at Columbia University in New York and a team reported the new findings in Science magazine. Doctor Lipkin says the virus may not be the only cause. He says it may work with other causes to produce the collapse disorder. The team found the virus in colonies with the help of a map of honey bee genes that was published last year. They examined thirty colonies affected by the disorder. They found evidence of the virus in twenty-five of them, and in one healthy colony. The next step is further testing of healthy hives. The researchers suggested that the United States may have imported the disorder in bees from Australia. They say the bees may carry the virus but not be affected. The idea is that unlike many American bees, the ability of Australian bees to fight disease has not been hurt by the varroa mite This insect attacks honey bees, which could make the disorder more likely to affect a hive. Australian bee producers reject these suspicions. And some researchers suspect that bee production in the United States is down mainly because of the weather. Honey bees gather nectar (花蜜) from flowers and trees. The sweet liquid gives them food and material to make honey. But cold weather this spring in the Midwest reduced the flow of nectar in many flowers. Many bees may have starved. Dry conditions in areas of the country could also be playing a part. Wayne Esaias is a NASA space agency scientist who keeps bees in his free time. He lives in central Maryland, where he has found that flowers are blooming a month earlier than they did in nineteen seventy. Wayne Esaias is organizing a group of beekeepers to document nectar flow around the country.

It may not be crazy. We already have heart transplants(移植),and artificial(人造的;假的) arms, legs and hands. We have artificial muscles(肌肉) that use air to move.We have computers which we put inside people to help make their bodies work.We can make artificial ears, artificial eyes like small television cameras, and artificial throats, which make voices like the real thing.Mr. White,a professor in a university in the United States says it will not be long before we have head transplants.
“We can do this with the technology(技术) we have now. There is only one big problem—when we cut off the old head, the nerves(神经) which join the rest of the body to the head is also cut and broken. The new head could hear and see,but body could not move. But in the future, scientists will be able to make the head grow its own nerves and join itself to the nerves in the body, like a plant grows into the soil.”
When will all this happen? In a few hundred years perhaps, says Professor White, who also says that his ideas are as crazy as the ideas of the man who said a hundred years ago that it was possible to walk on the moon.

Most people around the world are“right—handed”.This also seems to be true in history. In 1799,scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1500 B.C.to the 1950s.Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history.Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left.handed.
Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the left hand is used to find things or hold things. The fight hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left side of the brain, which controls the fight hand.is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed,and studies have found that left—handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.No one really knows what makes a person become fight—handed instead of left-handed.Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone,so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed.
One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for fight-handedness,he/she may become either fight-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.Though fight-handedness is more common than left-handedness,people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual.A long time ago,left-handed children were made to use their fight hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.

It’s perfectly normal for young children to suddenly decide they hate everything—even foods they loved yesterday. It’s also common for them to go on what expels call food jags—that is,they want to eat the same few foods over and over again at every meal, while turning up their noses at anything new.“It’s a fear of new things,”says Nancy Hudson,a researcher in University of California,Berkeley.“We think it’s one of those quirks(怪癖) that humans probably developed to protect themselves as mankind came into this world. You don’t try new things because you don’t know if they’re safe.”Children like familiar things.whether they’re their beds or their afternoon tea,so most kids won’t try new foods until they’ve been shown to them many times.
Picky(挑剔的) eating can also be a child’s way of showing his independence. This is why forcing a child to eat often makes things worse. Finally,it may seem like your child cannot sit still long enough to eat very much at one sitting because of his short attention. But children are generally good at getting what they need, even if it doesn’t seem like much to you.In any case.you can try to keep your child at the table longer by making mealtime as calm and regular as possible, without too many distractions(分心的事物) like toys,TV,or pets.
52.How many reasons does the writer mention in this passage to explain why children are mostly picky eaters?
A.Three. B.Two. C.Four. D.One.
53.What does the phrase“turning up their noses” underlined in Paragraph 1 mean?

54.Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Only children like things which they are familiar with.
B.Toys are not good、for children.
C.It seems that children like eating more when they have something they like in their hands.
D.Make it a rule to let your child eat at the table when mealtime comes.
55.According to the writer, one of the ways to have children eat new foods is ________.
A.telling them stories while they’re eating
B.not giving them any food until they’re very hungry
C.letting them become familiar with the new foods
D.explaining to them how useful the new foods are

To the Editor:
I have been reading your newspaper, the Hometown Gazette, for the past two years, ever since I moved to Smithville. We moved here from New York City,so I am accustomed to reading excellent newspapers such as The New York Times. In fact,we still have the Times delivered on Sundays. The entire family enjoys reading the recipes in the paper,as well as the Styles section.
The Times is great, but _______.I’ve never read an article that doesn’t contain at least three or four spelling or grammatical errors. For instance,in last week’s issue, you misspelled the word“secretary”,used a singular verb with a plural noun.and used“it’s”as a possessive. And that was just in the lead story! In ease you never went to elementary school.“it’s”means“it is”.It’s not a possessive adjective!
It’s a pity that this tiny little hick(土气的) town has only one newspaper, because I’d like to have an alternative to the rag you publish.I find it hard to believe your news stories. If you can’t spell correctly, how can you get your facts right?

Top Four Reasons Why You Should Start Gardening
For me, gardening is the coolest hobby. I mean really, what other hobby can you devote a little money to that gives you so much in return? 61 All you need is a little dirt, a few packets of seeds and you’re good to go. Here are my top four reasons why I think gardening rocks!
__ 62
I used to spend lots of money on fresh fruits and vegetables before I got into gardening. Now I happily pick up a $1 packet of seeds knowing I can get an entire summer’s worth of a particular type of vegetable from a packet of very tiny seeds.
Perennial Flowers (宿根花卉) Are an Cheap Form of Beautifying Gardens
63 But these days you’ll find me planting perennial flowers like daisies (雏菊) and lavender (薰衣草) each summer because I know that a packet of seeds can go a long way. I really mean it. 64
Gardening Is a Hobby the Children Can Enjoy
Getting kids to try new fruits and vegetables can be a challenge sometimes, but a funny thing happens when kids learn to grow their own food. They become adventurous eaters! 65
Sharing Is Caring
If you grow more fruits and vegetables than you can eat, donate them to a local food bank or a soup kitchen or give extra produce away to friends and neighbors.
So whether you like to grow your own vegetables or grow flowers for your kitchen table, gardening is just plain awesome.
A. When I first started gardening, I only planted fruits and vegetables.
B. Gardening Can Help You Cut Your Grocery Bill.
C. Gardening Is Cheaper Than Your Grocery Bill.
D. Suddenly trying new foods, such as purple beans, is cool and exciting for them.
E. A few packets of seeds and a truckload of dirt can go a long way.
F. There are no membership fees to pay, no special clothes to buy.
G. After all, why would you pay ten dollars for one plant, when you can grow twenty for a two dollar packet of seeds?

在过去的10年里可以说during the past decade,也可以说in the past decade。
thanks to相当于because of,表示原因。
refer to与look up都有“参照;查询”的意思。
be rich in是固定搭配,Our country为单数形式,所以be动词也要用单数形式。
the first,the last等后接动词时用不定式的形式,并形成主谓关系。
I’d rather not是I’d rather not open the window的省略句,意思是“我不愿开窗”。I’d rather后不跟you not结构,B项语法不正确。
have difficulty/fun/trouble/a hard time...(in) doing sth.
devote...to + n. / v.

Could you possibly give us a room here?
18.B 联系后文的finding people who are both friendly and helpful可以得此答案。
19.A All of our rooms are taken是服务员给他们的解释。
其他选项中,make up组成,构成;pick up捡起,学会;bring in引进。
其他选项中,look up to抬头看,walk up to走向,point out指出。

Her daughter says that she needs a rest,以及接下来讲到的“她的母亲老是跟着她”得出此答案。 I need a rest and she does, too.
Husbands, wives or grown children can work or have a rest. Most important of all, families are able to stay together.

We already have heart transplants(移植),and artificial(人造的;假的) arms,legs and hands.We have artificial muscles(肌肉) that use air to move ....
Mr. White。a professor in a university in the United States says it will not be long before we have head transplants.
There is only one big problem—when we cut off the old head, the nerves(神经) which join the rest of the body to the head is also cut and broken.

B项干扰性最大,全文讲述了科学家对right·handed people与left-handed people的研究,而并非只讲left—handed people。

In any case, you can try to keep your child at the table longer by making mealtime as calm and regular as possible得此答案。
