be/get bored 感到厌烦的。
7.in 表达“用……方式去做某事”时要用介词 in,即: in a/an...way。
10.making look forward to doing sth.

My husband and I wanted desperately the instant transformation from typical consumers to eco-conscious people. We switched our light bulbs to CFL(compact fluorescent light)bulbs to save energy. We went about the house turning off lights and appliances that weren’t in use. But the rate of global warming went beyond our snail’s pace to greenhood. So I pushed it forward.
I decided to be a vegetarian first of all. Vegans refuse any animal flesh or commercial goods made from any animal byproducts such as milk or fats. All the family applauded this decision except for my husband. Some kind of animal needed to sacrifice its dear life for his meal or it wasn’t dinner. I cooked up a storm, struggling to prepare nutritious meals with not-so-obvious vegan dishes like bean burritos and high-fiber vegetable stir-fry. It took a few days before he realized that he hadn’t been eating any meat.
“I feel like eating beef,”he announced. So that nigh, I took full advantage of a zucchini, cut it into chunky(粗大的) pieces and cooked them. Then I covered them with spices. My beef-starved husband had some and a curious look crossed his face.
“Where’s the beef?”
“Living peacefully somewhere on an open plain where it belongs.”
“I knew it,”he murmured.“You’ve surely made great contributions to the boom in cattle.”His tastes were developed completely around every kind of animal:cattle, pigs, fish, lamb, chickens and ducks. Changing him was like feeding grass to a lion.
I’m all for preserving our planet, but what good would it do to save the earth for tomorrow’s generation if today’s died of starvation? The next day, we went out for burgers. I was very careful to place the paper bag into our recycling bin.
4.What does the author want to describe by saying “our snail’s pace”in Para 1?
A.How careful we are to protect the earth.
B.How fast the pollution is spreading.
C.What little we do to prevent global warming.
D.How green our life should become.
5.What do we know about the author’s husband from Paragraph 2?
A.He was a meat lover.
B.He disliked animals.
C.He supported the meat-free diet.
D.He wasn’t good at cooking.
6.What is “zucchini”most probably mentioned in Para 3?
A.A kind of beef. B.A kind of vegetable.
C.A kind of fish. D.A cooking method.
7.What do we know about the author in the end?
A.She managed to change his husband’s tastes.
B.She felt disappointed with her husband.
C.She advocated raising more cattle.
D.She still tried to be an eco-conscious person.

When I was in the fourth grade, I worked part-time as a paper boy. Mrs. Stanley was one of my customers. She’d watch me coming down her street, and by the time I’d biked up to her doorstep, there would be a cold drink waiting. I’d sit and drink while she talked.
Mrs. Stanley talked mostly about her dead husband. “Mr. Stanley and I went shopping this morning,” she’d say. The first time she said that, soda (汽水) went up my nose.
I told my father how Mrs. Stanley talked as if Mr. Stanley were still alive. Dad said she was probably lonely, and that I ought to sit and listen and nod my head and smile, and maybe she’d work it out of her system. So that’s what I did, and it turned out Dad was right. After a while she seemed content to leave her husband over at the cemetery (墓地).?
I finally quit delivering newspapers and didn’t see Mrs. Stanley for several years. Then we crossed paths at a church fund-raiser(募捐活动). She was spooning mashed potatoes and looking happy. Four years before, she’d offer her paper boy a drink to have someone to talk with. Now she had friends. Her husband was gone, but life went on.
I am living in the city now, and my paper boy is a lady named Edna with three kids. She asks me how I’m doing. When I don’t say “fine”, she sticks around to hear my problems. She’s lived in the city for most of her life, but she knows about community. Community isn’t so much a place as it is a state of mind. You find it whenever people ask you how you’re doing because they care, and not because they’re getting paid to do so. Sometimes it’s good to just smile, nod your head and listen.
8.Why did soda go up the author’s nose one time?
A.Because he was talking fast.
B.Because he was absent-minded.
C.Because he was in a hurry.
D.Because he was shocked.
9.Why did the author sit and listen to Mrs. Stanley according to Paragraph 3?
A.Because he took the chance to rest.
B.Because he wanted to be helpful.
C.Because he enjoyed the drink.
D.Because he tried to please his dad.
10.Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “work it out of her system”?
A.Speak out about her past.
B.Move out of the neighborhood.
C.Turn to her old friends.
D.Recover from her sadness.
11.What does the author think people should do in a community?
A.Care about one another.
B.Depend on each other.
C.Pay for others’ help.
D.Open up to others.
Mrs. Stanley talked mostly about her dead husband. “Mr. Stanley and I went shopping this morning,” she’d say. Mrs. Stanley talked as if Mr. Stanley were still alive可知Stanley夫人说她已去世的丈夫今天上午和她去购物了,说得好像他还活着一样。
Dad said she was probably lonely, and that I ought to sit and listen and nod my head and smile和So that’s what I did, and it turned out Dad was right.
Community isn’t so much a place as it is a state of mind. You find it whenever people ask you how you’re doing because they care, and not because they’re getting paid to do so. Sometimes it’s good to just smile, nod your head and listen.

Mrs Smith trembled with excitement when she was told her fortunes. “Somebody is coming home to you,” Mrs Gray said slowly. “He’s carrying a rifle on his back and he’s almost there.”
Mrs Smith felt as if she could hardly breathe. “And there he is!” Mrs Gray cried, pointing to the road. They all rushed to the door to look.
A man in a blue coat, with a gun on his back, was walking down the road toward the Smith farm. His face was hidden by a large pack on his back.
Laughing and crying, Mrs Smith grabbed her hat and her children and ran out of Mrs Gray’s house. She hurried down the road after him, calling his name and pulling her children along with her. But the soldier was too far away for her voice to reach him.
When she got back to their farm, she saw the man standing by the fence. He was looking at the little house and the field of yellow wheat. The sun was almost touching the hills in the west. The cowbells rang softly as the animals moved toward the barn(畜棚).
“How peaceful it all is,” Private Smith thought. “How far away from the battles, the hospitals, the wounded and the dead. My little farm in Wisconsin. How could I have left it for those years of killing and suffering?”
Trembling and weak with emotion, Mrs Smith hurried up to her husband. Her feet made no sound on the grass, but he turned suddenly to face her. For the rest of his life, he would never forget her face at the moment.?
“Emma!” he cried.
The children stood back watching their mother kissing this strange man. He saw them, and kneeling down, he pulled from his pack three huge red apples. In a moment, all three children were in their father’s arms. Together, the family entered the little unpainted farmhouse.
Later that evening, after supper, Private Smith and his wife went outside. The moon was bright, above the eastern hills. Sweet, peaceful stars filled the sky as the night birds sang softly, and tiny insects buzzed in the soft air.
His farm needed work. His children needed clothing. He was no longer young and strong. But he began to plan for the next year. With the same courage he had faced the war, Private Smith faced his difficult future.
12.Why could Mrs Smith hardly breathe when told her fortunes?
A.She had a sudden heart attack and almost lost consciousness.
B.She was shocked by the scene of a man with a rifle on his back.
C.She was overjoyed on hearing the return of her husband.
D.She ran out of the house too fast to catch her breath.
13.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 7 suggest?
A.The moment expected for years would be a life-long memory.
B.He had almost forgotten her face after those years’ suffering.
C.He was shocked by the excitement written on her face.
D.He was afraid to be apart from her again.
14.What’s Private Smith’s attitude towards the future life?
A.Skeptical. B.Confused.
C.Hopeful. D.Concerned.
15.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.An Unexpected Visitor
B.Husband and Wife
C.The Return of a Private
D.The Smiths
