For most students in universities, 20, 000 yuan is a big sum. But Xiao Wang paid the money soon after she learned that she could change to the popular Economics Department. By paying 20,000 yuan with the help of her parents, Xiao Wang can study the economics major she prefers. “It is difficult for graduates in chemistry to find a good job in recent years.” she said. Xiao Wang is only one of the many freshmen that pay to change to popular majors. Many universities throughout China offer similar services. The charges for changing majors are from 5,000 yuan to 80,000 yuan, according to a recent report on the Yangzi Evening News. The fee(费用) is decided by university authorities based on the popularity of each major, the report said. The most popular majors include computer science, law, finance(金融), information engineering and foreign languages. A saying popular among students may explain the phenomenon(现象). Studying a good major is much better than studying in a famous university. Some educators warn(警告)students against rushing blindly to today’s popular majors. They may not be popular years later, the China Youth Daily said. But it seems that many students are career—oriented(以职业为宗旨), instead of being interest—based. Freshmen are allowed to change to other departments. according to rules of the Ministry of Education. But there are no official rules on the charges. In spite of(尽管) the high charges, demands to change majors are still increasing. The paper said about 100 students in the English language department of a school in Harbin changed from other departments. The department planned to admit only 50 freshmen this year. These charges have become a big income for some universities, the paper said. It is expected a normal school in Harbin will get an income of 30 million yuan this year. 1. Xiao Wang would rather pay 20,000 yuan to change to the Economics Department because ___________. A. her parents have persuaded her to do so B. she prefers to study the major C. she can have a promising(有前途的)future D. changing to another major is very popular in university 2. The following are the most popular majors in China today except _________. A. law B. computer C. English D. chemistry 3. The fees that freshmen hand in to change to a new major are decided by _________. A. headmasters B. the Ministry of Education C. university authorities D. the China Youth Daily 4. The writer wrote the passage to __________. Through a series of experiments an American scientist has gained an understanding of the social structure of the most complex of ant societies. The ants examined are the only creatures other than man to have given up hunting and collecting for a completely agricultural way of life. In their underground nests they planted gardens on soils made from finely cut leaves. This is a complex operation requiring considerable division of labor. The workers of this type of ant can be divided into four groups according to size. Each of the groups performs a particular set of jobs. The making and care of the gardens and the nursing of the young ants are done by the smallest workers. Slightly larger workers are responsible for cutting leaves to make them suitable for use in the gardens and for cleaning the nest. A third group of still larger ants do the construction work and collect fresh leaves from outside the nest. The largest are the soldier ants, responsible for defending the nest. To find out how good the various size — groups are at different tasks, the scientist measured the amount of work done by the ants against the amount of energy they used. He examined first the gathering and carrying of leaves. He selected one of the size groups, and then measured how efficiently these ants could find leaves and run back to the nest. Then he repeated the experiment for each of the other size groups. In this way he could see whether any group could do the job more efficiently than the group normally undertaking it. The intermediate-sized (中等) ants that normally perform this task proved to be the most efficient for their energy costs, but when the scientist examined the whole set of jobs performed by each group of ants, it appeared that some sizes of worker ants were not suited to the particular jobs they performed. 10.?According to the passage, the ants _______ ?A.?grow something in their nests? B. go hunting for a living ? C.?cut leaves to make a fire? D. do each of the jobs all together

D. dangerous work ? 12.?The underlined word "good" probably means________. A.?co-operating B. efficient ? C. hardworking D. responsible ?13.?The experiments made by the scientist was based on _______. ?? A.?special methods? B. scientific theories ? ? C.?personal interests? D. systematic observations ???? If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise—and as a result, we are not aging unnecessarily soon. Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively, early age, and how the process of aging could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes(容量)of a thousand people of different ages and jobs. Computer technology enabled the researchers to get right measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intellect and emotion, and determine the human character. Contraction (收缩) of the front and side parts as cells died off was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not clear in some sixty and seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests ‘that there is a simple remedy(补救)to the contraction normally? associated with age—using the head. The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking(萎缩) brains as farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants. Matsuzawa’ s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need. “The best way to keep good blood circulation is through using the brain,” he says “Think hard and engage in conversation. Don’ t rely on pocket calculators.” ?14.?The team of doctors wanted to find out?_______. A.?why certain people age sooner than others ?? B.?how to make people live much longer ?? C.?the size of certain people’s brains ??D.?the people with more intelligent ?15.?On?what are their research findings based? ? A.?A survey of farmers in northern Japan. ?? B.?Tests performed on a thousand old people. C.?The study of brain volumes of different people.
D.?The latest development of computer technology.
16.?"Matsuzawa thinks that _____. A.?our brains shrink as we grow older B.?the front section of the brain does not shrink C.?sixty-year-old people have better brains than thirty-year-olds D.?the contraction of brains is connected with brain exercise
17.?According to the passage, which people seem to age slower than the others? ? A.?Farmers.? B. Lawyers.? C. Government workers. D. Shop assistants.

第四节One possible version:
We are leaving school and we decide to give a gift to Mr. Li who has taught us for three years. Two suggestions have been provided by our classmates. One is that we may give him an album with photos of all the students in our class. The other suggestion is that a tape in which our best wishes are recorded should be given to him.
In my opinion, we had better buy a album for Mr. Li. First, an album is easier to be kept than a tape. A tape may be easily destroyed a few years later and does not work. Second, I think, the photos in the album can easily remind Mr. Li of his lovely students and the good days when he got together with us. Third, voice may be changed a lot after many years as to us young students, while faces do not have such great changes. In a word, I suggest .we take photos in time and present them in the album to Mr. Li.
