This is the second lesson in this module. The reading material is information about great books. It’s a good text to help the students improve their reading strategies, such as getting information from the reading material.

1. The story is set in the town of St Petersburg, Missouri, in the southern US in the nineteenth century.

2. He runs away with his two friends, ... 他和两个朋友一起出走了，……
run away意为“跑开；离开；逃走”。
run away from...意为“从……离开 / 逃走”。
The dog took a piece of meat and ran away. 那条狗抢了一块肉就跑了。
They ran away from the terrible house quickly. 他们很快逃离了那座可怕的房子。
3. in the middle of = in the centre of 在…的中间
He was standing in the middle of the playground when I went past.当我走过时，他正站在操场的中间。
4. But when they hear that everyone thinks they are dead…当他们听到人们都认为他们死了时……
dead adj.死的, 枯的；无效的, 失效的
It is a dead volcano.那是座死火山。
Our radio receiver went dead.我们的无线电接收机失灵了。
5. Everyone is surprised to see him but they’re also pleased to see him alive.
所有人看见他都很惊讶, 但大家还是很高兴看到他还活着。
(1) be surprised to do sth. 惊奇地做某事
be surprised at sth. 对某事感到惊讶
to one’s surprise 使某人惊奇的是
(2) alive adj. 意为“活着的；在世的”，可用作表语和定语。alive 作定语时一般要后置。如：
The fish we caught is still alive. 我们捉的鱼还活着。(作表语)
He is the greatest poet alive. 他是还在世的最伟大的诗人。(作后置定语)

pay for…为…付出代价
He’ll have to pay for what he has done.他将为自己所做的一切付出代价。
