In 1967,a 20-year-old student at Syracuse University became the first woman to officially participate in the Boston Marathon.Fifty years later,Kathrine Switzer crossed the finish line of the Boston Marathon wearing the same number.
Switzer’s marathon in 1967 became historic because she was the first woman to complete the all-male race as an official participant. She registered as “K.V.Switzer” to hide her sex.A few miles into the race,an official tried to remove Switzer from the race.“Naturally I turned my head around quickly and looked square into the most unpleasant face I’d ever seen.A huge man with bared teeth was set to pounce(猛扑),and before I could react he grabbed my shoulder, screaming,‘Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers!’”she wrote in her memoir (回忆录).Switzer finished the race in four hours and 20 minutes, but would later be disqualified and officially forced to leave from the Amateur Athletic Union.
Plenty has changed in running since 1967,thanks to Switzer’s efforts.Since 1972,women are welcome in the Boston Marathon and other major races. On Monday, the 70-year-old finished the Boston Marathon only a little slower,in 4∶44∶31.Her number was retired after the race—just the second number that the marathon has retired. Before her start, she was given the honor of firing the gun for the women’s top runners.
“In 1967,few would have believed that marathon running would someday attract millions of women, become an appealing event in the Olympics and on the streets of major cities, help transform views of women’s physical ability and help redefine their economic roles in traditional cultures,” Switzer wrote.“We’ve come a light year but we still have a long way to go.”
1.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.Switzer’s Boston Marathon results.
B.Switzer’s being removed from the race.
C.Switzer’s hiding her sex in registration.
D.Switzer’s experience in the Boston Marathon.
2.Why was Switzer treated that way by the Amateur Athletic Union?
A.She lacked proper training in marathon race.
B.They found her quarrelling with the official.
C.She had little experience in the long race.
D.They had discrimination against women.
3.Why was Switzer’s number retired after the race?
A.She performed poorly in the race.
B.Nobody wanted to use the number any more.
C.She was the second retired athlete in marathon.
D.They honored her contributions to women marathon.
4.What’s Switzer’s attitude towards women marathon?
A.Optimistic. B.Disappointed. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.
Switzer’s marathon in 1967 became historic because she was the first woman to complete the all-male race as an official participant.
Plenty has changed in running since 1967,thanks to Switzer’s efforts.Since 1972,women are welcome in the Boston Marathon and other major races.
根据最后一段,尤其最后一个句子 “We’ve come a light year but we still have a long way to go.” 故选A项。
Why you shouldn’t punish your kids for lying
Getting your children to stop lying is challenging. There are many influences (TV, movies, video games and some great books) in which lies are common.Children see parents lie to others, if only to be polite. Most parents add to that with tales about the lives and activities of Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, or to lessen fears.1. ?
The most common reactions to children who lie are explaining why it is wrong and punishment.2. Here are three better tools supported by research to use instead.?
PRAISE: You could ask your child to say something that happened at school that is true. When your child obeys, praise him enthusiastically.Be specific:3. and give your child a hug or a high five.Aim for one or two interactions (互动) like this a day.If you happen to “catch” your child in a lie, say something like, “That is not true and could get you in trouble outside of the home.”?
MODEL: Explicitly tell the truth. This could be about something that happened when you were a child or something that happened during the day.It need not be dramatic.Another option is to play a game at dinner. Each person tells one thing that was true that day.Again, give a little praise to the child who normally lies if he / she plays along.
DECREASE PUNISHMENT AND MORALIZING: They are unlikely to change behavior or develop the conduct you want.4. Rather, use very mild punishment (light scolding, short loss of privilege, a brief time-out).More severe punishments (shouting, taking away something for a week, hitting) are not more effective in actually changing the frequency of lying.?
5. Usually they can be dropped by then.It is unlikely that lying will be completely removed, but with the right encouragement, it can be dramatically lessened.?
A.It is not what that is, but about practice.
B.As ways of changing behavior, these are ineffective.
C.That does not mean ignoring, lying or letting it go.
D.“That was great! You told me what happened just like I asked.Wow!”
E.Try these procedures for two to three weeks and see where you are.
F.“You did a good job, but what you said was not what I’d like to know!”
G.Parents do this out of love, but for some children, lying can become a problem.
答案:1—5 GBDCE

Unit 15 Learning
A
Having a learning disability doesn’t mean you can’t learn, but you’ll need some help and need to work extra hard.If you have a learning disability such as dyslexia or dyscalculia, remember that you are not slow or stupid.
Learning disabilities can be genetic. That means they can be passed down in families through the genes, but kids today have an advantage over their parents. Learning experts now know a lot more about the brain and how learning works, and
it’s easier for kids to get the help they need.
Dyslexia is a learning disability that means a kid has a lot of trouble reading and writing. Kids who have trouble with math may have dyscalculia.Other kids may have language disorders, meaning they have trouble understanding language and understanding what they read.
It can be confusing, though. What qualifies as “trouble” enough to be diagnosed as a learning disability?Reading, doing math, and writing letters may be tough for lots of kids at first. But when those troubles don’t fade away and it’s really difficult to make any progress,it’s possible that the kid has a learning disability.
Finding out you have a learning disability can be upsetting. You might feel different from everyone else. But the truth is that learning disabilities are pretty common. And if your learning specialist or psychologist has figured out which one you’re facing, you’re on the right track. Now,you can start getting the help you need to do better in school.
But for this special help to really work, you’ll need to practice the new skills you’re learning. It may take a lot of efforts every day. That can be a challenge, but you can do it.Soon, you’ll enjoy the results of all your hard work: more fun and success at school.

Anton Oberlander is a persuasive speaker.Last year, when he and a group of friends were short of cash for a trip to Cornwall,he managed to talk Germany’s national rail operator into handing them some free tickets.Anton,it should be pointed out,is 14 years old.
His self-confidence is largely the product of a unique educational institution that has turned traditional teaching upside down.At Oberlander’s school, there are no grades until students turn 15,no timetables and no lecture-style instructions. The pupils decide which subjects they want to study for each lesson and when they want to take an exam.
The school’s syllabus (教学大纲) reads like any helicopter parent’s nightmare.Set subjects are limited to maths,German,English and social studies, supplemented by more courses such as “responsibility” and “challenge”.For challenge, students aged 12 to 14 are given $110 and sent on an adventure that they have to plan entirely by themselves.Last year, some went boating, while others worked on a farm.Anton went traveling along England’s south coast.
The philosophy behind these innovations is simple:as the requirements of the labor market are changing, and smartphones and the Internet are changing the ways in which young people process information, the school’s headteacher,Margret Rasfeld, argues that the most important skill a school can pass down to its students is the ability to motivate themselves.“Look at little kids—they are all full of self-confidence,”Rasfeld says.“Often, children can’t wait to start school.”
Students at her school are encouraged to think up other ways to prove their skills, such as coding a computer game instead of sitting a maths exam.Oberlander had never been away from home for three weeks until he started his challenge in Cornwall. He said he learned more English on his trip than he had in several years of learning the language at school.

故填a。
with the exception of...
故填to return。
