(Aside: There has been a big storm after midnight. Now Jim and Huck are on the deck. )
Jim: I hate the bad weather. It drives me crazy.
Huck: Me too. Oh, lighting!
Huck: Hey, what’s that? [Shouting to Jim]
Jim: A house? Why is there a house on the river?
Huck: Mmmmmm, anyway, we are sailing towards it! Oh, a steamboat it is! [Astonished]
Jim: And it looks as if it’ll go under soon! [Terrified]
Huck: Let’s go and have a look! [Excited]
Jim: No! I don’t want to board a sinking ship! [Worried]
Huck: Come on, friend! Maybe something useful is there! [Anxious]
Jim: Well… [Having no choice][ Annoyed ]Scene 2
(Aside: They paddle over and climb on to the steamboat, keeping as quiet as mice.)
Huck: Follow me, Jim!
Huck: [Astonished] Look, a light in that cabin!
Jim: Well...Just keep quiet. Let’s see what’s happening.
(Aside: They approach that cabin.)
Man 1: Oh, please boys, don’t kill me! I won’t tell anybody! [Pitiful]
Tall man: Shut up! You promised last time, and we’re going to kill you! [Threatening] (Aside: Jim panics and runs to the raft.)
Tall man: I’ve had enough of you! I’m going to shoot you now. [Cruel]
Short man: No, don’t do that. Let’s leave him here.
Tall man: Why? [Confused]
Short man: As you see, the steamboat will sink in a couple of hours and he’ll go down with it. [Sneeringly]
Tall man: Terrific! Ha-ha… [Excited]
Man 1: No! [Start crying]
(Aside: He sounds as if he’s going to die of fright! A way must be found to save him!)Scene 3
(Aside: Huck crawls along the deck and finds Jim.)
Huck: Jim, Jim!!! Those two men want to kill the poor man! We must find their boat and take it away. Then they’ll have to stay here. [Anxious]
Jim: [Terrified] I’m not staying here.
Huck: Help me one more time, Jim! It is better to save one life than build a seven-tiered pagoda. We must save his life!
Jim: Well… It’s the last time!
(Aside: They find the men’s boat tied to the other side of the steamboat. Quietly they climb in and paddle away.)
Short man: Hey! How dare you! Stop now! You dirty dog!
(Aside: They have been a safe distance away.)
Huck: Jim, I’m worried! I don’t want all three men to die! What will happen next? I wanted someone to find the men and get them off before the steamboat sank. The boat we were on was full of stolen things from the steamboat. Jim helped me move the things to our raft and we set off again. For a long time, we heard and saw nothing. At last, we went back to the steamboat. As we got closer, we heard nothing. Perhaps the three men were already dead. We had to start another adventurous trip. One possible versionLife is an adventure.
