Once upon a time, all the animals were called to a meeting. As they arrived at the public square early in the morning, one of them, the chicken, was seen by her neighbors going in the opposite direction. “Why are you going away from the square? Didn’t you receive the invitation?” they asked.
“Yes, I did,” said the chicken, “and I definitely would come to the meeting if only a certain personal matter hadn't suddenly come up. I really must go home and see about it. I'm very sorry, but I trust you will make my sincere apologies to the meeting. Tell everyone that although I won't be there in body, I'll certainly be there in spirit! Whatever you decide, you can count on my complete support.”
The question that the animals were due to debate was what to do with the problem of man's frequent sacrifice of animals to his Gods. After a turbulent but surprisingly short debate, they decided that they would offer man just one regular sacrificial animal if he would leave the rest of them in peace.
