Thanksgiving
The very first Thanksgiving celebration in North America took place in Canada when Martin Frobisher, an explorer from England, arrived in Newfoundland in 1578; he wanted to give thanks for his safe arrival to the new world, and for the bountiful harvest that he and his fellow explorers enjoyed there. This means that the first Thanksgiving in Canada was celebrated 43 years before the pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts!
In 1957, after the end of the World Wars, the Canadian Parliament announced that Thanksgiving would be celebrated on the second Monday in October. This was to prevent Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day from falling in the same week.
The “first Thanksgiving” in the United States was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in 1621. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating “thanksgivings”—days of prayer thanking God for blessings, such as the end of a drought, or military victory. The date that Americans celebrated their Thanksgiving varied from state to state until President Lincoln announced the date to be the final Thursday in the month of November; he had been attempting to create a sense of American unity between the Northern and Southern states.
One of the main reasons that Canada celebrates Thanksgiving earlier than the United States is that it’s geographically further north, so their harvest season arrives earlier. And since Canadian Thanksgiving is more about harvest than the arrival of pilgrims, it makes sense to celebrate in the month of October!

Hi, guys. I visited my uncle in the United Kingdom this summer vacation. Now let me show you around this country. Come with me.
UK is in the northwest of Europe and it is an island country. In old times people had to go there by ship because the country is sounded by water, but now you can go there by plane.
There are 4 parts in the UK: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. My uncle lives in London. Can you guess which part I am going to? You are right! I am going to England. London is the capital city of England and as well the capital of the UK. It is also the biggest city in the UK.
I stayed in London for a couple of days, so let me tell you about some fun places to go. Firstly, you can visit the British Museum there. It is a must-see place in London. It has a lot of artworks from around the world. You can find artworks from China, Egypt, Greece, India and so on. Check on-line to find out how England got these arts, you will know more about the world history.
Not interested in this? You can take photos of Big Ben or go to Buckingham Palace. Big Ben is a very large clock in the middle of London. Buckingham Palace is the home of the Queen. If you see a flag raising up high on the palace, you will know that the Queen is at home.
How to travel around the City? Buses and Subways are good choices. There is a kind of interesting red bus in London which has two decks. You can take it for sightseeing. Subway will give you a faster ride. The first subway named Metropolitan Railway was opened for traffic in 1863 in London. But it is interesting that you will not see the word- “subway” on the streets in London, instead you will read “underground”.
Another thing that is worth riding on is the London eye. It is not a bus or a train, it is a big ferris wheel, riding on it you can see the whole city.
Feel tired after a long run around the city? Try fish and chips and the afternoon tea. They are traditional food and drink in the UK.
Above all, you know what the best thing is for me to travel in London? I practiced English with English people. I made a lot of mistakes but it’s really fun.
Of course, there are other famous cities in the UK too, such as Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Portsmouth and Cambridge. They are famous for different things. I will visit them next summer vacation.
