This is the first lesson in this module. The listening material is information about great books. It’s a good text to help the students improve their listening strategies, such as getting information from the listening material.

Read the dialogue and complete the passage with the correct form of the words in the box.

1. 在本模块中,work是名词,意为“著作;作品”,既可以指文字作品,也可以指音乐、美术等作品。如:He is making a study of William Faulkner’s works. 他在研究威廉·福克纳的作品。 其它用法回顾:
(1) 作名词,意为“工作;(要做的)事情”。如:
I can’t find work in this town. 在这个小镇上我找不到工作。
He did much work for class every day. 他每天为班级做好多事情。
(2) 作动词,意为“工作”。如:
Henry works in a bank. 享利在银行工作。
(3) 作动词,意为“运转;运行”。如:
My watch doesn’t work. 我的表不走了。
2. But I think I’d describe Confucius more as a teacher and thinker than a writer. 我更愿意把孔子描述为教师兼思想家,而非作家。
more…than… 在本文中指“与其说……不如说……”
常见的用法有:?
(1)?比……更(形容词和副词的比较级)。如:?She?is?more?beautiful?than?her?sister.?她比她妹妹更漂亮。?
?(2)与其说……不如说……。如:??He?was?more?hard-working?than?clever.?
与其说他聪明不如说他勤奋。
3. make sense 讲得通,有意义,合情合理的。

4. by the way 顺便说一下
Not bad. By the way, how is your mother? 还好。顺便问一下,你母亲怎么样?
5. He was important, but I suppose he isn’t as well-known as Confucius or Shakespeare.
(1) suppose 猜想,推测,相信,认为。
I suppose he’ll come back now.我想他这会儿该回来了。
(2) as…as…意为“和……一样”,表示同级的比较。
使用时要注意第一个as为副词,第二个as为连词。其基本结构为:as+ adj./ adv. +as。
This film is as interesting as that one.这部电影和那部电影一样有趣。
其否定式为not as/so +adj./ adv. +as。例如:
This dictionary is not as/so useful as you think.这本字典不如你想象的那样有用。
若有修饰成分,如twice, three times, half,a quarter等,则须置于第一个as之前。
Your bag is twice as expensive as mine.你的袋子比我的贵一倍。
(3) well-known出名的, 众所周知的 (+for/as); 熟知的
He is one of the world’s best-known opera singers. 他是世界上最有名的歌剧演员之一。
