The inventor of basketball was Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian who, during most of his career, worked as a physical and athletic trainer.
The idea came to him when he was working for the Young Men’s Christian Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dr. Naismith never allowed laziness and physical inactivity (休止状态) in his students, but during the winters, when outdoor activities were challenging, he wanted to give his students something to do besides the usual boring fitness routines.
It would have to be an indoor game, but what kind? Hockey, football, and baseball were all in existence, but he thought it necessary to invent some new game that would be superb physical exercise, and demand very good stamina (精力). He worked hard to modify (修改)games such as football and hockey, and to invent something that would be played easily in the comfort of a large hall.
One of the things he decided that he needed was a ball that could be easily picked up and thrown. Its dimensions (表面积) should be neither too great nor too small. Because he was in search of a new game, he dropped the idea of carrying the ball toward a target, and decided that the players couldn’t run with the ball, and would have to pass it instead. The target into which the ball was to be put was placed at some height to test the deftness (灵巧) of the players’hands, and their strength.
For every successful shot, a team was awarded a point. Initially peach baskets were used instead of the present rope baskets that let the balls pass through. Being a very modest person, Dr. Naismith refused to let the game be named "Naismithball", and chose the name "basketball" instead. And under that name, of course, it has become famous.
36. Why did Dr. Naismith want to invent a new game? A. Outdoor activities were challenging in winter.

If you are a student who wants to get high grades while spending less time working for them, then the book, How to Become a Straight-AStudent, is one you should read. You definitely do have to work hard, but the book tells you where and how to spend your energy working to get those high grades, while also having time left over for sleep and entertainment. ???? The book, written by Cal Newport, is obviously specifically written for high school students. It is divided into three parts. The first part addresses "Study Basics", in which Newport outlines the benefits and methods of time management and study tips. In the second part about "Quizzes and Exams", he outlines how to take notes and then use them well for studying. He also provides hints for taking tests and exams. The third part is about case studies of his recommendations in action, in which you can read about the learning experiences of some top students. ???? Most of the information that he provides in the book is based on the experience of real students who got excellent grades in high school. According to Newport, these A-level students also had plenty of time for other activities such as partying, sleeping and other interests, because they had learned to study more efficiently than other students who spent most of their time studying hard in an attempt to get good grades. ???? I really like the layout (编排). The three parts of the book cover the areas that students need to be most concerned with. I feel that the book would be very helpful to a large number of students. ???? This winter in Iceland has been one of the worst ever, but one animal that was born there, and just returned, has been enjoying it. Keiko is a killer whale who is now living in a hidden bay. ???? In 1979, when Keiko was one or two, he was captured. In 1982 he was moved to an amusement park in Ontario, Canada, and three years later another park took him to Mexico City. There, the 6.4-meter whale lived in a small pen(圈)in water that was too warm. In 1993 the movie FreeWillymade people aware of his situation, and in 1996 the Free Willy Keiko Foundation moved him to a pool in an aquarium(水族馆) in Newport, Oregon. ???? The foundation spent over $12 million returning Keiko to Iceland, his home. Late last year the 4,000-pound whale was flown on a C-17 transport plane to a pen near the Wesman Islands. ???? Critics thought Keiko would suffer in the cold water. Instead, he loves it, and has become more active. He likes to jump out of the water to get sprayed by the salt spray. ???? Since his return, he has been acting more like a wild whale. He dives more often and eats more live fish. ???? Keiko still isn’t ready to go out alone into the open sea. Trainers hope to put him in a larger bay, and to train him to follow a boat. They don’t know what Keiko will do when he meets other sea animals. So far the only animals who had come near Keiko left when they saw him. ???? They would like to let Keiko free this summer. No one knows if he will be ready. Old age may not sound exciting. But a recent study led by Arthur Stone of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York offers good news for older people, and for people worried about getting older. Researchers have found that people become happier, and experience fewer worries, after the age of fifty. In fact, they say, by the age of eighty-five most people are happier than when they were eighteen. ???? In the survey, more than three hundred and forty thousand adults between the age of eighteen and eighty-five in the United States were asked about emotions like happiness, sadness, and worry, as well as mental and emotional stress. The results show that levels of stress are highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five, and descend sharply after people reach their fifties, while happiness is highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. Those in their seventies and eighties are least likely to report negative emotions. The study also shows that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older, but that women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men. ???? Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have, and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences. ???? Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be related to how people see the changes of the world. The researchers also considered the possession of young children, unemployment, and being single, but found that these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

阅读下面短文并回答问题(请注意问题后的词数要求)。
[1] I’ve spent many years teaching young people basketball and know how valuable basketball dribbling(运球) skills are. If you’ve developed good ball handling skills, you can create a lot of offense(进攻)not only for yourself but also for your teammates. This article discusses some keys to developing good ball handling skills. ???? [2] It is quite natural for people to ______________ while practising dribbling. However, this is a bad habit to learn and can be very hard to break. Learn to keep your head up constantly. If you have to watch the basketball while dribbling, you won’t know what your teammates or the defenders are doing. Learn to dribble without actually having to look down while doing so. If you need help to keep your head up, you can wear special training glasses that block the view downward and force you to keep your head up. ???? [3] Keep your knees bent, weight on your toes and lower your upper body. The longer the ball is out of your hand before it returns, the more likely you will have a turnover(失球). Staying low shortens the dribble, provides for more control and reduces the opportunity for turnovers. ???? [4] Dribble to the side of your body. Don’t dribble directly in front of yourself. Of course, there are exceptions like during a crossover (交叉)move but in general this is not a good idea. Doing so offers the defender some chances to get the ball from you. And a pair of quick hands may pick your pocket before you know it. When under defensive pressure, turn your body so that it is between the ball and the defender. This is the classic body-body-ball position which makes the defender go through you to get the ball.
